Nonlinear optics plays important roles in the research of fundamental physics and the applications of high-performance optoelectronic devices. The bulk nonlinear optical responses arise from the uniform light absorption in noncentrosymmetric crystals, and hence are usually considered to be the collective phenomena of all atoms. Here we show, in contrast to this common expectation, the nonlinear optical responses in antiferromagnets can be selectively accumulated near the surfaces, representing a skin effect.

The ability to generate Landau levels using a pseudomagnetic field (PMF), also called an artificial gauge field, opens up new pathways for exploring fundamental physics and developing novel applications based on topological protection. In this Letter, we simultaneously realize a PMF and a pseudoelectric field (PEF) on a photonic crystal platform and observe a rainbow effect of the Landau zeroth modes. While a PMF induces a series of discretized Landau levels of photons in a similar way as the quantum Hall effect for electrons, a PEF breaks the degeneracy of the flat band of Landau levels over a broad range.

Protein-ligand interactions are the molecular basis of many important cellular activities, such as gene regulation, cell metabolism, and signal transduction. Protein-ligand binding affinity is a crucial metric of the strength of the interaction between the two, and accurate prediction of its binding affinity is essential for discovering drugs' new uses. So far, although many predictive models based on machine learning and deep learning have been reported, most of the models mainly focus on one-dimensional sequence and two-dimensional structural characteristics of proteins and ligands, but fail to deeply explore the detailed interaction information between proteins and ligand atoms in the binding pocket region of three-dimensional space.

The creation of anisotropic nanoparticles (NPs) by polymerization and/or self-assembly (SA) has significantly promoted the applications of polymer nanomaterials in many fields. However, polymer nanorods are not easily accessible via conventional polymerization or SA. Here we report a one-step route to synthesize single-domain smectic liquid crystalline (LC) nanorods utilizing oriented attachment (OA) that was usually found in the synthesis of inorganic NPs, synchronized with polymerization and SA.

Organic-inorganic hybrid metal halides (OIMHs) with ferroelastic phase transition properties have recently attracted great attention due to their widespread application prospects in the fields of energy storage, sensors, switches, . However, most of the hybrid ferroelastics exhibit phase transition points () far beyond room temperature, which may limit their applications in mechanical switches and energy storage for daily working requirements. Herein, we synthesized a new zinc halide OIMH ferroelastic (,)-[BPHD]ZnBr (BPHD = 1,6-bis(piperidine-1-yl) hexa-2,4-diene diamide), which experiences a 2/1̄ type paraelastic-ferroelastic phase transition at a near-room-temperature of 285 K.

Real-time monitoring of reactive oxygen and nitrogen species (RONS) in skeletal muscle provides crucial insights into the cause-and-effect relationships between physical activity and health benefits. However, the dynamic production of exercise-induced RONS remains poorly explored, due to the lack of sensing tools that can conform to soft skeletal muscle while monitor RONS release during exercise. Here we introduce dual flexible sensors via twisting carbon nanotubes into helical bundles of fibers and subsequent assembling electrochemical sensing components.

The direct CO2 reduction reaction (CO2RR) from simulated flue gas of various CO2 concentrations could minimize extra energy for pre-concentration processes to highly concentrated CO2 as a feed-stock. We investigate the challenges for CO2RR caused by low CO2 concentrations and provide strategies concerning the impact of the chosen electrocatalyst material and the selection of the electrolyte to attain high CO selectivity. We continuously feed CO2 mixed with N2 (the typical dilutant in flue gas) in various ratios to gas diffusion electrodes in a model flow-through electrolyzer.

In this study, we employed classical molecular dynamics (CMD) and first-principles molecular dynamics (FPMD) simulations to investigate the speciation of uranyl in carbonate-rich hydrothermal solutions. The association constants (log) of uranyl carbonate complexes were derived from the potential of mean forces (PMFs) obtained from CMD simulations, and the acid constants (ps) of uranyl aqua ions were calculated using the FPMD-based vertical energy gap method. The results showed that uranyl ions could form stable mono- and bi-carbonate complexes at elevated temperatures and that uranyl aqua ions strongly hydrolyzed in neutral solutions at temperatures exceeding 473 K.

The [5,5]-sigmatropic rearrangement is a less-studied reaction and may be strategically utilized to devise unique synthetic processes. Herein, we document a diboron-enabled [5,5]-sigmatropic rearrangement for practical synthesis of BINAM derivatives. Mechanistically, a concerted activation of azonaphthalenes by diboron creates a unique ten-membered transition state, which subsequently triggers a [5,5]-sigmatropic rearrangement.

In this project, cement-based composites reinforced with slag powder (abbreviated as SP), steel slag powder (abbreviated as SSP), and desulfurization gypsum (abbreviated as FGD) were used as the research objects, and the preparation, mechanical properties, and strengthening mechanism of the composites were systematically studied. A laser particle analyzer (Malvern Instruments Analysis) was used to determine that the particle sizes of the raw SSP, SP, and FGD materials were concentrated between 5 and 40 μm, indicating that they were fine-grained minerals. SSP and SP are highly active alkaline substances.
