A cohort of 4,163 persons reported to the nationwide Swedish Cancer Registry by reason of hyperparathyroidism was followed for up to 22 completed years (24,593 person-years of observation). The occurrence of malignant disease manifested after parathyroid surgery was investigated through computerized linkage to the entire Cancer Registry. During the entire period, the hyperparathyroidism patients suffered malignant diseases significantly more often than the background population (relative risk (RR) = 1.

Serum concentrations of parathyroid hormone (PTH), calcium, magnesium, phosphate and myoglobin were measured regularly during a 5-d recovery period in 17 men who had participated in a 7-d field exercise maneuver with intense physical activity. Immediately after the exercise, there was an increase in serum PTH levels of the same magnitude as the maximal rise during a hypocalcemic test. The rise in PTH was not related to changes in serum electrolytes, but was significantly correlated to an increase in serum myoglobin, indicating that those who performed the largest amount of work also experienced the greatest stimulus for secretion of PTH.

The present study investigated, in eight healthy males, the effects of orally administered propranolol or verapamil during a 2-min maximal, isokinetic, leg exercise. Immediately after exercise the plasma ionized calcium concentrations were increased, in control and drug tests, by 5-6%, and within 5 min of recovery they were almost returned to baseline.

Indices of glucose and lipoprotein metabolism as well as blood pressure were measured in nine patients with chronic renal failure who were on regular hemodialysis. Before treatment all patients had serum calcium values within the normal range, but elevated levels of parathyroid hormone (PTH). When serum calcium was raised above the normal range by treatment with alphacalcidol, all patients displayed marked suppression of PTH levels with a mean reduction of 40 +/- 20% (SD; p less than 0.

In order to analyse interactions between the variables, multivariate statistical analyses were employed. The patients with untreated hypertension had higher [Ca2+]i values in non-activated platelets (P = 0.

The purpose of this study was to investigate muscular function in HPT quantitatively and to evaluate the effect of parathyroid surgery in this respect. The maximal isokinetic muscle strength (peak torque) of knee extension and flexion was measured with a Cybex-II dynamometer in 16 patients with primary HPT (mean serum calcium 2.

In the present study 65 men, aged 61-65 years, with impaired glucose tolerance were enrolled in a prospective, double-blind, placebo-controlled study over 12 weeks evaluating the effects of 0.75 microgram alphacalcidol, a synthetic analog to the active metabolite of vitamin D.

This critical review of the literature, however, demonstrates that there is little epidemiologic support for the hypothesis that a low urine volume is an important risk factor for renal stones in temperate climates. Few clinical studies have attempted to elucidate if a large diuresis can prevent further stone formation in a recurrent renal stone former.

Multivariate techniques of statistical analysis were employed to test the hypothesis of different relationships between blood pressure and calcium metabolism within the subpopulations and to eliminate confounding effects of age, sex and obesity. Plasma ionized calcium was inversely related and the urinary calcium excretion positively related to blood pressure in the total group.

Hypercalcaemia can be caused by malignant diseases as well as by primary hyperparathyroidism (HPT). The two disorders may occur together and an accurate discrimination between them is sometimes not possible from basal measurements of calcium and parathyroid hormone (PTH) concentrations. In primary HPT the regulation of PTH secretion is maintained, albeit the set-point is shifted to a hypercalcaemic value.

Primary cultures of adult bovine parathyroid cells grown for up to 8 days were used to study the relationship between regulation of parathyroid hormone (PTH) release, cytoplasmic Ca2+ (Ca2+i) and cell growth. Cell counting indicated that proliferation was inversely proportional to the seeding density. The culture was associated with cell enlargement without apparent relation to the proliferation rate.

Mortality was significantly higher than expected during the first postoperative years, for both men and women. This was predominantly due to a higher than expected incidence of diseases of the circulatory organs.

Only recently, however, has the possibility been considered that blood pressure regulation could be influenced by calcium homeostasis. A background for these studies has been provided by the epidemiological observations which link hypertension to a low dietary intake of calcium as well as experimental studies in animals, mostly rats, which have demonstrated that various disturbances of calcium metabolism are related to a raised blood pressure.

The parathyroid glands contain sympathetic nerve endings and the parathyroid cells are endowed with beta-adrenergic receptors. The physiological role of the sympathoadrenal system for the secretion of parathyroid hormone (PTH) has, however, not been clarified. Using the technique of lower body negative pressure (LBNP), which is an established method to achieve sympathetic nerve activation, it was found in 17 healthy subjects that the venous serum levels of PTH were reduced by 7% within 20 min [from 0.
