Background: Screening for mental comorbidities and related liaison service can reduce hospital length of stay in somatic hospital care. To develop, test and sustain such health care services, stakeholder feedback is required. One of the most important stakeholders in general hospital care and health care processes are nurses.

This article explains the development and implementation of a psychosomatic screening and consultation service for inpatient somatic care. Approximately one in six somatic inpatients has a mental disorder. It is estimated that only half of these cases are properly identified.

Background: Anxiety and depression are common in the field of inpatient somatic treatment. Especially in dermatology in which the treatment of chronic diseases is very common and the risk of stigmatization by society is particularly high, mental disorders appear in every third patient. Dermatological diseases and mental disorders often negatively interact with each other leading to increased morbidity.

Ikaros modulates cholesterol uptake: a link between tumor suppression and differentiation.

Ikaros is a transcription factor that directs lymphoid lineage commitment and pituitary neuroendocrine cell expansion and function. Here, we show that Ikaros regulates the low-density lipoprotein receptor (LDL-R) to alter metabolism in pituitary corticotroph cells. The DNA-binding Ikaros isoform Ik1 binds and enhances activity of the LDL-R promoter.

Acromegaly: re-thinking the cancer risk.

Acromegaly is characterized by sustained elevation of circulating growth hormone (GH) and insulin-like growth factor I (IGF-I), and is clearly associated with increased morbidity and overall mortality mainly due to cardiovascular, metabolic, and respiratory diseases. Although cancer-related mortality varies widely amongst retroperspective studies, it appears to be consistently elevated mainly in patients with uncontrolled disease. We review individual tumor types including neoplasms of the colon, breast, prostate, and thyroid where in vitro, animal studies, and studies in non-acromegalic cancer patients have established a role for the GH/IGF-I axis in tumor progression and possibly initiation.

Tumor-derived Ikaros 6 acetylates the Bcl-XL promoter to up-regulate a survival signal in pituitary cells.

We reported the expression of the lymphoid zinc finger transcription factor Ikaros (Ik) in the endocrine pituitary gland, where the usual isoforms, Ik1 and Ik2, are thought to play multiple physiological roles. The gene is alternatively spliced to yield a dominant negative isoform, Ik6, in nearly half of human pituitary tumors. We show here that the tumor-specific truncated Ik6 isoform promotes pituitary tumor AtT20 corticotroph and GH4 mammosomatotroph cell growth, evidenced by increased S-phase entry, colony formation in soft agar, and growth of xenografts in vivo.

Expression of the glucocorticoid receptor in the human adrenal cortex.

Glucocorticoids produced in the adrenal cortex act by binding to a specific intracellular protein, the glucocorticoid receptor (GR), which then modulates gene transcription in target tissues. Whether the adrenal cortex itself is a glucocorticoid target tissue has not been analyzed as yet. Since the presence of GR would be a prerequisite for such "intracortical" glucocorticoid action, this study was designed to analyze GR expression in the normal human adrenal gland using RT-PCR, Western blot, and immunohistochemistry.

Recurrent Listeria monocytogenes aortic graft infection: confirmation of relapse by molecular subtyping.

Based on molecular typing methods, we identified a rare case of a recurrent L. monocytogenes infection resulting from an infected aortic prosthesis as detected by 18-F-Fluoro-d-deoxyglucose positron emission tomography (FDG PET). Our case highlights the usefulness of molecular typing and nuclear imaging methods for understanding L.

Frequent mitotic errors in tumor cells of genetically micro-heterogeneous glioblastomas.

Glioblastoma multiforme (GBM) is characterized by intratumoral heterogeneity as to both histomorphology and genetic changes, displaying a wide variety of numerical chromosome aberrations the most common of which are monosomy 10 and trisomy 7. Moreover, GBM in vitro are known to have variable karyotypes within a given tumor cell culture leading to rapid karyotype evolution through a high incidence of secondary numerical chromosome aberrations. The aim of our study was to investigate to what extent this mitotic instability of glioblastoma cells is also present in vivo.

The evolution of oxidative stress indicators in the course of myocardial ischemia.

Two studies were carried out in patients suffering from Unstable Angina (UA) and Myocardial Infarction (MI). The first study investigated the variations of the Malondialdehyde (MDA) rate at 1st, 5th, 12th day of treatment in 27 patients (15 UA and 12 MI), compared to 15 controls. This rate varied in a different way, with a first peak and a rapid decrease in UA, where it regularly decreases in MI.
