Importance: Observational studies have shown associations of birth weight with type 2 diabetes (T2D) and glycemic traits, but it remains unclear whether these associations represent causal associations.
Objective: To test the association of birth weight with T2D and glycemic traits using a mendelian randomization analysis.
Design, Setting, And Participants: This mendelian randomization study used a genetic risk score for birth weight that was constructed with 7 genome-wide significant single-nucleotide polymorphisms.
Cyclooxygenases are known as important regulators of metabolism and immune processes via conversion of C20 fatty acids into various regulatory lipid mediators, and cyclooxygenase activity has been implicated in browning of white adipose tissues. We generated transgenic (TG) C57BL/6 mice expressing the Ptgs2 gene encoding cyclooxygenase-2 (COX-2) in mature adipocytes. TG mice fed a high-fat diet displayed marginally lower weight gain with less hepatic steatosis and a slight improvement in insulin sensitivity, but no difference in glucose tolerance.

The decision to initiate batch medication of intestinal diseases in nursery pigs is typically made by the stock personnel based on clinical assessments of pigs and counting of diarrhoeic faecal pools on the pen floor. The target population of this study was batches of nursery pigs (10-66 days after weaning) where the stock personnel assessed the pigs to be without signs of intestinal disease and therefore did not needed treatment.

Background: General anaesthetics can alter the relationship between regional cerebral glucose metabolism rate (rGMR) and regional cerebral blood flow (rCBF). With the present study, we wanted to assess quantitatively the effects of propofol on rCBF and rGMR in the same healthy volunteers measured with positron emission tomography (PET).
Methods: (15)O-labelled water and (18)F fluorodeoxyglucose were used as PET tracers to determine rCBF and rGMR, respectively, in eight healthy volunteers during the waking state (baseline) and during propofol anaesthesia.
Background: The uncoupling protein 1 (UCP1) is a hallmark of brown adipocytes and pivotal for cold- and diet-induced thermogenesis.
Methodology/principal Findings: Here we report that cyclooxygenase (COX) activity and prostaglandin E(2) (PGE(2)) are crucially involved in induction of UCP1 expression in inguinal white adipocytes, but not in classic interscapular brown adipocytes. Cold-induced expression of UCP1 in inguinal white adipocytes was repressed in COX2 knockout (KO) mice and by administration of the COX inhibitor indomethacin in wild-type mice.

Research Design And Methods: We performed a 4-year prospective, randomized, double-dummy controlled study comparing nisoldipine (20-40 mg once a day) with lisinopril (10-20 mg once a day). The study was double-blinded for the first year and single-blinded thereafter.
The study was designed to investigate the binding of [18F]Fluoromisonidazole ([18F]FMISO) and [18F]Fluoro-2-deoxy-D-glucose ([18F]FDG) in a C3H mouse mammary carcinoma. Non-anaesthetized tumour-bearing animals breathing either normal air or carbogen (to reduce tumour hypoxia) were examined by PET after tracer injection. Tumours were identified by radioactive labelling and methods of defining regions of interest (ROI) in the tumours were investigated.
