The valorization of potato peel side streams for food packaging applications, especially for the substitution of current petrochemical-based oxygen barrier solutions such as EVOH, is becoming increasingly important. Therefore, potato peel-based films and coatings (on PLA) were developed containing 10-50% (/ potato peel) citric acid (CA). To determine the impact of CA concentration on the structure and physicochemical properties of cast films and coatings, ATR-FTIR spectroscopy, moisture adsorption isotherms, tensile properties, light transmittance, oxygen permeability, carbon dioxide transmission rate, and water vapor transmission rate measurements were performed.

Evaluating whether someone's behavior is praiseworthy or blameworthy is a fundamental human trait. A seminal study by Hamlin and colleagues in 2007 suggested that the ability to form social evaluations based on third-party interactions emerges within the first year of life: infants preferred a character who helped, over hindered, another who tried but failed to climb a hill. This sparked a new line of inquiry into the origins of social evaluations; however, replication attempts have yielded mixed results.

Supraspinal contributions to defective antagonistic inhibition and freezing of gait in Parkinson's disease.

The neuromuscular circuit mechanisms of freezing of gait in Parkinson's disease have received little study. Technological progress enables researchers chronically to sense local field potential activity of the basal ganglia in patients while walking. To study subthalamic activity and the circuit processes of supraspinal contributions to spinal motor integration, we recorded local field potentials, surface EMG of antagonistic leg muscles and gait kinematics in patients while walking and freezing.

Objective: Deep brain stimulation of the subthalamic nucleus (STN-DBS) is a well-established treatment option in Parkinson's disease with motor and non-motor fluctuations allowing for postoperative reduction of dopaminergic medication. However, evidence is scarce on optimal medication adjustments following STN-DBS implantation. Opicapone allows for long-lasting inhibition of the catechol--methyltransferase (COMT) thereby enabling more constant dopaminergic stimulation compared to levodopa alone.

Objectives: Platelets, originally described for their role in blood coagulation, are now also recognized as key players in modulating inflammation, tissue regeneration, angiogenesis, and carcinogenesis. Recent evidence suggests that platelets also influence insulin secretion from pancreatic β cells. The multifaceted functions of platelets are mediated by the factors stored in their alpha granules (AGs) and dense granules (DGs).

Relationship of proteins and subclinical cardiovascular traits in the population-based LIFE-Adult study.

Background And Aims: Understanding molecular processes of the early phase of atherosclerotic cardiovascular disease conditions is of utmost importance for early prediction and intervention measures.

Methods: We measured 92 cardiovascular-disease-related proteins (Olink, Cardiovascular III) in 2024 elderly participants of the population-based LIFE-Adult study. We analysed the impact of 27 covariables on these proteins including blood counts, cardiovascular risk factors and life-style-related parameters.

Introduction: Akinetic crisis is a severe deterioration of motor performance occurring in syndromes with pre- or postsynaptic dopaminergic deficit, necessitating effective dopamine replacement therapy. The subcutaneously applicable levodopa derivative foslevodopa represents a new therapeutic option for patients with advanced Parkinson's disease as a continuous therapy. However, its potential role as a parenteral treatment option for akinetic crisis has not been investigated, yet.

The Concept of a Versatile Computing Tool Chain for Utilizing the Core Data Set of the Medical Informatics Initiative in the INTERPOLAR Project.

Introduction: To support research projects that require medical data from multiple sites is one of the goals of the German Medical Informatics Initiative (MII). The data integration centers (DIC) at university medical centers in Germany provide patient data via FHIR® in compliance with the MII core data set (CDS). Requirements for data protection and other legal bases for processing prefer decentralized processing of the relevant data in the DICs and the subsequent exchange of aggregated results for cross-site evaluation.

Background: The mental health benefits of cannabidiol (CBD) are promising but can be inconsistent, in part due to challenges in defining an individual's effective dosage. In schizophrenia, alterations in anandamide (AEA) concentrations, an endocannabinoid (eCB) agonist of the eCB system, reflect positively on treatment with CBD. Here, we expanded this assessment to include eCBs alongside AEA congeners, comparing phytocannabinoids and dosage in a clinical setting.

Objective: The bejective was to determine health literacy (HL) and care aspects of those affected by Long-COVID.

Method: 407 patients with Long-COVID and long-term neuropsychiatric symptoms were interviewed in the LIFE study center. In addition to descriptive analyses, regression models were calculated to examine the relationships between health literacy (HLS-EU-Q16) and various aspects of care (RehaQ-N1).

[The Medical Informatics Initiative at a glance-establishing a health research data infrastructure in Germany].

The Medical Informatics Initiative (MII) funded by the Federal Ministry of Education and Research (BMBF) 2016-2027 is successfully laying the foundations for data-based medicine in Germany. As part of this funding, 51 new professorships, 21 junior research groups, and various new degree programs have been established to strengthen teaching, training, and continuing education in the field of medical informatics and to improve expertise in medical data sciences. A joint decentralized federated research data infrastructure encompassing the entire university medical center and its partners was created in the form of data integration centers (DIC) at all locations and the German Portal for Medical Research Data (FDPG) as a central access point.

The interplay of family history of depression and early trauma: associations with lifetime and current depression in the German national cohort (NAKO).

Introduction: Family history of depression and childhood maltreatment are established risk factors for depression. However, how these factors are interrelated and jointly influence depression risk is not well understood. The present study investigated (i) if childhood maltreatment is associated with a family history of depression (ii) if family history and childhood maltreatment are associated with increased lifetime and current depression, and whether both factors interact beyond their main effects, and (iii) if family history affects lifetime and current depression via childhood maltreatment.

Clinical and radiologic outcomes in patients with meniscal root tears.

Background: Meniscal root tears can lead to early knee osteoarthritis and pain. This study aimed (1) to compare clinical and radiological outcomes between patients who underwent arthroscopic meniscal root repair after meniscal root tears and those who received non-surgical treatment, and (2) to identify whether baseline MRI findings could be potential predictors for future treatment strategies.

Methods: Patients with meniscal root tears were identified from our picture archiving and communication system from 2016 to 2020.

Design: This retrospective study encompassed a cohort of 84 patients diagnosed with T1 stage EC and 55 patients diagnosed with T2 stage EC, who underwent primary treatment between the years 2011 and 2021 at the University Hospital Frankfurt or Jung-Stilling Hospital Siegen.

Investigating the cross talk of different omics layers is crucial to understand molecular pathomechanisms of metabolic diseases like obesity. Here, we present a large-scale association meta-analysis of genome-wide whole blood and peripheral blood mononuclear cell (PBMC) gene expressions profiled with Illumina HT12v4 microarrays and metabolite measurements from dried blood spots (DBS) characterized by targeted liquid chromatography tandem mass spectrometry (LC-MS/MS) in three large German cohort studies with up to 7706 samples. We found 37,295 associations comprising 72 amino acids (AA) and acylcarnitine (AC) metabolites (including ratios) and 8579 transcripts.
