Article Synopsis
  • The study aimed to compare the effectiveness of deep brain stimulation (DBS) in the subthalamic nucleus (STN) versus the globus pallidus internus (GPi) for patients with refractory dystonia.
  • Twelve patients participated in a double-blind crossover study, receiving bilateral stimulation from both targets for 6 months each, with outcomes measured using the Burke-Fahn-Marsden Dystonia Rating Scale (BFMDRS) and quality of life questionnaires.
  • Results indicated that STN stimulation led to greater improvements in movement scores than GPi stimulation, and while quality of life improvements were noted for all patients, acceptance of GPi stimulation was lower, with more patients favoring STN stimulation.
