Spinal arteriovenous shunts (sAVSs) are an uncommon disease, constituting 3 to 4% of intradural lesions; 70% of these lesions are spinal arteriovenous fistulas (sAVFs), whereas spinal arteriovenous malformations (sAVMs) are rarer. Both share the problem of their classification due to the heterogeneity of their angioarchitecture. The aim of this study is to report a series of sAVSs treated in the neurosurgery department of the Hospital Nacional Guillermo Almenara during the 2018-2020 period and to present an overview of the current literature on sAVS classification.

Parkinson's disease (PD) is a progressive neurodegenerative disease, whose main neuropathological finding is pars compacta degeneration due to the accumulation of Lewy bodies and Lewy neurites, and subsequent dopamine depletion. This leads to an increase in the activity of the subthalamic nucleus (STN) and the internal globus pallidus (GPi). Understanding functional anatomy is the key to understanding and developing new targets and new technologies that could potentially improve motor and non-motor symptoms in PD.

Background: Central retinal artery occlusion (CRAO) is a rare acute disease associated with great morbidity. It is reported as a complication of surgical procedures, but rarely associated with brain surgery and no reports before due to parasagittal meningioma resection.

Case Description: We present the case of a 41-year-old female who underwent surgery for a parasagittal meningioma and developed a bilateral CRAO as an acute postoperative complication.

Microvascular anastomosis is one of the most challenging neurosurgical techniques. Mastering this technique allows to perform intracranial bypass with arteries of small caliber usually placed in deep narrow surgical fields. The aim of this paper is to describe step by step end-to-side microanastomosis training method by using polyvinyl alcohol (PVA) hydrogel tubing as it is easily reproducible.

Environmental empowering to control resource consumption and environmental impacts is critical to engage citizens to adopt more sustainable habits. This study demonstrates the potential benefits of innovative approaches based on sustainability indicators towards a low-carbon economy. A methodology to measure and promote sustainability in schools has been proposed and evaluated, aiming at showing the environmental performance and informing of potential environmental savings.

Lizana, JA, Bachero-Mena, B, Calvo-Lluch, A, Sánchez-Moreno, M, Pereira, LA, Loturco, I, and Pareja-Blanco, F. Do faster, stronger, and more powerful athletes perform better in resisted sprints? J Strength Cond Res 36(7): 1826-1832, 2022-This study aimed to analyze the relationships between different strength, power, and speed abilities and resisted sprint performance across a wide range of sled loads (10, 30, and 50% body mass [BM]). Seventy-nine young physically active male sport science students (age: 22.

Background/aims: Although water resistance therapy (WRT) has been widely used in voice training, no data are supporting the effectiveness of WRT as vocal warm-up for singers. The present study aimed to determine the effects of WRT as a vocal warm-up method in contemporary commercial music (CCM) singers.

Methods: Twenty-two CCM singers were randomly assigned to one of two types of 15-min vocal warm-up: open vocal tract (OVT) warm-up and WRT.

Genetic generalised epilepsy or epilepsy of unknown cause can remit before adolescence. In many children, the disease does not interfere with their academic achievement. Although there are neuropsychological studies characterising the cognitive profile, there are no studies in this population focused on spatial orientation abilities.

Purpose: To analyze the viability of using SITRACC(®) (single-portal access) to make partial or total nephrectomy in pigs and also to describe the technical difficulties found during these surgical procedures.

Methods: Ten pigs (Landrace specie) with 20 kg in average were distributed in two groups: Group A - total right nephrectomy - and Group B - partial left nephrectomy -. The anesthetic procedure was initially done with thiopental (10 mg/kg) and maintained with halothane.

Purpose: Evaluate the renal blood flow by using a laser flow meter, Laserflow Vasamedics®, after the ischemia/reperfusion in two different times of the arterial renal vessel clamping.

Methods: The renal blood flow was evaluated by using a laser flow meter after two different times of ischemia/reperfusion procedure, 30 and 60 minutes. It was used 20 Wistar male rats, divided in two groups of 10 rats: Group A (30 minutes of ischemia on the left kidney, with later analysis of the blood flow in 1, 5 and 20, after the renal reperfusion start) and Group B (60 minutes of ischemia on the left kidney, with later analysis of the blood flow in 1, 5 and 20 minutes, after the renal reperfusion start).

Purpose: Analyse the histologic changes of rat kidneys perfused with isotonic saline solution (ISS), Euro-Collins solution (ECS) and Euro-Collins solution with diltiazem (ECSD).

Methods: Thirty-six Wistar rats were used divided equally, as follow: group A (ISS), group B (ECS) and group C (ECSD). Through a catheter placed into the abdominal aorta, a renal perfusion was performed using a solution according to the group to which the animal belonged.

An overall constancy in the total protein profile of human seminal plasma (HSP) as determined by gel filtration chromatography and high-resolution electrophoresis was found in six healthy volunteers. Thirteen different proteins were identified by double immunodiffusion in five individual HSP samples each previously subjected to gel filtration. It was also found that comparatively large amounts of yet unidentified low-molecular-weight (less than 12,000) compounds occurred in all HSP samples.

A routine method for the analysis of Vitamin D-binding protein (Gc-globulin) phenotypes has been developed. The assay is based on isoelectric focusing in a narrow pH interval (4.5-5.

A substance with TPA immunoreactivity is present in human seminal plasma. This seminal plasma TPA shows immunological similarity with TPA isolated from a pool of carcinoma tumors. TPA is taken up by live spermatozoa and it cannot be easily washed out.

Prostatic acid phosphatase (PAP) - a specific marker of prostatic secretion - has been analyzed by radioimmunoassay in samples of urine voided before and after massage of the prostate. In all patients there was an increase in urine PAP concentration after massage irrespective of the occurrence of expressed prostatic secretion. The mean PAP values increased from 4.

Analyses of split ejaculates and urine voided before and after prostatic massage have been used to evaluate the origin of beta2-microglobulin (b2m) and carcinoembryonic antigen (CEA) in human semen. CEA and b2m were present in rather high concentrations in all the fractions of the split ejaculates. The urine voided after massage of the prostate also contained increased levels of CEA and beta2-microglobulin.

Using immunonephelometry, we measured albumin, transferrin, alpha 1-antitrypsin, orosomucoid, hemopexin, IgG, IgA, and secretory IgA in seminal plasma of men who were attending a fertility clinic. Seminal plasma, obtained by centrifugation of semen, is a turbid liquid producing high blank values that were not diminished by ultracentrifugation, filtration, or treatment with protamine, dextran sulfate, or various lipidophilic gels. Pretreatment of seminal plasma with polyethylene glycol 6000 (final concentration, 40 g/L) considerably decreased the blank values without appreciably changing the relative concentration of the eight proteins studied.

In an earlier study we used various electrophoretic techniques to investigate the proteins in amniotic fluid, including two-dimensional electrophoresis. However, the high proportion of albumin dominated the pattern and tended to distort the pH gradient. Improved methodology, based upon the removal of albumin with Blue Sepharose CL6B and the silver-staining technique, has been used in the present work.
