Purpose: To investigate the roles of adherence and matrix metalloproteinases (MMPs) in growth patterns of major fungal pathogens in cornea.

Methods: Ninety-six eyes in 96 rabbits were equally divided into four groups receiving inoculation of fungal conidia of Aspergillus fumigatus, Candida albicans, Fusarium solani, and Penicillium citreo-viride, respectively, to induce fungal keratitis. Corneas in each group were obtained at 2, 8, 16 hr, and 1, 2, 3, 5, and 8 days after inoculation and were subjected to scanning electron microscopy, histopathological examination, and gelatin zymography.

Objective: To evaluate the surgical technique and outcome of pars plana capsulotomy and vitrectomy with infusion through the limbus to remove the posterior capsule opacification (PCO) in children with pseudophakic eyes.

Methods: This technique was performed in 51 cases (57 eyes) of complicated PCO with pseudophakic eyes, which was almost impossible to remove through the Nd:YAG capsulotomy. Pre- and post-operative visual acuity, intraocular pressure, density of cornea endothelium and complications during and after the operation were observed.

Objectives: To follow-up on the changes in lung function and lung radiographic pictures of severe acute respiratory syndrome (SARS) patients discharged from Xiaotangshan Hospital in Beijing (by regularly receiving examination), and to analyze retrospectively the treatment strategy in these patients.

Methods: Surviving SARS patients were seen at least twice within 3 months after discharge and underwent SARS-associated coronavirus (SARS-CoV) IgG antibody testing, pulmonary function testing, and chest radiography and/or high-resolution CT (HRCT) examinations at Chinese PLA General Hospital. The treatments received at Xiaotangshan Hospital were analyzed retrospectively and were correlated to later status.

Objective: To study the clinical results of combined penetrating keratoplasty with keratolimbal allograft transplantation in the treatment of severe corneal burns.

Methods: The present study consisted of 35 eyes (34 patients) with full thickness corneal opacities and extensive corneal conjunctivalization after severe corneal burns. The duration between the injury and the time of presentation ranged from four months to 23 years.

Objective: To study the mechanism and the features of corneal allograft rejection using a model of CD4 and CD8 knock-out mice.

Methods: The mice were divided into three groups with 20 mice in each group. CD4 knock-out mice, CD8 knock-out mice and C57BL/6 mice were used as recipients and BALB/c mice as corneal graft donors.

Objective: To observe refractive change and axial growth in children with bilateral congenital cataract after intraocular lens (IOL) implantation.

Methods: 38 patients (76 eyes) with congenital cataract, who undergone cataract extraction, posterior continuous curvilinear capsulorhexis, anterior vitrectomy and primary IOL implantation in the capsular bag, were included. Patients were divided into four groups based on their age at surgery: 2 - 3 years (group A), 4 - 5 years (group B), 6 - 7 years (group C) and 8 - 12 years (group D).

Objective: To investigate the reasons why patients suffering hypermature or mature cataract in the urban Qingdao city do not undergo cataract surgery in time.

Methods: 104 inpatients with mature or hypermature age-related cataract were interviewed with a questionnaire concerning medical, economic, social and psychological factors.

Results: The factors related with the surgery delay were medical factor 44.

Objective: To investigate the effects of adenovirus-mediated transfer of antisense c-myc gene on proliferation and survival of human lens epithelial cell.

Methods: Immortalized human lens epithelial cell line (HLE-B3) was infected by replication-deficient adenovirus of antisense c-myc gene (Ad-AS-myc). The expression of c-myc mRNA and protein was detected by RT-PCR and Western blotting respectively.

Purpose: To investigate the effects of adenovirus-mediated transfer of antisense c-myc construct on human lens epithelial B-3 (HLE B-3) cell proliferation, apoptosis and cell cycle.

Methods: HLE B-3 cell cultures were transduced with replication-defective adenovirus bearing either a nuclear-targeted beta-galactosidase (Ad-lacZ) or an antisense c-myc construct (Ad-AS-myc). The presence of beta-galactosidase activity in the transduced cultures was detected by immunohistochemical X-Gal staining, while c-myc mRNA and protein expression levels were evaluated by RT-PCR and Western blot analysis.

Objective: The intent of this study was to examine the recovery of individuals who had been hospitalized for severe acute respiratory syndrome (SARS) in the year following their discharge from the hospital. Parameters studied included serum levels of SARS coronavirus (SARS-CoV) IgG antibody, tests of lung function, and imaging data to evaluate changes in lung fibrosis. In addition, we explored the incidence of femoral head necrosis in some of the individuals recovering from SARS.
