Background: In ophthalmologic surgery, there are usually short operation times and thus many changes between the individual operations, which are not subject to remuneration. As in maximum care hospitals consecutive different operations with different durations are often performed, emergency operations have to be inserted and further training of colleagues is practiced, it is particularly important to generate the shortest possible transfer times in order to have both sufficient operation time and to be able to treat as many cases as possible. The aim of this work is to evaluate the efficiency of the surgical performance of a university eye hospital.

Background: If the endotracheal placement of a nasal advanced tube fails, ventilation via this tube could bridge the time until a fibreoptic bronchoscope is available. This study investigates the efficiency of ventilation via a tube resting with its tip in the pharynx near the glottis.

Methods: In 20 patients respiratory data during ventilation via a pharyngeally placed tube were recorded by means of pulse oximetry, capnometry and side-stream spirometry.

Orthotopic liver transplantation (OLT) is frequently associated with systemic fibrinogenolysis and diffuse bleeding. At present antifibrinolytic treatment has not been initiated routinely in OLT. Therefore the influence of high dose aprotinin in OLT (2 million kallikrein inactivator units (KIU) given after induction of anesthesia followed by a 500,000 KIU/h infusion throughout the operation) on intraoperative blood loss and fibrinolysis was studied in 25 patients compared to 25 patients without aprotinin.
