Background: Acute kidney injury (AKI) is increasingly being recognized after hepatectomy. This study aimed to identify factors predicting its occurrence and its impact on long-term outcome among patients with hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC).

Methods: This was a retrospective analysis of the incidence of AKI, factors predicting its occurrence, and its impact on patients undergoing hepatectomy between September 2007 and December 2018.

Background: Despite the profound number of malignant pleural mesothelioma (MPM) patients now treated with programmed cell death 1 (PD-1) blockade, insight into the underpinnings of rational therapeutic strategies to treat resistance to checkpoint immunotherapy remains unrealized. Our objective was to develop a novel therapeutic approach to overcome primary resistance to PD-1 blockade in MPM.

Methods: We generated a transcriptome signature of resistance to PD-1 blockade in MPM patients treated with nivolumab (4 responders and 4 nonresponders).

Background And Purpose: Inflammatory mediators in blood have been proposed as potential biomarkers in stroke. However, a direct relationship between these circulating factors and brain-specific ischemic injury remains to be fully defined.

Methods: An unbiased screen in a nonhuman primate model of stroke was used to find out the most responsive circulating biomarker flowing ischemic stroke.

The recycling of unfiltered spent media during cultivation of Chlorella vulgaris was studied using metabolomics in an effort to enhance water and nutrient sustainability and reduce operating costs in algal biorefineries. Cultivation in spent media resulted in reduced biomass and lipid productivity by 14% and 19%, respectively, compared to fresh media. The decrease was related to a detected lower nutrient uptake.

Early childhood caries is common in Hong Kong, and parental practices on maintaining good oral health of their young children are far from satisfactory. This article reports on the effectiveness of a randomized controlled trial on family-centered oral health promotion to new parents in establishing proper feeding habits and oral hygiene practices and in reducing caries risk among 3-y-old toddlers. At baseline, pregnant mothers and their husbands were recruited and randomly allocated into 2 groups.

Objective: This meta-evaluation aimed to summarize all available evidence regarding different fissure sealants on occlusal caries prevention, arrest, retention rate, adverse effect, and cost-effectiveness; when compared with no intervention, other preventive or minimally-invasive procedures.

Materials And Methods: The systematic reviews and meta-analyses were identified via four electronic databases and manual searching. Two independent reviewers performed study selection, data extraction, quality assessment with AMSTAR-2.

Current climatic conditions limit the distribution of () (Skuse, Diptera: Culicidae) in the north, but predictive climate models suggest this species could establish itself in southern Canada by 2040. A vector of chikungunya, dengue, yellow fever, Zika and West Nile viruses, the has been detected in Windsor, Ontario since 2016. Given the potential public health implications, and knowing that can easily be introduced by ground transportation, this study aimed to determine if specimens could be detected, using an adequate methodology, in southern Québec.

Case: A 21-year-old woman with a history of multiple failed surgical and conservative management for recurrent involuntary shoulder instability presented with 1-year history of shoulder pain. Physical examination demonstrated intractable static anterior glenohumeral instability, deficient capsular tissue, with reducible scapular winging secondary to long thoracic nerve palsy. Allograft capsular reconstruction and open split pectoralis major tendon transfer were performed to salvage shoulder motion and stabilize her shoulder girdle.

Unlabelled: This study investigated the effect of strontium-doped bioactive glass (SBAG) on the formation of dental demineralized lesions.

Materials And Methods: The study materials were 48 sound human tooth specimens with both dentine and enamel, divided equally into four groups: Group 1 (SBAG), Group 2 (SBAG+Fluoride), Group 3 (Fluoride), and Group 4 (Water as control). After 14 days of pH cycling, the surface morphology of the specimens was observed by scanning electron microscopy.

Introduction: Quitlines are an important and widespread intervention that support smokers in their efforts to quit smoking and engage them into treatment services. Quebec's quitline, called "la ligne J'ARRÊTE", has been in operation since 2002. The objectives of this study were to evaluate treatment reach, provide a description of caller characteristics and to provide results on cessation outcome measures for Quebec's smoking cessation quitline.

Storm surges caused by tropical cyclones (TCs) are one of the costliest threats to coastal communities in southern China. Numerical surge models remain computationally challenging when used to simulate the large number of TC events required for probabilistic hazard assessments at regional scale. The present study demonstrates the applicability of a simple 1D steady-state storm surge representation for such regional scale hazard assessment.

Objectives: The Quebec Public Health Institute (INSPQ) was mandated to develop an automated tool for detecting space-time COVID-19 case clusters to assist regional public health authorities in identifying situations that require public health interventions. This article aims to describe the methodology used and to document the main outcomes achieved.

Methods: New COVID-19 cases are supplied by the "Trajectoire de santé publique" information system, geolocated to civic addresses and then aggregated by day and dissemination area.

Background: Silver diamine fluoride (SDF) and sodium fluoride (NaF) are widely used for caries management. The objectives of this study are (i) to compare the caries-arresting and caries-preventive effects of SDF and NaF in young children, (ii) to determine children's and parents' acceptance of these fluoride therapies and (iii) to investigate the short-term (1 day) and long-term (1 year) adverse effects of these fluoride therapies.

Methods/design: This is a randomised, double-blind, active-controlled clinical trial to be conducted in Hong Kong kindergartens.

Background: The definition of acute kidney injury (AKI), based on serum creatinine and urine output, bears significant limitations in intensive care units (ICUs). Serum creatinine has significant lag-time as it needs to be accumulated and stabilized at a new level whereas urine output is affected by diuresis, antidiuresis, and antinatriuresis. Direct measurement of creatinine clearance (CrCl = urine creatinine × urine flow rate/serum creatinine) over a short interval (3-6 hours) was explored to identify patients with AKI.

Safe disposal of effluent from palm oil production poses an environmental concern. The highly polluting effluent is customarily treated by unsustainable open ponds with low efficiency, direct emissions, and massive land use. This study looks into an application of integrated anaerobic/oxic/oxic scheme for treatment of high strength palm oil mill effluent.

Article Synopsis
  • - The study aimed to assess how effective motivational interviewing (MI) is in changing unhealthy snack habits and toothbrushing frequency among adolescents, potentially preventing dental caries.
  • - Five hundred twelve adolescents were split into three groups: one received standard health education, another underwent face-to-face MI, and the last used a communication tool with MI to encourage behavior change.
  • - After two years, those in the MI groups showed significantly lower rates of frequent snacking and fewer cavities compared to the health education group, demonstrating that MI was more effective in improving oral health behaviors.

White matter damage caused by cerebral hypoperfusion is a major hallmark of subcortical ischemic vascular dementia (SIVD), which is the most common subtype of vascular cognitive impairment and dementia (VCID) syndrome. In an aging society, the number of SIVD patients is expected to increase; however, effective therapies have yet to be developed. To understand the pathological mechanisms, we analyzed the profiles of the cells of the corpus callosum after cerebral hypoperfusion in a preclinical SIVD model.
