Background: Endometriosis is a chronic, estrogen-dependent, benign condition, affecting 10-15% of women of reproductive age. It is associated with a prevalence of sexual dysfunction that is nearly twice as high as that seen in women with other benign gynecological conditions. Our study aimed to assess the effect of surgical intervention on sexual function, as measured by the FSFI (Female Sexual Function Index) score, in women with endometriosis compared to those with other benign gynecological conditions, both before and after surgery.

Background: Glycyrrhiza glabrata (licorice) is used in traditional medicine and herbal remedies and reduces sore throats consequent to intubation, but whether it is protective for more intense pain after oropharyngeal surgery remains unclear. We thus tested the joint hypothesis that gargling with licorice, which has anti-inflammatory and antioxidant properties, reduces postoperative pain and morphine consumption.

Methods: We enrolled patients having elective oropharyngeal surgery.

Background And Objectives: Distal nerve transfers for muscle reinnervation and restoration of function after upper and lower motor neuron lesions are a well-established surgical approach. The brachialis to anterior interosseous nerve (BrAIN) transfer is performed for prehension reanimation in lower brachial plexus and traumatic cervical spinal cord injuries. The aim of the study is to shed light on the inconsistent results observed in patients who undergo the BrAIN transfer.

In this focused genetic case-control study, we analyzed two functional single-nucleotide variants (SNVs) associated with breast cancer risk (rs2046210, rs9383590) and one risk SNV for an implantation defect and infertility (rs9340799) for their association with endometriosis susceptibility, progression and gene regulation in endometriosis patients. The rs2046210, rs9383590 and rs9340799 SNVs were genotyped in 153 endometriosis patients and 87 control subjects with Caucasian ancestry. We analyzed the association of all SNVs with endometriosis susceptibility in all patients and in subgroups and assessed the concordance between the SNVs.

Background: The fitting of a prosthesis after lower limb amputation is associated with several challenges. Skeletal stump-prosthesis interfaces and selective nerve transfer can partially overcome these but are also associated with new impairments that emphasize the necessity of innovative approaches. The concept of so-called spare part surgery with the use of fillet flaps could play an important role in this respect.

Background: The upper extremity and particularly the hands are crucial for patients in interacting with their environment, therefore amputations or severe damage with loss of hand function significantly impact their quality of life. In cases where biological reconstruction is not feasible or does not lead to sufficient success, bionic reconstruction plays a key role in patient care. Classical myoelectric prostheses are controlled using two signals derived from surface electrodes in the area of the stump muscles.

Selective nerve transfers are used in the setting of upper limb amputation to improve myoelectric prosthesis control. This surgical concept is referred to as targeted muscle reinnervation (TMR) and describes the rerouting of the major nerves of the arm onto the motor branches of the residual limb musculature. Aside from providing additional myosignals for prosthetic control, TMR can treat and prevent neuroma pain and possibly also phantom limb pain.

A major problem in SARS-CoV-2-infected patients is the massive tissue inflammation in certain target organs, including the lungs. Mast cells (MC), basophils (BA), and eosinophils (EO) are key effector cells in inflammatory processes. These cells have recently been implicated in the pathogenesis of SARS-CoV-2 infections.

Continuous precipitation coupled with continuous tangential flow filtration is a cost-effective alternative for the capture of recombinant antibodies from crude cell culture supernatant. The removal of surge tanks between unit operations, by the adoption of tubular reactors, maintains a continuous harvest and mass flow of product with the advantage of a narrow residence time distribution (RTD). We developed a continuous process implementing two orthogonal precipitation methods, CaCl precipitation for removal of host-cell DNA and polyethylene glycol (PEG) for capturing the recombinant antibody, with no influence on the glycosylation profile.

Background: Endometriosis is a chronic, benign, and oestrogen-dependent condition and about 10-15% of all women of reproductive age are affected by endometriosis worldwide. It is not curable and pain is one of the most common symptoms of endometriosis and leads to low quality of life in affected women. To our knowledge, in German-speaking countries, no studies with qualitative methods approaches are available concerning women who suffer from pain caused by endometriosis and possible associated coping strategies.

Distal nerve transfers to restore elbow flexion have become standard of care in brachial plexus reconstruction. The purpose of this report is to draw attention to intractable co-contraction as a rare but significant adverse event of distal nerve transfers. Here we report of treatment of a disabling co-contraction of the brachialis muscle and wrist/finger flexors after median to brachialis fascicular transfer in a 61-year-old male patient.

Negative expectations regarding nerve reconstruction in the elderly prevail in the literature, but little is known about the effectiveness of nerve transfers in patients with brachial plexus injuries aged over 60 years. We present a series of five patients (1 female, 4 male) aged between 60 and 81 years (median 62.0 years) who underwent nerve reconstruction using multiple nerve transfers in brachial plexopathies.

Endometriotic lesions are able to infiltrate surrounding tissue. This is made possible partly by an altered local and systemic immune response that helps achieve neoangiogenesis, cell proliferation and immune escape. Deep-infiltrating endometriosis (DIE) differs from other subtypes through the invasion of its lesions over 5 mm into affected tissue.

The peroneal nerve is one of the most commonly injured nerves of the lower extremity. Nerve grafting has been shown to result in poor functional outcomes. The aim of this study was to evaluate and compare anatomical feasibility as well as axon count of the tibial nerve motor branches and the tibialis anterior motor branch for a direct nerve transfer to reconstruct ankle dorsiflexion.

Estrogen receptor α (ERα), encoded by the gene, is a key prognostic and predictive biomarker firmly established in routine diagnostics and as a therapeutic target of breast cancer, and it has a central function in breast cancer biology. Genetic variants at 6q25.1, containing the gene, were found to be associated with breast cancer susceptibility.

Objective: Until recently, autologous sensory nerve grafting has remained the gold-standard technique in peripheral nerve reconstruction. However, there are several disadvantages to these grafts, such as donor site morbidity, limited availability, and a qualitative mismatch. Building on this shortage, a new concept, the fascicular shift procedure, was proposed and successfully demonstrated nerve regeneration in a rat nerve injury model.

Backround: Endometriosis is one of the most common gynecological illnesses causing extensive psychological, physical and social impact on patient's life and exerts negative effects on health-related quality of Life (HRQoL). However, the effects of surgery on the postoperative HRQoL in the different endometriosis subgroups have not been fully evaluated.

Methods: We performed a comparative retrospective study between 2014 and 2018 at the Medical University of Vienna, including all patients with surgically confirmed endometriosis who had completed the standardized Endometriosis Health Profile-30 (EHP-30) questionnaire 1 day after surgery (the questions refer to the 4 weeks preoperatively) and 6-10 weeks postoperatively.

Many adults who had a severe Narakas IV obstetric brachial plexus injury (OBPI) suffer from extensive impairments in daily living due to limited hand-arm function. The dramatic loss of axonal support at this very early age of development often render the entire extremity a biologic wasteland and reconstructive methods and therapies often fail to recover any functional hand use. In this scenario bionic reconstruction, including an elective amputation and a subsequent prosthetic fitting, may enable functional improvement in adults suffering from the consequences of such severe brachial plexus injuries.
