Objectives: To asses mid-term clinical outcomes of bioresorbable vascular scaffolds (BVS) for the treatment of coronary artery disease in a large-scale all-comers population.
Background: Several clinical settings are underrepresented in randomized studies investigating BVS against drug-eluting stents. Whether their results can be translated into the heterogeny patient population seen during daily routine requires further investigation.
A multi-disciplinary work group involving stakeholders from various backgrounds and societies was convened to develop guidelines for the management of reconstruction after skin cancer resection. The goal was to identify areas of common ground and provide evidence-based recommendations to improve patient care. Given the heterogeneity of reconstructive techniques and clinical scenarios, investigation centered around common elements in the process.

There are only scarce data about its use, efficacy, and safety in unselected patients in Germany.
Methods And Results: The APAF registry is a prospective non-interventional study enrolling 5015 patients with non-valvular atrial fibrillation.
Background: Microplegia has been studied during isolated coronary artery bypass grafting and valve surgery but not in more complex operations. Objectives of this study were to demonstrate safety and effectiveness of microplegia relative to Buckberg cardioplegia during these operations.
Methods: From January 2012 to January 2017, 242 patients underwent multicomponent operations with simplified microplegia delivered via syringe pump and 10,512 with modified Buckberg cardioplegia.
Aims: To investigate the long-term prognostic value of aspiration thrombectomy in conjunction with primary percutaneous coronary intervention (PCI) compared to conventional PCI in patients with non-ST-elevation myocardial infarction (NSTEMI).
Methods: In the randomized TATORT-NSTEMI (Thrombus aspiration in thrombus containing culprit lesions in non-ST-elevation myocardial infarction) trial, NSTEMI patients with thrombus containing culprit lesions were randomized to either PCI with aspiration thrombectomy or conventional PCI. The endpoint was a combination of all-cause death, reinfarction and new congestive heart failure.
Introduction: The European CRT Survey II was introduced to offer insights into CRT implantation practice in Europe. We compared the national data from the participating German centres with that of the other European countries with regard to differences in patient selection, implant results, and initial properties.
Methods And Results: 11,088 patients were enrolled in 288 centres from 42 countries between 2015 and 2017.
Objectives: This study sought to compare sex difference for procedural aspects and complications in the European Society of Cardiology CRT Survey II, exploring whether adverse events were related to the type of CRT device implanted.
Background: Sex-related differences in procedural aspects and complications in patients undergoing cardiac resynchronization therapy (CRT) implantation has not been explored in a real-life population.
Methods: A post-hoc analysis of procedural data and complications in different sexes and factors associated with events was performed from data collected in the European Society of Cardiology CRT Survey II.
Although patients are able to speak openly about their healthcare experience in negative reviews, laws protecting the privacy of the patient constrain providers from responding as freely. Unfortunately, violation of this principle occurs when responding to online patient criticism. We describe a case of a physician assistant revealing protected health information of a patient in response to a critical New York Times article.

Whether rFVIIa increases the risk of postoperative adverse events is unclear. We tested whether rFVIIa administration was associated with increased mortality and neurologic and renal morbidity in patients undergoing cardiac surgery.

The American Academy of Dermatology in collaboration with the American College of Mohs Surgery, the American Society for Dermatologic Surgery Association, and the American Society for Mohs Surgery has developed appropriate use criteria for 270 scenarios for which Mohs micrographic surgery (MMS) is frequently considered based on tumor and patient characteristics. This document reflects the rating of appropriateness of MMS for each of these clinical scenarios by a ratings panel in a process based on the appropriateness method developed by the RAND Corp (Santa Monica, CA)/University of California-Los Angeles (RAND/UCLA).

This requires intensive nursing only achievable in an intensive care unit (ICU) setting. Glucose management after transfer to a regular nursing floor (RNF) has not been studied systematically.

Objectives: The primary objective of this study was to analyze perioperative intra-aortic balloon pump (IABP) insertion in patients undergoing cardiac surgery in the authors' institution from 1995 to 2005 and to propose an explanation for changes in use over this period. A secondary objective was to assess patient variables associated with IABP use.
Design: This is a retrospective study including patients who underwent cardiac surgery between 1995 and 2005.
Background: Successful bridging to transplantation (BTT) with ventricular assist devices (VAD) is an alternative to mitigate the effects of end-stage heart failure on organ function while awaiting a heart. The effects of long-term VAD BTT on patient outcomes following transplantation are poorly studied.
Methods: A retrospective chart review identified 145 patients BTT with a VAD between November of 1996 and June of 2005 at the Cleveland Clinic.
Background: Indiscriminate antibiotic use may lead to development of antibiotic resistance. Preoperative mupirocin treatment decreases Staphylococcus aureus carriage and may reduce subsequent surgical site infection, but is unlikely to benefit noncarriers. This study was undertaken to evaluate whether avoiding mupirocin in noncarriers places them at increased risk for subsequent postoperative infection.

We hypothesized that allosensitized VAD patients have higher levels of immunosuppression and thus different morbidity and causes of mortality.
Methods: Patients who received a transplant between January 1996 and May 2002 were separated into 2 groups based on the need for VAD support as a bridge to transplantation.
Background: Viral infections are important causes of myocarditis and may induce cardiac dysfunction and finally lead to dilated cardiomyopathy. We investigated whether interferon (IFN)-beta therapy is safe and may achieve virus clearance and prevent deterioration of left ventricular (LV) function in patients with myocardial virus persistence.
Methods And Results: In this phase II study, 22 consecutive patients with persistence of LV dysfunction (history of symptoms, 44+/-27 months) and polymerase chain reaction-proven enteroviral or adenoviral genomes were treated with 18x10(6) IU/week IFN-beta (Beneferon) subcutaneously for 24 weeks.
Clinical pharmacy services in the critical care setting have expanded dramatically and include assisting physicians in pharmacotherapy decision making, providing pharmacokinetic consultations, monitoring patients for drug efficacy and safety, providing drug information, and offering medical education to physicians, nurses, and patients. Measurable clinical effects of these services include reduced drug errors and adverse drug events, decreased morbidity and mortality rates, and a positive pharmacoeconomic impact by decreasing overall health care costs.

According to current concepts, the Ad E1B 55 kDa (E1B 55K) protein enables transformed cells to grow by constantly binding and inactivating the p53 tumour suppressor protein. To test this model, the transcriptional activity of p53 was determined in Ad E1-transformed cells.

We have demonstrated here the expression of the glycoprotein precursor of Hantaan virus following transfection of mammalian cells. The cleavage of the precursor into the glycoproteins G1 and G2 followed the rules for signal peptides and seemed to occur directly at the pentapeptide motif "WAASA.
