Effective conservation requires a variety of perspectives that center on different ways of knowing. Disciplinary diversity and inclusion (DDI) offers an important means of integrating different ways of knowing into pressing conservation challenges. However, DDI means more than multiple disciplinary approaches to conservation; cognitive diversity and epistemic justice are key.

A framework for promoting disciplinary diversity and inclusion through epistemic justice.

Integrating diverse disciplines and knowledge practices into conservation offers new insights into the complex socioecological dynamics of conservation challenges and how to address them. Integration, however, is not simple; disciplines differ widely in their epistemic and professional commitments, theories, methods, applications, practices, and codes of ethics. Using an epistemic justice approach, we examined how and why different forms of disciplinary and social diversity are connected and offer a framework for promoting disciplinary diversity for conservation science and practice.

Manuka Essential Oil Triggers Apoptosis and Activation of c-Jun N-Terminal Kinase in Fibroblasts and Fibrosarcoma Cells.

Manuka essential oil has long been used in traditional medicine, though the effects of the oil on cancer cells have limited studies. The goal of this project was to treat cancer cell lines with manuka essential oil at different concentrations and to ascertain the effects on the cell proliferation of normal fibroblast (CUA-4) and on fibrosarcoma (HT-1080) cells. Cell lines were grown on 24-well plates, and subconfluent cultures were treated with varying concentrations of manuka oil for 24 h.

Challenges in Enhanced Recovery After Surgery (ERAS) research.

Despite the general agreement that implementation of Enhanced Recovery After Surgery (ERAS) pathways decrease hospital length of stay, a continuous challenge that has often been neglected is a procedure- and patient-specific approach. An unusual variant of type I common bile duct duplication associated with ampullary carcinoma.

Common bile duct duplications represent exceptionally rare congenital anomalies of the biliary tract. In this case report we document an unusual variant of common bile duct duplication in a 79-year-old man who underwent a pancreaticoduodenectomy for ampullary cancer. The duplication consisted of two unseparated, completely-layered, common bile ducts which originated above the cystic duct junction and terminated prior to the point of insertion into the pancreas, where the two lumens converged into a single duct.

Abnormal neurovascular control during central and peripheral chemoreceptors stimulation in heart failure patients with preserved ejection fraction.

Purpose: Central and peripheral chemoreceptors are hypersensitized in patients with heart failure with reduced ejection fraction. Whether this autonomic alteration occurs in patients with heart failure with preserved ejection fraction (HFpEF) remains little known. We test the hypothesis that the central and peripheral chemoreflex control of muscle sympathetic nerve activity (MSNA) is altered in HFpEF.

Immunohistochemical inflammation in histologically normal gallbladders containing gallstones.

Background: The aim of this study was to establish features of inflammation in histologically normal gallbladders with gallstones and compare the expression of inflammatory markers in acutely and chronically inflamed gallbladders.

Methods: Immunohistochemistry was performed on formalin-fixed paraffin-embedded gallbladders for tumor necrosis factor (TNF)-α, interleukin (IL)-6, IL-2R, and substance p in three groups: Group I (n = 60) chronic cholecystitis, Group II (n = 57) acute cholecystitis and Group III (n = 45) histologically normal gallbladders with gallstones. Expression was quantified using the H-scoring system.
