Evaluating an inquiry-based learning program.

Inquiry-based learning (IBL) is a promising educational framework that is understudied in graduate medical education. To determine participant satisfaction and engagement with phases of an IBL postgraduate education program, a mixed-methods study collected data via survey statements and open-ended responses. The authors included participants attending an intensive care medicine (ICM) IBL program from May to November 2020.

Pediatric basic course goes virtual: transition from face to face to hybrid learning in pediatric critical care.

Background: To explore the impact of the transition from a traditional face-to-face course delivering essential contents in pediatric critical care to a hybrid format consisting of an online pre-course self-directed learning, an online facilitated discussion, and a face-to-face edition.

Methods: Attendees and faculty were surveyed after the face-to-face course and the hybrid version to evaluate the effectiveness and satisfaction of participants with the course.

Results: Fifty-seven students attended multiple formats of the Pediatric Basic Course between January 2020 and October 2021 in Udine, Italy.

Optimization of cryopreservation protocols for cooled-transported stallion semen.

Freezing cooled-transported semen allows veterinarians and breeders to collect and process the semen of stallions on farm, and then ship the semen to a semen freezing center. There, however, is a lack of standardization of shipping and freezing protocols. The objectives were to optimize and simplify protocols to freeze cooled-shipped semen.

The Australian and New Zealand Clinician Educator Network (ANZCEN) Unconference: What's an unconference and how can it develop communities of practice?

The Australian and New Zealand Clinician Educator Network (ANZCEN) is a collaborative interprofessional group developed to promote the development of education in critical care healthcare practice. In November 2018, 45 critical care practitioners met at the first ANZCEN Unconference. In an unconference, the participants drive the agenda, and learning occurs from the active process of engaging in a community of practice.

Climate-driven declines in arthropod abundance restructure a rainforest food web.

A number of studies indicate that tropical arthropods should be particularly vulnerable to climate warming. If these predictions are realized, climate warming may have a more profound impact on the functioning and diversity of tropical forests than currently anticipated. Although arthropods comprise over two-thirds of terrestrial species, information on their abundance and extinction rates in tropical habitats is severely limited.

Population pharmacokinetics of phenytoin in critically ill children.

The objective was to study the population pharmacokinetics of bound and unbound phenytoin in critically ill children, including influences on the protein binding profile. A population pharmacokinetic approach was used to analyze paired protein-unbound and total phenytoin plasma concentrations (n = 146 each) from 32 critically ill children (0.08-17 years of age) who were admitted to a pediatric hospital, primarily intensive care unit.

Mitotic kinesin CENP-E promotes microtubule plus-end elongation.

Centromere protein CENP-E is a dimeric kinesin (Kinesin-7 family) with critical roles in mitosis, including establishment of microtubule (MT)-chromosome linkage and movement of mono-oriented chromosomes on kinetochore microtubules for proper alignment at metaphase [1-9]. We performed studies to test the hypothesis that CENP-E promotes MT elongation at the MT plus ends. A human CENP-E construct was engineered, expressed, and purified, and it yielded the CENP-E-6His dimeric motor protein.

Blue-ringed octopus (Hapalochlaena sp.) envenomation of a 4-year-old boy: a case report.

Introduction: The blue-ringed octopus (Hapalochlaena sp.) is a small animal, which can inject a toxin that produces a respiratory arrest within minutes. This envenomation is a rare occurrence with very few reported outcomes in children.

Increased learning observed in redesigned introductory biology course that employed web-enhanced, interactive pedagogy.

Our Introduction to Biology course (BIOL 1010) changed in 2004 from a standard instructor-centered, lecture-homework-exam format to a student-centered format that used Web-enhanced, interactive pedagogy. To measure and compare conceptual learning gains in the traditional course in fall 2003 with a section of the interactive course in fall 2004, we created concept inventories for both evolution and ecology. Both classes were taught by the same instructor who had taught BIOL 1010 since 1976, and each had a similar student composition with comparable biological knowledge.

Preliminary study of shunt related death in paediatric patients.

Hydrocephalus is a condition commonly encountered in paediatric and adult neurosurgery and cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) shunting remains the treatment of choice for many cases. Despite improvements in shunt technology and technique, morbidity and mortality remain. The incidence of early shunt obstruction is high with later failures seen less frequently.

Developing a managed care-pharmaceutical research partnership.

Increasingly, MCOs ask pharmaceutical companies for evidence of a new product's cost effectiveness before adding it to the formulary. This article examines a research partnership between a pharmaceutical company and 14 MCOs to assess the cost effectiveness of a new medication for osteoarthritis. The research partnership, a study protocol, and research activities are discussed.

Very early noninvasive detection of acute experimental nonreperfused myocardial infarction with 99mTc-labeled glucarate.

Background: 99mTc glucarate has recently been reported to be an infarct-avid agent. The feasibility of imaging with 99mTc glucarate was evaluated for the early diagnosis of nonreperfused and reperfused myocardial infarction and compared with localization of simultaneously administered 111In anti-myosin.

Dilemmas in the treatment of chronic pain.

Chronic pain affects millions of people and results in activity limitations and psychologic and social problems. Even with the armamentarium of analgesics currently available, patients continue to receive inadequate relief of their painful conditions. One of the primary factors that limits appropriate utilization of analgesics is the spectrum of adverse effects that often results following acute and chronic use.

Echocardiographic evaluation of patients with acute rheumatic fever and rheumatic carditis.

Background: Cardiac involvement is the most important component of acute rheumatic fever. The role of echocardiography in the evaluation of rheumatic carditis has not been adequately defined. We used echocardiography in a large sample of patients with acute rheumatic fever to describe morphological abnormalities associated with rheumatic carditis and to assess its role in the diagnosis of rheumatic carditis.

Noninvasive localization of experimental atherosclerotic lesions with mouse/human chimeric Z2D3 F(ab')2 specific for the proliferating smooth muscle cells of human atheroma. Imaging with conventional and negative charge-modified antibody fragments.

Background: A murine monoclonal antibody designated Z2D3 (IgM) generated against homogenized human atherosclerotic plaques was demonstrated to be highly specific for proliferating smooth muscle cells. The primary clone subsequently was genetically engineered to provide a mouse/human chimeric antibody with human IgG1 constant region expressed in a rat myeloma cell line. The resulting Z2D3-73.

Efficacy of nabumetone versus diclofenac, naproxen, ibuprofen, and piroxicam in osteoarthritis and rheumatoid arthritis.

The efficacy of nabumetone was compared with that of diclofenac, naproxen, ibuprofen, and piroxicam in patients with osteoarthritis (OA) or rheumatoid arthritis (RA) in a randomized, controlled, open-label, multicenter trial. Patients > or = 18 years with clinical and radiographic evidence of OA or RA (functional class I, II, or III), who provided written informed consent, were eligible. To mimic real-life therapy, no washout phase preceded randomization.

Are we using the right irrigation system?

The relationships between bladder pressure and irrigant fluid flow rate were tested using two commonly used supply systems and a 27 FG Storz resectoscope. Simple and inexpensive modifications would enable transurethral prostatectomy to be carried out with reduced intravesical pressure and less risk of fluid absorption. With a continuous suction resectoscope, the modified system allows accurate balance of the inflow and outflow of the irrigant fluid.

Bifoveal vision in anolis lizards.

The retinas of 14 ecologically diverse species of Anolis lizards have been examined neuroanatomically. Both central and temporal foveas were observed in each eye of all species: however, the two foveas differed with regard to a number of structural and morphological characteristics. All central foveas were deep and convexiclivate, while temporal foveas were shallower and more variable both in shape and retinal location across species.

Resource variation and the structure of British bird communities.

Data on the foraging microhabitats of British birds are reanalyzed with the aim of understanding how fluctuations in resource abundance affect niche relationships and community structure. At Marley Wood, overlap in the foraging sites of resident bird species increased during the late spring and summer and decreased during the fall and winter. Among bird species coexisting in the pine forests at Thetford Chase, spatial overlap and spatial niche widths were positively correlated with food abundance over a 4-year period.
