Association between the intensity of statin therapy and physical activity 1 year after acute coronary syndrome: a multicentre prospective cohort study in Switzerland.

Objectives: To assess the association between the intensity of statin therapy and the level of physical activity in patients 1 year after an acute coronary syndrome (ACS).

Design: Prospective cohort study from the Special Program University Medicine-Acute Coronary Syndromes.

Setting: Four university hospital centres in Switzerland.

Epidemiology and Risk Factor Analysis of Systemic Allergic Reaction to Bee Venom in the Slovenian Population of Beekeepers.

Objectives: To estimate the lifetime prevalence of first and recurrent systemic allergic reaction to bee venom among Slovenian beekeepers. Additionally, we aimed to elucidate the risk factors predisposing beekeepers to developing systemic allergic reaction to bee venom.

Methods: A nationwide cross-sectional study was conducted among 1,080 beekeepers who are members of the Slovenian beekeeper's association, between 1 November 2021 and 31 May 2023.

A systematic review and meta-analysis of carfilzomib-associated thrombocytopenia as an adverse event in patients with multiple myeloma.

Background: Carfilzomib is a second-generation proteasome inhibitor (PI) used for combination therapy with dexamethasone and/or lenalidomide in patients with relapsed or refractory multiple myeloma. Reports indicate that PIs have a unique toxicity profile that includes thrombocytopenia as a hematologic adverse event; however, its occurrence has not yet been quantified systematically.

Objectives: The main objective of our systematic review and meta-analysis is to investigate the incidence of thrombocytopenia in patients with multiple myeloma after treatment with carfilzomib.

Oxidative stress-related biomarkers as promising indicators of inflammatory bowel disease activity: A systematic review and meta-analysis.

Oxidative stress is believed to play an important role in the pathogenesis of inflammatory bowel disease (IBD), specifically Crohn's disease (CD) and ulcerative colitis (UC). This meta-analysis aimed to identify and quantify the oxidative stress-related biomarkers in IBD and their associations with disease activity. We systematically searched Ovid MEDLINE, Ovid Embase, and Web of Science databases, identifying 54 studies for inclusion.

Background: Transarterial chemoembolization (TACE) is the treatment of choice for the intermediate stage hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC). Doxorubicin remains the most used chemotherapeutic agent in TACE, although screening has demonstrated that idarubicin exhibits greater cytotoxicity against HCC. This article highlights the applicability of matrixing designs in stability studies for parenteral medications. The traditional approach involves extensive testing over the product's shelf-life. However, matrixing designs offer an alternative approach where only a fraction of samples is tested at each time point.

Gold nanorod-assisted theranostic solution for nonvisible residual disease in bladder cancer.

Residual nonvisible bladder cancer after proper treatment caused by technological and therapeutic limitations is responsible for tumor relapse and progression. This study aimed to demonstrate the feasibility of a solution for simultaneous detection and treatment of bladder cancer lesions smaller than one millimeter. The α5β1 integrin was identified as a specific marker in 81% of human high-grade nonmuscle invasive bladder cancers and used as a target for the delivery of targeted gold nanorods (GNRs).

Application of a Novel Dissolution Medium with Lipids for In Vitro Simulation of the Postprandial Gastric Content.

Food can change various physiological parameters along the gastrointestinal tract, potentially impacting postprandial drug absorption. It is thus important to consider different in vivo conditions during in vitro studies. Therefore, a novel dissolution medium simulating variable postprandial pH values and lipid concentrations was developed and used in this study.

Purpose: Metadata for data dIscoverability aNd study rEplicability in obseRVAtional studies (MINERVA), a European Medicines Agency-funded project (EUPAS39322), defined a set of metadata to describe real-world data sources (RWDSs) and piloted metadata collection in a prototype catalogue to assist investigators from data source discoverability through study conduct.

Methods: A list of metadata was created from a review of existing metadata catalogues and recommendations, structured interviews, a stakeholder survey, and a technical workshop. The prototype was designed to comply with the FAIR principles (findable, accessible, interoperable, reusable), using MOLGENIS software.

Years of Life Lost to COVID-19 and Related Mortality Indicators: An Illustration in 30 Countries.

The concept of (potential) years of life lost is a measure of premature mortality that can be used to compare the impacts of different specific causes of death. However, interpreting a given number of years of life lost at face value is more problematic because of the lack of a sensible reference value. In this paper, we propose three denominators to divide an excess years of life lost, thus obtaining three indicators, called average life lost, increase of life lost, and proportion of life lost, which should facilitate interpretation and comparisons.

Contrast enhanced photoacoustic detection of fibrillar collagen in the near infrared region-I.

Fibrillar collagen accumulation emerges as a promising biomarker in several diseases, such as desmoplastic tumors and unstable atherosclerotic plaque. Gold nanorods (GNRs) hold great potential as contrast agents in high-resolution, biomedically safe, and non-invasive photoacoustic imaging (PAI). This study presents the design and characterization of a specialized imaging tool which exploits GNR assisted targeted photoacoustic imaging that is tailored for the identification of fibrillar collagen.

A randomized, placebo-controlled study of chitosan gel for the treatment of chronic diabetic foot ulcers (the CHITOWOUND study).

Introduction: To assess the efficacy of a chitosan-based gel (ChitoCare) for the treatment of non-healing diabetic foot ulcers (DFUs).

Research Design And Methods: Forty-two patients with chronic DFUs were randomized to the ChitoCare or placebo gel for a 10-week treatment period and 4-week follow-up. The primary study end point was the rate of complete wound closure at week 10, presented as relative rate.

Background: Long-term control of cardiovascular risk factors after acute coronary syndrome (ACS) is the cornerstone for preventing recurrence. We investigated the extent of cardiovascular risk factor management in males and females with and without familial hypercholesterolemia (FH) 5 years after ACS.

Methods: We studied patients hospitalized for ACS between 2009 and 2017 in a Swiss multicenter prospective cohort study.

A systematic literature review and meta-analysis aimed to estimate the prevalence of self-reported systemic allergic reaction to venom among beekeepers worldwide.

Methods: We rigorously reviewed and conducted meta-analysis on observational studies retrieved from seven electronic databases (MEDLINE via PubMed, Web of Science Core Collection, Scopus, Academic Search Complete, ScienceDirect, Cumulative Index to Nursing and Allied Health Literature, Zoological Record), spanning data from inception to August 1, 2023.

A pharmacist-led interprofessional medication adherence program improved adherence to oral anticancer therapies: The OpTAT randomized controlled trial.

Background: Oral anticancer therapies such as protein kinase inhibitors (PKIs) are increasingly prescribed in cancer care. We aimed to evaluate the impact of a pharmacist-led interprofessional medication adherence program (IMAP) on patient implementation (dosing history), persistence (time until premature cessation of the treatment) and adherence to 27 PKIs prescribed for various solid cancers, as well as the impact on patients' beliefs about medicines (BAM) and quality of life (QoL).

This study investigates the 10-year trend in the sedative and anticholinergic burden among older adults in Slovenia, with the aim of identifying opportunities to optimize pharmacotherapy in this population. A retrospective drug utilization analysis was conducted based on a national anonymized database of dispensed prescriptions from 2009 to 2019. The study employed the sedative load model and the anticholinergic cognitive burden scale to assess the sedative and anti cholinergic burden, respectively.

[Is mortality an objective indicator for measuring the impact of an epidemic?: The example of Covid-19 in Switzerland].

Measuring the health impact of an epidemic using appropriate indicators is necessarily complex. Mortality does not sum up all the issues, but at least it seems to be an objective indicator. There are, however, a number of different mortality indicators, which do not all convey the same message.
