A Periodontal Perspective on the Successful Treatment of Recurrent Benign Gingival Lesions Affecting the Anterior Dentition: Two Case Reports.

Recurrent benign gingival lesions occurring in the anterior dentition are clinical dilemmas. While complete removal of such lesions is required to prevent recurrence, this can result in a poor esthetic outcome. Relative to this conundrum, this report discusses the diagnosis, psychologic management, and clinical treatment of two patients with recurring lesions on the facial gingiva of the mandibular and maxillary incisors, respectively.

Assessment of Digital Workflow in Predoctoral Education and Patient Care in North American Dental Schools.

Technology has revolutionized the field of dentistry, and digital workflow has become commonplace in everyday dental practices. However, are future practitioners prepared to enter into an increasingly digitized world? The aim of this study was to determine the extent to which digital modalities were being taught to predoctoral dental students and used for patient care in dental schools throughout North America. A 35-question survey was sent in February 2019 to all 76 dental schools in the U.

Dipyridamole-loaded 3D-printed bioceramic scaffolds stimulate pediatric bone regeneration in vivo without disruption of craniofacial growth through facial maturity.

This study investigates a comprehensive model of bone regeneration capacity of dypiridamole-loaded 3D-printed bioceramic (DIPY-3DPBC) scaffolds composed of 100% beta-tricalcium phosphate (β -TCP) in an immature rabbit model through the time of facial maturity. The efficacy of this construct was compared to autologous bone graft, the clinical standard of care in pediatric craniofacial reconstruction, with attention paid to volume of regenerated bone by 3D reconstruction, histologic and mechanical properties of regenerated bone, and long-term safety regarding potential craniofacial growth restriction. Additionally, long-term degradation of scaffold constructs was evaluated.

Slug and Snail have differential effects in directing colonic epithelial wound healing and partially mediate the restitutive effects of butyrate.

Restitution of wounds in colonic epithelium is essential in the maintenance of health. Microbial products, such as the short-chain fatty acid butyrate, can have positive effects on wound healing. We used an in vitro model of T84 colonic epithelial cells to determine if the Snail genes Slug () and Snail (), implemented in keratinocyte monolayer healing, are involved in butyrate-enhanced colonic epithelial wound healing.

In-House Manufacture of Sterilizable, Scaled, Patient-Specific 3D-Printed Models for Rhinoplasty.

Background: Rhinoplasty relies on clear patient communication and precise execution of a three-dimensional (3D) plan to achieve optimal results. As 3D imaging and printing continue to grow in popularity within the medical field, rhinoplasty surgeons have begun to leverage these resources as an aid to preoperative planning, patient communication, and the technical performance of this challenging operation.

Objectives: Utilizing departmentally available resources and open-access 3D imaging platforms, we have developed an affordable, reproducible protocol for rapid in-house virtual surgical planning (VSP) and subsequent manufacture of 3D-printed rhinoplasty models.

The technique for 3D printing patient-specific models for auricular reconstruction.

Purpose: Currently, surgeons approach autogenous microtia repair by creating a two-dimensional (2D) tracing of the unaffected ear to approximate a three-dimensional (3D) construct, a difficult process. To address these shortcomings, this study introduces the fabrication of patient-specific, sterilizable 3D printed auricular model for autogenous auricular reconstruction.

Methods: A high-resolution 3D digital photograph was captured of the patient's unaffected ear and surrounding anatomic structures.

Trends in study methods used in undergraduate medical education research, 1969-2007.

Context: Evidence-based medical education requires rigorous studies appraising educational efficacy.

Objectives: To assess trends over time in methods used to evaluate undergraduate medical education interventions and to identify whether participation of medical education departments or centers is associated with more rigorous methods.

Data Sources: The PubMed, Cochrane Controlled Trials Registry, Campbell Collaboration, and ERIC databases (January 1966-March 2007) were searched using terms equivalent to students, medical and education, medical crossed with all relevant study designs.

Implementation of an aggressive random drug-testing policy in a rural school district: Student attitudes regarding program fairness and effectiveness.

School districts are increasingly initiating random drug-testing (RDT) programs in an effort to curb substance-use rates among students, yet little is known about student attitudes toward RDT and potential obstacles to program acceptance and effectiveness. The authors surveyed 1011 9th through 11th grade students in 2 rural high schools in North Florida regarding the pending implementation of one of the most aggressive RDT programs in the nation. A significant majority of students predicted that RDT would be effective, yet students were more clearly divided in their perceptions of the fairness and the accuracy of testing.

Publication bias in the pulmonary/allergy literature: effect of pharmaceutical company sponsorship.

Background: A publication bias exists towards positive results in studies funded by pharmaceutical companies.

Objectives: To determine whether drug studies in the pulmonary/allergy literature also demonstrate a publication bias towards more favorable results when a pharmaceutical company funds the study.

Methods: We reviewed all original articles published in seven pulmonary and allergy journals between October 2002 and September 2003.

Symptom endorsement differences on the Children's Depression Inventory with children and adolescents on an inpatient unit.

Responses to the Children's Depression Inventory (CDI; Kovacs, 1992), administered during intake, were collected from 521 children and adolescents (aged 7 to 17) at an inpatient crisis stabilization unit. Participants were grouped into 1 of 3 diagnostic groups: solely depressive, solely aggressive, or both depressive and aggressive. Self-report of symptoms for each diagnostic group, age and gender differences, and racial and ethnic differences in symptoms were examined in this study.

Subsenescent telomere lengths in fibroblasts immortalized by limiting amounts of telomerase.

Human fibroblasts expressing the catalytic component of human telomerase (hTERT) have been followed for 250-400 population doublings. As expected, telomerase activity declined in long term culture of stable transfectants. Surprisingly, however, clones with average telomere lengths several kilobases shorter than those of senescent parental cells continued to proliferate.

Pyelonephritis as a cause of pleural effusion.

Although pancreatitis and subphrenic abscess frequently cause pleural effusion, renal disease rarely does so. We report a case of a young patient who presented with pleural effusion due to pyelonephritis and renal outflow obstruction secondary to nephrolithiasis. The effusion and the initial absence of urinary abnormalities resulted in delay in diagnosis and initiation of appropriate therapy.

In-hospital cardiopulmonary resuscitation. Survival in 1 hospital and literature review.

Cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) has been used extensively in the hospital setting since its introduction over 3 decades ago. We reviewed the CPR records at 1 hospital during a 2-year period and the results from 113 published reports of inpatient CPR with a total patient population of 26,095. We compared the survival rates of patients following CPR and the pre-arrest and intra-arrest factors related to survival.

Gadolinium-sensitive, voltage-dependent calcium release channels in the endoplasmic reticulum of a higher plant mechanoreceptor organ.

The lipid bilayer technique was adapted to the functional reconstitution of ion channels from the endoplasmic reticulum of a higher plant. This was obtained at high purity from touch-sensitive tendrils of Bryonia dioica. In this preparation, a calcium-selective strongly rectifying channel is prevailing whose single-channel properties have been characterized.

Nonsequence-specific inhibition of bacterial luminescence by phosphorothioate oligodeoxyribonucleotides.

To evaluate the effect of synthetic DNA oligomers on regulation of bacterial genes in vivo, we tested 63 oligomers of variable length and chemistry for their ability to selectively suppress light production in the bioluminescent marine organism, Vibrio fischeri. Phosphodiester, phosphorothioate, and mixed backbone oligomers were designed to be lux gene targeted or nontargeted (negative) controls. Although significant suppression of luminescence was observed, most notably with the phosphorothioate oligomers, there was no correlation between inhibitory activity and oligomer sequence.

The effect of pars plana vitrectomy and transforming growth factor-beta 2 without epiretinal membrane peeling on full-thickness macular holes.

Purpose: Surgical techniques for the treatment of macular holes generally include removal of the overlying cortical vitreous and/or epiretinal membranes. The authors demonstrate that by using vitrectomy, posterior hyaloid removal, fluid-gas exchange, and transforming growth factor-beta 2 (TGF-beta 2), a growth factor that modulates the wound healing process, epiretinal membrane peeling can be avoided and the surgical procedure thereby simplified without compromising results.

Methods: A total of 24 eyes of 24 patients with stage 2, 3, or 4 full-thickness macular holes were treated.

Stability of blood gases in ice and at room temperature.

Arterial blood samples from 75 patients were analyzed for PO2, PCO2, and pH at 0, 15, and 30 min. After the baseline analysis, 60 samples were kept in ice while 59 samples were left at room temperature. There was a statistically significant increase in the PO2 at 15 min and again at 30 min in both groups.

Regional and systemic CD4 and CD8 subsets in bronchogenic carcinoma.

We studied lung and blood lymphocytes from 12 asymptomatic patients with peripheral bronchogenic carcinoma. Bronchoalveolar lavage was performed in the lung segment with tumor and a contralateral uninvolved lung segment and analyzed separately. After partial removal of macrophages by plastic adherence, cells were labeled with markers for CD4 and CD8 and analyzed by flow cytometric analysis.
