Euthanasia of dogs and cats by veterinarians in New Zealand: protocols, procedures and experiences.

Aims: To collect data on protocols used by New Zealand veterinarians to perform euthanasia of dogs and cats, and to explore opinions towards the training they received in euthanasia during veterinary school.

Methods: A cross-sectional survey was administered to all veterinarians registered with the Veterinary Council of New Zealand. The survey asked respondents about their practices' policies for euthanasia; protocols for performing euthanasia of dogs and cats; opinions towards euthanasia training received in veterinary school; and subsequent experiences with euthanasia in practice.

The management of patients on direct oral anticoagulants (DOACs) who require emergent cardiac surgery is slowly evolving. The introduction of andexanet alfa, a novel antidote for apixaban and rivaroxaban, added a specific reversal agent to our armamentarium, but its safety and efficacy are still being investigated. We report 2 patients on DOAC treatment who required emergency cardiac surgery.

Identification of potential welfare and survival indicators for stranded cetaceans through international, interdisciplinary expert opinion.

Management of live cetacean strandings generally focuses on refloating animals, yet there is a lack of scientific data to inform decision-making. Valid indicators that are practical to measure are needed to assess welfare status and survival likelihood for stranded cetaceans. The Delphi method was applied to gather international and interdisciplinary expert opinion to provide face validity to potential indicators of stranded cetacean welfare and survival likelihood.

Sleep Health Education to Promote Public Health: Attitudes and Desired Learning Goals among Social Work Students.

Social workers are often front line behavioral health providers for underserved populations, many of whom experience sleep disturbances. Inadequate sleep presents a public health challenge and is associated with many adverse physical health and mental health consequences. Social workers are uniquely positioned to promote sleep health among individuals experiencing health inequities.

Call to action: Prioritizing sleep health among US children and youth residing in alternative care settings.

Sleep health is a critical but under-recognized area of concern for the more than 650,000 children served by the US child welfare system each year. While sleep is vital to optimal child health and development, it is likely harmed by the multiple adversities and traumas experienced among children and youth residing in alternative care settings (ie, kinship care, nonrelative foster care, group homes). Children residing in alternative care settings have experienced, at a minimum, the trauma of removal from a biological parent's care and would benefit from holistic, comprehensive care approaches inclusive of sleep health.

Veterinarians are animal health experts. More recently, they have been conferred a leading role as experts in animal welfare. This expectation of veterinarians as welfare experts appears to stem from their training in veterinary medicine as well as professional contributions to welfare-relevant policy and law.

This study set out to explore how euthanasia decision-making for animals was taught to students in eight Australasian veterinary schools. A questionnaire-style interview guide was used by a representative at each university to interview educators. Educators were interviewed about their teaching of euthanasia decision-making for four categories of animals: livestock, equine, companion and avian/wildlife.

Throughout its 25-year history, the Five Domains Model for animal welfare assessment has been regularly updated to include at each stage the latest authenticated developments in animal welfare science thinking. The domains of the most up-to-date Model described here are: 1 Nutrition, 2 Physical Environment, 3 Health, 4 Behavioural Interactions and 5 Mental State. The first four domains focus attention on factors that give rise to specific negative or positive subjective experiences (affects), which contribute to the animal's mental state, as evaluated in Domain 5.

A Tailored Cognitive-Behavioural Intervention Produces Comparable Reductions in Regimen-Related Distress in Adults With Type 2 Diabetes Regardless of Insulin Use: 12-Month Outcomes From the COMRADE Trial.

Objectives: Our aim in this study was to determine whether a cognitive-behavioural therapy plus small changes lifestyle intervention can produce comparable improvements in insulin users vs patients not using insulin with uncontrolled type 2 diabetes (T2D) and comorbid depressive or regimen-related distress (RRD) symptoms.

Methods: This study is a secondary analysis of Collaborative Care Management for Distress and Depression in Rural Diabetes Study, a randomized, controlled trial of a 16-session, severity-tailored cognitive-behavioural therapy plus small changes lifestyle intervention compared with usual care. Outcomes included glycated hemoglobin (A1C), regimen-related distress, depression, medication adherence and diabetes self-care.

Background: With the passage of the Families First Prevention Act, kinship navigator programs have growing support as an intervention to connect kinship families to needed resources. Growing evidence has helped to showcase the outcomes, but no study has shared follow up outcomes past twelve months.

To describe the variation in surgical techniques used by veterinarians to perform routine dog and cat spays in first-opinion veterinary practice in New Zealand, and how these techniques differed with the number of years since the veterinarian graduated. A cross-sectional survey of veterinarians registered to practice in New Zealand was conducted online between 1 April and 30 May 2018. Respondents were asked their year of graduation and about the procedures, they would use to perform a routine spay of a healthy, 5 kg, young adult, female domestic shorthair cat, and a healthy, 20 kg, young adult, female mixed-breed dog.

Guidelines for Implementing a Low-Cost Volunteer Desexing Skills Training Program for Veterinary and Veterinary Technology Students.

Although desexing surgeries are considered a core clinical skill for small animal veterinary practice, it can be challenging for veterinary schools to provide students with adequate training opportunities in the traditional curriculum. At the Massey University School of Veterinary Science, we recently established an innovative extracurricular volunteer program designed to have students teaching other students how to perform different elements of desexing procedures as they progress through their degree. This program includes administrative and assistant roles for first-year students (responsible for client communication, patient restraint, and medical record keeping), physical exam and recovery roles for second-year students (responsible for assessing patient fitness for surgery, drawing up anesthetic drugs, and monitoring patients in recovery), anesthesia and neuter surgeon roles for third-year students (responsible for inducing, preparing, and monitoring spay patients and performing cat neuter surgeries), and spay surgeon roles for fourth- and fifth-year students (responsible for performing cat spay surgeries, discharging patients, and following up with clients to monitor recovery).

The County-Wide Dissemination of Triple P Parenting Program: An Implementation Study.

Background: The Triple P Parenting system (Triple P) is an evidence-based parenting intervention designed to increase parental competence and decrease child behavioral problems.

Objectives: To describe the county-wide implementation and coordination of Triple P at the community level and the evaluation conducted by the local evaluation team to (1) assess community awareness, (2) determine program reach, and (3) describe parent and child participants.
