Effect of heel elevation on breakover phase in horses with laminitis.

Background: In a laminitic horse, the maximal loading of the toe region occurs during the breakover phase. To date, no kinetic data demonstrates the effect of supportive orthopaedic therapy in horses with laminitis on breakover phase. Thus, the purpose of this study was to examine the effect of heel elevation on the breakover phase.

Hoof kinetic patterns differ between sound and laminitic horses.

Background: No kinetic data on hoof loading in laminitic horses are available, despite their importance for optimising supportive shoeing therapies.

Objectives: To quantify the load distribution pattern in laminitic and sound horses.

Correlation between capillary oxygen saturation and small intestinal wall thickness in the equine colic patient.

The surgical evaluation of haemorrhagic infarcted intestine and the decision for or against bowel resection require a lot of experience and are subjective. The aim of this prospective, clinical study was to examine the correlation between oxygen saturation and small intestinal wall (IW) thickness, using two objective methods. In 22 colicky horses, the blood flow, oxygen saturation and relative amount of haemoglobin were measured intraoperatively via laser Doppler and white light spectroscopy (O2C, oxygen to see, LEA Medizintechnik) at six measuring points (MPs) in small and large intestines.

Identification of gonadal tissue in cryptorchid stallion can be improved by molecular biological analysis - a case report.

Surgically removed testicular tissue in cryptorchid stallions is sometimes difficult to identify because of morphological and histological malformation. Therefore, a sure method to characterise the removed tissue is required. A 2-year-old Haflinger stallion was castrated after diagnosis of cryptorchidism to remove the left intra-abdomnial testis.

Surgical treatment of uterine torsion using a ventral midline laparotomy in 19 mares.

Objective: To report on the outcome of surgical treatment of uterine torsion in preterm mares.

Design: Retrospective case series of pregnant mares with uterine torsion presented to the Clinic for Obstetrics, Gynaecology and Andrology of Large and Small Animals.

Methods: Hospital records of all pregnant mares that underwent ventral midline laparotomy for uterine torsion between 1998 and 2004 were reviewed.

Expression of histone 1 (H1) and testis-specific histone 1 (H1t) genes during stallion spermatogenesis.

In eukaryotic cells, the major protein constituents of the chromatin are histones, which can be divided into five classes, identified as H1, H2A, H2B, H3 and H4. During normal spermatogenesis, a testis-specific H1t is expressed in primary spermatocytes and believed to facilitate histone to protamine exchanges during spermiogenesis. In equine testes we detected the H1 protein at 22kDa by western blot analysis while H1t was detected at 29kDa.

Isolation and characterization of bone marrow-derived equine mesenchymal stem cells.

Objective: To isolate and characterize bone marrow-derived equine mesenchymal stem cells (MSCs) for possible future therapeutic applications in horses.

Sample Population: Equine MSCs were isolated from bone marrow aspirates obtained from the sternum of 30 donor horses.

Procedures: Cells were cultured in medium (alpha-minimum essential medium) with a fetal calf serum content of 20%.

Repair of extensive articular cartilage defects in horses by autologous chondrocyte transplantation.

Damaged adult articular cartilage has very limited capacity to heal. Autologous chondrocyte transplantation (ACT) has been used clinically and studied in experimental animals in an attempt to provide biologically based cartilage regeneration. This study evaluated cartilage repair following ACT in a large animal model over a period of 2 years.

[Diagnostic validity of thermography of lameness in horses].

Thirty-six lameness free horses and 119 horses with lameness of the distal forelimb including the carpus were evaluated through thermography. Examination was done with an infrared thermography camera "Thermovision 470" and a specially developed analyzing software program. Temperature differences between corresponding regions of the left and right forelimb were determined and scrutinized statistically between various lameness groups.

[Animal experiment research on the application of a human bone collagen substance].

The possibility of the application demineralised human cortical substance with a particle size of 315 micron was investigated on the filling of artificial defects at the tibial diaphysis in rabbit. A clear induction of the bone healing was observed histologically on the transplant side already after 4 weeks and the absence of a periosseous callus formation radiologically.

[Quantitative-morphological studies of the heart of MINI-LEWE minature swine. 2: Atrioventricular and semilunar valves].

Reference is made to the possible use of cardiac valves of animal origin as heteroplastic material in cardiac valve surgery. In that context, quantitative studies were conducted into all four cardiac valves. The data measured from clinically intact animals exhibited wide scatter.

Body dimensions, carcass weight, as well as absolute and relative heart weight of 29 Berlin miniature pigs were assessed and statistically evaluated. The correlations between all variables were checked. Significant correlation coefficients were established between absolute heart weight and live or carcass weight as well as between live and carcass weight.
