Monoclonal immunoglobulin light chain (LC) crystalline inclusions within podocytes are rare, poorly characterized entities. To provide more insight, we now present the first clinicopathologic series of LC crystalline podocytopathy (LCCP) encompassing 25 patients (68% male, median age 56 years). Most (80%) patients presented with proteinuria and chronic kidney disease, with nephrotic syndrome in 28%.

Case definition and overlap with other severe cutaneous adverse reactions (SCAR) are debated.
Objectives: To analyse the spectrum of signs and symptoms of DRESS and distribution of causative drugs in a large multicentre series.
Background: Generalized bullous fixed drug eruption (GBFDE) is a rare cutaneous adverse reaction to drugs, and may resemble Stevens-Johnson syndrome (SJS) or toxic epidermal necrolysis (TEN), but is usually considered less severe.
Objectives: To compare the severity and mortality rate in cases of GBFDE and control cases of SJS or TEN of similar extent of skin detachment.
Methods: This was a case-control analysis of 58 patients with GBFDE matched by age and extent of skin detachment to 170 control patients with a validated diagnosis of SJS or SJS/TEN overlap.
Stevens-Johnson syndrome and toxic epidermal necrolysis are severe cutaneous adverse reactions that are of major concern because of high mortality rates. On the basis of data collected in the RegiSCAR study, the aim was to assess risk factors (including modalities of patient management) for mortality, regardless of the cause, up to 1 year after the reaction. Within this cohort, the mortality rate was 23% (95% confidence interval (CI) 19-27%) at 6 weeks and 34% (95% CI 30-39%) at 1 year.

Objectives: To investigate genetic association at a genome-wide level on a large sample of SJS/TEN patients.
Methods: We performed a genome wide association study on a sample of 424 European cases and 1,881 controls selected from a Reference Control Panel.
The purpose of this study was to evaluate the severity-of-illness score called SCORTEN with respect to its predictive ability and by using data obtained in the RegiSCAR study, the most comprehensive European registry of patients with Stevens-Johnson syndrome (SJS) and toxic epidermal necrolysis (TEN). The cutaneous symptoms began at hands, feet, and in the mouth and developed during the course of 10 days to cover 75% of her TBSA, whereas total epidermolysis was present on more than 40% of her TBSA. Because of progressive swelling and bleeding of the oral mucosa, tracheal intubation was necessary to secure the airway of the patient.

We describe a patient originally suffering from a depressive syndrome who developed Stevens-Johnson syndrome after 12 days of treatment with lamotrigine. The clinical symptoms and the inflammation parameters neopterin and C-reactive protein were documented. Neopterin values showed a good correlation with the course of the disease, which, to the best of our knowledge, has not been reported previously.

The objective of the present study was to determine the prevalence of nodal metastases, lymphatic vascular invasion, and multifocal neoplasia in patients with pT1 esophageal carcinoma who underwent esophagectomy without preoperative therapy and assess their potential implication for ET.
Methods: We retrospectively reviewed the records of all patients who underwent esophagectomy without preoperative therapy for pT1 esophageal cancer.
Background: The ability to accurately predict clinical and pathological response and survival in patients undergoing preoperative chemotherapy may have a significant impact on treatment strategy for esophageal carcinoma. This study assessed the predictive accuracy of clinical response (CR) and positron emission tomography (PET) scanning in determining pathological downstaging and disease free survival (DFS) after chemotherapy.
Methods: This is a retrospective review of patients who underwent chemotherapy prior to complete surgical resection for esophageal carcinoma between 1999 and 2005.
Background: In patients deemed to have clinical stage I for non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC) after computerized tomography (CT) and positron emission tomography (PET) scans, the utility of mediastinoscopy to detect occult mediastinal metastases is unclear. The goal of this study was to analyze the risk factors for occult mediastinal metastases in this subset of patients.
Methods: We conducted a retrospective review during a 7-year period to identify patients with potentially operable clinical stage I NSCLC screened by CT and PET scans.
