A copper-catalyzed novel synthesis of symmetric diarylamines was achieved from aryl boronic acids and NaNO. This protocol employs aryl boronic acids as the commercially available arylation reagents and sodium nitrite (NaNO) as the cheap, stable, and solid amino source. Under a simple ligand- and base-free copper catalytic system (CuCl as the sole catalyst), a wide range of symmetric diarylamines could be obtained in moderate to good yields.

Article Synopsis
  • Cross-coupling reactions involving arenes with multiple coupling sites face challenges due to chemoselectivity, but orthogonal cross-couplings can provide practical solutions for sequential functionalization.
  • This study demonstrates a Suzuki-Miyaura coupling of triazenyl-substituted aryl bromides using a palladium catalyst under basic conditions, resulting in polyfunctionalized aryl triazenes.
  • The resulting compounds can undergo further Suzuki-Miyaura couplings in acidic conditions, enabling the synthesis of diverse biaryls and teraryls using the same type of nucleophilic reagents.
