Article Synopsis
  • Arthrocentesis is a key procedure for diagnosing and treating lameness in horses, but veterinary students often lack adequate training on live animals due to limited practice opportunities.
  • A study evaluated the impact of practicing arthrocentesis on an equine model before performing it on a live donkey, measuring students' stress levels and anxiety throughout the process.
  • Results showed no significant difference in performance or stress reduction between the model-trained and control groups, indicating that a single practice session may not effectively enhance students' skills or alleviate anxiety when performing arthrocentesis on live animals.

Article Synopsis
  • Venous thromboembolism (VTE) is a serious complication that can occur after major trauma, but there is a lack of strong evidence to predict and prevent it in these patients, leading to inconsistent care practices.
  • A systematic review of 22 studies found a wide range of VTE rates among major trauma patients, with varying risk factors like surgical procedures, delays in preventative care, and specific injuries linked to DVT and PE.
  • Key findings suggest that age, operative procedures, and types of injuries significantly influence the occurrence of VTE, indicating a need for standardized guidelines to better manage prevention in trauma patients.

Climate change is an urgent threat to perinatal and infant health, with the greatest effects of climate change exposures being felt disproportionately by global majority communities who have been most harmed by systems of oppression. Human milk feeding is one recognized solution to bolster climate resilience. Yet, policies and practices to support human milk as a climate solution are inconsistent and under-prioritized, which is unsurprising given the lack of alignment between human history and current cultural context with regard to lactation and human milk access.

Both metalloporphyrins and heterometallic {CrNi} rings are of significant research interest due to their proposed roles in quantum information processing devices. In this study, we present a series of complexes in which [CrNiF(Etglu)(OCBu)] (-EtgluH = -ethyl-dglucamine) heterometallic rings are coordinated to metalloporphyrin linkers: the symmetric [M(TPyP)] for M = Cu, VO, and HTPyP = 5,10,15,20-tetra(4-pyridyl)porphyrin; and the asymmetric [{VO}(TrPPyP)] for H(TrPPyP) = 5,10,15-(triphenyl)-20-(4-pyridyl)porphyrin. The magnetic interactions present in these complexes are unraveled using the continuous wave (CW) electron paramagnetic resonance (EPR) technique.

Aims: Addressing fuel poverty is a critical public health issue given its recent rise in prevalence across Europe. Although previous research identifies national risk markers of fuel poverty, evidence is lacking on whether these are consistent across local geographies, and the equity of local interventions. In the UK's current economic climate, it is more crucial than ever that services benefit households in greatest need.

The extended storage of feed ingredients has been suggested as a method to mitigate the risk of pathogen transmission through contaminated ingredients. To validate the approach of extended storage of complete swine feed for the inactivation of swine viruses, an experiment was conducted wherein swine feed was inoculated with 10 mL of 1 × 10 TCID/mL of porcine reproductive and respiratory syndrome virus (PRRSV), porcine epidemic diarrhea virus (PEDV), and Senecavirus A (SVA) and stored for 58 d at 23.9 °C.

All epidemiological studies on pregnancy fall risk to date have relied on postpartum recall. This study investigated the accuracy of postpartum recall of falls that were reported during pregnancy, including assessment of fall efficacy as a possible reason for recall inaccuracy. Twenty participants reported fall experiences weekly during pregnancy, but one participant was excluded as an outlier.

Quantum information processing promises to revolutionise computing; quantum algorithms have been discovered that address common tasks significantly more efficiently than their classical counterparts. For a physical system to be a viable quantum computer it must be possible to initialise its quantum state, to realise a set of universal quantum logic gates, including at least one multi-qubit gate, and to make measurements of qubit states. Molecular Electron Spin Qubits (MESQs) have been proposed to fulfil these criteria, as their bottom-up synthesis should facilitate tuning properties as desired and the reproducible production of multi-MESQ structures.

We report the synthesis and structural characterization of a series of heterometallic rings templated alkylammonium or imidazolium cations. The template and preference of each metal's coordination geometry can control the structure of heterometallic compounds, leading to octa-, nona-, deca-, dodeca-, and tetradeca-metallic rings. The compounds were characterized by single-crystal X-ray diffraction, elemental analysis, magnetometry, and EPR measurements.

Literature on infant emotion is dominated by research conducted in Western, industrialized societies where early socialization is characterized by face-to-face, vocal communication with caregivers. There is a dearth of knowledge of infant emotion in the context of social interaction outside of the visual and vocal modalities. In a three-population cross-cultural comparison, we used the still-face task to measure variation in behavior among infants from proximal care (practicing high levels of physical contact) communities in Bolivia and distal care (emphasizing vocal and visual interaction) communities in the U.
