Post-Acute Sequelae of COVID-19 (PASC) encompasses persistent neurological symptoms, including olfactory and autonomic dysfunction. Here, we report chronic neurological dysfunction in mice infected with a virulent mouse-adapted SARS-CoV-2 that does not infect the brain. Long after recovery from nasal infection, we observed loss of tyrosine hydroxylase (TH) expression in olfactory bulb glomeruli and neurotransmitter levels in the substantia nigra (SN) persisted.

The functional complementarity of the vestibulo-ocular reflex (VOR) and optokinetic reflex (OKR) allows for optimal combined gaze stabilization responses (CGR) in light. While sensory substitution has been reported following complete vestibular loss, the capacity of the central vestibular system to compensate for partial peripheral vestibular loss remains to be determined. The nanofiltration performance of three commercial membranes was analyzed by the Steric Pore Model (SPM) and the extended Nernst-Planck diffusion equation inside membrane pores. The model was completed with the equation to predict the concentration polarization, and the mass transfer coefficient was determined by considering the presence of a feed spacer. The model parameters that characterized the performance of the membrane were the hydrodynamic coefficient, which accounts for the possible variations in solute size and membrane pore radius, the effective membrane thickness, and the water permeability coefficient.

Highly permeable polyamide reverse osmosis (RO) membranes are desirable for reducing the energy burden and ensuring future water resources in arid and semiarid regions. One notable drawback of thin film composite (TFC) polyamide RO/NF membranes is the polyamide's sensitivity to degradation by free chlorine, the most used biocide in water purification trains. This investigation demonstrated a significant increase in the crosslinking-degree parameter by the m-phenylenediamine (MPD) chemical structure extending in the thin film nanocomposite (TFN) membrane without adding extra MPD monomers to enhance the chlorine resistance and performance.

The vestibular ganglion contains primary sensory neurons that are postsynaptic to the transducing hair cells (HC) and project to the central nervous system. Understanding the response of these neurons to HC stress or loss is of great interest as their survival and functional competence will determine the functional outcome of any intervention aiming at repair or regeneration of the HCs. We have shown that subchronic exposure to the ototoxicant 3,3'-iminodipropionitrile (IDPN) in rats and mice causes a reversible detachment and synaptic uncoupling between the HCs and the ganglion neurons.

The present study provides an overall view of the effect of the ultrasound treatment on waste activated sludge (WAS) rheological and dewatering properties as well as its impact on the economic balance of a theoretical wastewater treatment plant. The results showed that ultrasonication at 27,000 kJ/kg TS increased the soluble protein concentration (> 100%), bound water content (∼25%), and capillary suction time (> 100%) of WAS. The molecular weight distribution of the extracellular polymeric substances (EPS) revealed that the ultrasound treatment solubilised a portion of the peptides and low-molecular-weight proteins.
