This work describes results of a first proof of the concept of electrorefinery with a real waste obtained from a cashew nut factory, and it shows the effect of the current densities of both the anodic oxidation and electrochemically assisted separation processes on the performance of the system. Results obtained demonstrate that electrorefinery is a promising option to minimize the carbon fingerprint, worth studying for increasing the sustainability of the environmental remediation of wastes, because valuable species can be obtained from the destruction of pollutants and recovered within the same integrated process. They also point out that there is still a long way to reach an optimum solution for this technology, but it is worth the effort to be made.

Introduction: To examine the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic on mortality, we estimated excess all-cause mortality in 24 countries for 2020 and 2021, overall and stratified by sex and age.

Methods: Total, age-specific and sex-specific weekly all-cause mortality was collected for 2015-2021 and excess mortality for 2020 and 2021 was calculated by comparing weekly 2020 and 2021 age-standardised mortality rates against expected mortality, estimated based on historical data (2015-2019), accounting for seasonality, and long-term and short-term trends. Age-specific weekly excess mortality was similarly calculated using crude mortality rates.

Resuscitative endovascular balloon occlusion of the aorta (REBOA) is commonly used as an adjunct to resuscitation and bridge to definitive control of non-compressible torso hemorrhage in patients with hemorrhagic shock. It has also been performed for patients with neurogenic shock to support the central aortic pressure necessary for cerebral, coronary and spinal cord perfusion. Although volume replacement and vasopressors are the cornerstones of the management of neurogenic shock, we believe that a REBOA can be used as an adjunct in carefully selected cases to prevent prolonged hypotension and the risk of further anoxic spinal cord injury.
