The neurokinin-1 receptors (NK1Rs) in the forebrain medial septum (MS) region are localized exclusively on cholinergic neurons that partly project to the hippocampus and the cingulate cortex (Cg), regions implicated in nociception. In the present study, we explored the hypothesis that neurotransmission at septal NK1R and hippocampal cholinergic mechanisms mediate experimental neuropathic pain in the rodent chronic constriction injury model (CCI). The discharge of heavy metals into the environment has adversely affected the aquatic ecosystem due to their toxic and non-biodegradable nature. In this research, a three-dimensional graphene oxide/carboxymethylcellulose/aluminium sulphate (GOCAS) aerogel was synthesised and evaluated as a novel means for lead and zinc removal. The GOCAS aerogel was prepared via ice-templating of graphene oxide with carboxymethylcellulose and aluminium sulphate as the crosslinking and functionalisation additives.

Ghostbuster: A phase retrieval diffraction tomography algorithm for cryo-EM.

Ewald sphere curvature correction, which extends beyond the projection approximation, stretches the shallow depth of field in cryo-EM reconstructions of thick particles. Here we show that even for previously assumed thin particles, reconstruction artifacts which we refer to as ghosts can appear. By retrieving the lost phases of the electron exitwaves and accounting for the first Born approximation scattering within the particle, we show that these ghosts can be effectively eliminated.

Neurological diagnoses in hospitalized COVID-19 patients associated with adverse outcomes: A multinational cohort study.

Few studies examining the patient outcomes of concurrent neurological manifestations during acute COVID-19 leveraged multinational cohorts of adults and children or distinguished between central and peripheral nervous system (CNS vs. PNS) involvement. Using a federated multinational network in which local clinicians and informatics experts curated the electronic health records data, we evaluated the risk of prolonged hospitalization and mortality in hospitalized COVID-19 patients from 21 healthcare systems across 7 countries.

Late-onset cytomegalovirus cholangiopathy in a renal transplant patient: Case report and review of the literature.

This case report highlights the investigation and treatment of a 70-year-old male with cytomegalovirus (CMV) cholangiopathy. The patient underwent a kidney transplant in 2016 and presented 3 years later with the atypical presentation of left shoulder pain associated with dilated biliary tree and mild transaminitis. Initial endoscopic retrograde cholangiopancreatography (ERCP) showed diffuse stricture of the common bile duct, requiring stenting, and over the course of a year multiple stent changes were required to prevent cholestasis.

A multiscale generative model to understand disorder in domain boundaries.

A continuing challenge in atomic resolution microscopy is to identify significant structural motifs and their assembly rules in synthesized materials with limited observations. Here, we propose and validate a simple and effective hybrid generative model capable of predicting unseen domain boundaries in a potassium sodium niobate thin film from only a small number of observations, without expensive first-principles calculations or atomistic simulations of domain growth. Our results demonstrate that complicated domain boundary structures spanning 1 to 100 nanometers can arise from simple interpretable local rules played out probabilistically.

Cognition, Emotional States and Health-Related Quality of Life in Awake Craniotomy for Glioma: A Case Series.

Background: Awake craniotomy is an effective procedure for optimizing the onco-functional balance of resections in glioma. However, limited data exists on the cognition, emotional states, and health-related quality of life (HRQoL) of patients with glioma who undergo awake craniotomy. This study aims to describe 1) perioperative cognitive function and emotional states in a multilingual Asian population, 2) associations between perioperative cognitive function and follow-up HRQoL, and 3) associations between preoperative emotional states and follow-up HRQoL.

Supercooled water droplets are widely used to study supercooled water, ice nucleation and droplet freezing. Their freezing in the atmosphere affects the dynamics and climate feedback of clouds and can accelerate cloud freezing through secondary ice production. Droplet freezing occurs at several timescales and length scales and is sufficiently stochastic to make it unlikely that two frozen drops are identical.

Investigating the impact of metabolic syndrome traits on telomere length: a Mendelian randomization study.

Objective: Observational studies have reported bidirectional associations between metabolic syndrome (MetS) traits and short leukocyte telomere length (LTL), a TL marker in somatic tissues and a proposed risk factor for age-related degenerative diseases. However, in Mendelian randomization studies, longer LTL has been paradoxically associated with higher MetS risk. This study investigated the hypothesis that shorter LTL might be a consequence of metabolic dysfunction.

Three-dimensional heteroatom-doped graphene presents a state-of-the-art approach for effective remediation of pharmaceutical wastewater on account of its distinguished adsorption and physicochemical attributes. Amitriptyline is an emerging tricyclic antidepressant pollutant posing severe risks to living habitats through water supply and food chain. With ultra-large surface area and plentiful chemical functional groups, graphene oxide is a favorable adsorbent for decontaminating polluted water.

Unravelling the Clinical Co-Morbidity and Risk Factors Associated with Agenesis of the Corpus Callosum.

Agenesis of the Corpus Callosum (ACC) can result in multiple neurological deficits including social and behavioural issues. However, the underlying aetiology, clinical co-morbidity and the contributing risk factors remain elusive, resulting in inaccurate prognosis and delayed therapy. The main objective of this study was to comprehensively describe the epidemiology and clinical co-morbidity associated with patients diagnosed with ACC.

Pathological combinations in neurodegenerative disease are heterogeneous and disease-associated.

Pathologies that are causative for neurodegenerative disease (ND) are also frequently present in unimpaired, older individuals. In this retrospective study of 1647 autopsied individuals, we report the incidence of 10 pathologies across ND and normal ageing in attempt to clarify which pathological combinations are disease-associated and which are ageing-related. Eight clinically defined groups were examined including unimpaired individuals and those with clinical Alzheimer's disease, mixed dementia, amyotrophic lateral sclerosis, frontotemporal degeneration, multiple system atrophy, probable Lewy body disease or probable tauopathies.

Acute respiratory distress syndrome after SARS-CoV-2 infection on young adult population: International observational federated study based on electronic health records through the 4CE consortium.

Purpose: In young adults (18 to 49 years old), investigation of the acute respiratory distress syndrome (ARDS) after severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2) infection has been limited. We evaluated the risk factors and outcomes of ARDS following infection with SARS-CoV-2 in a young adult population.

Methods: A retrospective cohort study was conducted between January 1st, 2020 and February 28th, 2021 using patient-level electronic health records (EHR), across 241 United States hospitals and 43 European hospitals participating in the Consortium for Clinical Characterization of COVID-19 by EHR (4CE).

Hospitalizations Associated With Mental Health Conditions Among Adolescents in the US and France During the COVID-19 Pandemic.

Importance: The COVID-19 pandemic has been associated with an increase in mental health diagnoses among adolescents, though the extent of the increase, particularly for severe cases requiring hospitalization, has not been well characterized. Large-scale federated informatics approaches provide the ability to efficiently and securely query health care data sets to assess and monitor hospitalization patterns for mental health conditions among adolescents.

Objective: To estimate changes in the proportion of hospitalizations associated with mental health conditions among adolescents following onset of the COVID-19 pandemic.

Association of Preoperative Hyponatremia With Surgical Outcomes: A Systematic Review and Meta-analysis of 32 Observational Studies.

Background: Preoperative hyponatremia is prevalent in patients undergoing surgical procedures, but it is uncertain if hyponatremia will lead to increased risk of surgical mortality and morbidity.

Methods: A systematic search of Medline (PubMed), Embase, and Cochrane Library from inception through July 2, 2021, was performed. Full-length articles that reported on the association between surgical outcomes among adults aged ≥18 years with documented preoperative hyponatremia were included.

Long-term kidney function recovery and mortality after COVID-19-associated acute kidney injury: An international multi-centre observational cohort study.

Background: While acute kidney injury (AKI) is a common complication in COVID-19, data on post-AKI kidney function recovery and the clinical factors associated with poor kidney function recovery is lacking.

Methods: A retrospective multi-centre observational cohort study comprising 12,891 hospitalized patients aged 18 years or older with a diagnosis of SARS-CoV-2 infection confirmed by polymerase chain reaction from 1 January 2020 to 10 September 2020, and with at least one serum creatinine value 1-365 days prior to admission. Mortality and serum creatinine values were obtained up to 10 September 2021.
