The effectiveness of shoe modifications and foot orthoses in conservative treatment of lesser toe deformities: a review of literature.

Forefoot disorders are prevalent in the general population, with an incidence between 2 and 20%. Among them, lesser toe deformities (hammer, claw, and mallet toes) are frequent disorders, and their conservative management is often not adequately considered but usually attempted before surgical indication. Among conservative treatments, shoe modifications and the application of orthoses may, in most cases, alleviate symptoms.

Background: Anastomotic leakage (AL) is the most frequent life-threating complication following colorectal surgery. Several attempts have been made to prevent AL. This prospective, randomized, multicentre trial aimed to evaluate the safety and efficacy of nebulised modified cyanoacrylate in preventing AL after rectal surgery.

Fracture-Related Infection in Bicolumnar Acetabular Fracture: A Case Report.

Case: A 51-year-old man was affected by a fracture-related infection after a bicolumnar acetabular fracture. A significant alteration of the anatomy was present; thus, a 3D-printed model was useful for planning. A two-stage treatment was planned: in the first stage, implant removal with irrigation and debridement was performed, while in the second stage, a new osteosynthesis and implant of a THA were planned.

How Were Healthcare Workers after Anti-SARS-CoV-2 Vaccination? A Study of the Emotional Side Effects of Vaccination.

Anti-SARS-CoV-2 vaccines appear to be the only escape from the COVID-19 pandemic. As healthcare workers were among the first in society to be vaccinated, understanding their emotional status post-vaccination is fundamental to the promotion of COVID-19 vaccines among the rest of society. The aims of this study were to investigate the predictors of positive and negative emotions experienced by healthcare workers after being vaccinated and to understand whether those emotions were related to the modalities of vaccine promotion within the community.

Pediatric Hospitalization for Varicella in an Italian Pediatric Hospital: How Much Does It Cost?

Background: Varicella is a common pediatric infection. Even if it generally has a benign course, it may complicate and require hospitalization. The aim of our study was to estimate the acute hospitalization cost (AHC) for varicella in the acute phase in a pediatric population.

A survey of fungal microbiota in airways of healthy volunteer subjects from Puglia (Apulia), Italy.

Background: The human respiratory tract represents the major portal of entry for numerous microorganisms, primarily those occurring as airborne particles such as viral and bacterial entities, or fungal spores. Microorganism characteristics coupled with the local host immune response will determine whether they will be cleared or adhere and colonize the airways leading to acute or chronic pulmonary disease. Like bacteria, fungi can cause severe lung diseases, but their infection rates are much lower.

Aspergillus spp. colonization in exhaled breath condensate of lung cancer patients from Puglia Region of Italy.

Background: Airways of lung cancer patients are often colonized by fungi. Some of these colonizing fungi, under particular conditions, produce cancerogenic mycotoxins. Given the recent interest in the infective origin of lung cancer, with this preliminary study we aim to give our small contribution to this field of research by analysing the fungal microbiome of the exhaled breath condensate of lung cancer patients from Puglia, a region of Italy.

In December 2000, the Italian Registry of Laparoscopic Surgery of the Spleen (IRLSS) was formally launched under the auspices of the Italian Society for Endoscopic Surgery and New Technologies (SICE). The aim of this multicentre study was to analyse various aspects of the treatment that are still under discussion, such as the extension of the laparoscopic indications in cases of malignancy, independently of the associated splenomegaly, patient selection and operative techniques. A retrospective review of 379 patients undergoing laparoscopic splenectomy for haematological diseases from February 1, 1993, to September 15, 2005, was conducted.

Nine novel APC mutations in Italian FAP patients.

Familial adenomatous polyposis (FAP) is a common hereditary syndrome characterized by early development of colorectal cancer consequent to extensive adenomatous polyps of the colon. In addition to the colonic manifestations the syndrome presents several extracolonic features including polyps of the upper gastrointestinal tract, congenital hypertrophy of the retinal pigment, jaw cysts, osteomata and desmoid tumors. In this study the entire APC coding region has been analysed for mutation in a panel of one Turcot and 33 unrelated Italian FAP patients using SSCP analysis, PTT and DNA sequencing.

Indications, diagnostic validity, and effective reduction of surgical mortality and morbidity of the PTC with PTBD in obstructive jaundice are evaluated. A brief note on the existing controversy in this particular field introduces to the Author's personal opinion based on a small series of 13 cases treated from April '87 to January '89.
