Background: Nationally, COVID-19 spurred the uptake of telehealth to facilitate patients' access to medical care, especially among individuals living in geographically isolated areas. Despite the potential benefits of telehealth to address health care access barriers and enhance health outcomes, there are still disparities in the accessibility and utilization of telehealth services. Hence, identifying facilitators and barriers to telehealth should be prioritized to ensure that disparities are mitigated rather than exacerbated.

Fatal borealpox in an immunosuppressed patient treated with antivirals and vaccinia immunoglobulin - Alaska, 2023.

Background: Borealpox virus (BRPV, formerly known as Alaskapox virus) is a zoonotic member of the Orthopoxvirus genus first identified in a person in 2015. In the six patients with infection previously observed BRPV involved mild, self-limiting illness. We report the first fatal BRPV infection in an immunosuppressed patient.

Immersive virtual reality in the treatment of auditory hallucinations: A PRISMA scoping review.

Background: A large group of psychiatric patients suffer from auditory hallucinations (AH) despite relevant treatment regimens. In mental health populations, AH tend to be verbal (AVH) and the content critical or abusive. Trials employing immersive virtual reality (VR) to treat mental health disorders are emerging.

A Systematic Review of the Effectiveness of Cervical Cancer Screening and Prevention Interventions for African American Women: Implications for Promoting Health Equity.

African American women suffer under the burden of cervical cancer as they are first in mortality, diagnosed at later stages, and have a survivorship rate that is lower than the national average. The aim of our review is to evaluate the effectiveness of cervical cancer screening and prevention interventions for African American women living in the United States and to assess their commitment to health equity. A literature search was conducted using PubMed, Embase, CINAHL, and Scopus using MeSH terms related to cervical cancer, human papillomavirus (HPV), screening and prevention, and African Americans.

An Appraisal of Pharmacotherapy-Pertinent Literature Published in 2021 and 2022 for Clinicians Caring for Patients With Thermal or Inhalation Injury.

Studies focusing on pharmacotherapy interventions to aid patients after thermal injury are a minor focus in burn injury-centered studies and published across a wide array of journals, which challenges those with limited resources to keep their knowledge current. This review is a renewal of previous years' work to facilitate extraction and review of the most recent pharmacotherapy-centric studies in patients with thermal and inhalation injury. Twenty-three geographically dispersed, board-certified pharmacists participated in the review.

Methods for a composite ecological suitability measure to inform cumulative restoration assessments in Gulf of Mexico estuaries.

Ecosystem management requires a systematic, holistic approach that considers ecological and social outcomes. Effective restoration practices promote a balance of ecological and social goals by addressing ecological integrity, efficiently maximizing benefits while minimizing investment, and encompassing collaborative stakeholder engagement. Socio-ecological assessments can inform adaptive management and be utilized to prioritize restoration activities and monitor restoration effectiveness.

BACKGROUND: Staffing models within nursing units have long been a hot topic of discussion. The COVID-19 pandemic exacerbated this discussion by straining the national nursing environment and workforce. Before the pandemic, the neuroscience intensive care unit (NSICU) primarily used an acuity-adjusted staffing model and aimed for a nurse-to-patient ratio of 1:1.

Magnetic resonance imaging enhancement of spinal nerve roots in a boy with X-linked adrenoleukodystrophy before diagnosis of chronic inflammatory demyelinating polyneuropathy.

We present a boy with X-linked adrenoleukodystrophy (X-ALD) who was found to have lumbar nerve root enhancement on a screening MRI of the spine. The MRI was performed for lower extremity predominant symptoms. Several weeks after this MRI, he developed leg pain and was averse to walking long distances.

A Systematic Review of the Effectiveness of Health Education Programs for Cervical Cancer Prevention in Rural Communities: Implications for Promoting Health Equity.

Rural women face an increased risk of cervical cancer diagnosis in comparison to women living in metropolitan areas. This review synthesized and critically evaluated cervical cancer screening interventions that target women living in rural communities in the USA. EBSCO, JSTOR, Medline, PsychINFO, Psychology and Behavioral Sciences Collection, PubMed, and Cochrane Library were searched using keywords related to cervical cancer screening, rural communities, and prevention interventions.

Learning from Latent Safety Threats Identified During Simulation to Improve Patient Safety.

Background: Latent safety threats (LSTs-characteristics of design, processes, or physical environment in health care compromising patient safety) are commonly revealed during simulation-based training. Methods of collecting, analyzing, and classifying LSTs are underdeveloped and not standardized. Building on a large simulation program in one organization, the authors aimed to collect LSTs systematically and develop a taxonomy to classify them.

Study protocol for virtual leisure investigating the effect of virtual reality-delivered stress reduction, entertainment and distraction on the use of coercion and need-based medication and patient satisfaction at a closed psychiatric intensive care unit - a mixed-methods pilot clinical trial.

Introduction: The environment at a psychiatric inpatient ward can lead to emotional distress and behavioural deviations in vulnerable individuals potentially resulting in conflicts, increased use of need-based medication and coercive actions, along with low satisfaction with treatment. To accommodate these challenges, recreational and entertaining interventions are recommended. The tested interventions have, however, shown varying effects and demand a high degree of planning and staff involvement while being difficult to adapt to individual needs.

Plant reproduction is a complex, highly-coordinated process in which a single, male germ cell grows through the maternal reproductive tissues to reach and fertilise the egg cell. Focussing on Arabidopsis thaliana, we review signalling between male and female partners which is important throughout the pollen tube journey, especially during pollen tube reception at the ovule. Numerous receptor kinases and their coreceptors are implicated in signal perception in both the pollen tube and synergid cells at the ovule entrance, and several specific peptide and carbohydrate ligands for these receptors have recently been identified.

Asphalt's widespread usage in construction materials underscores the importance of understanding its environmental consequences. This study aims to assess the influence of sunlight exposure on water quality, particularly regarding the release of hazardous organic compounds such as polycyclic aromatic compounds.

Patterns of Health Care Access and Use in an Urban American Indian and Alaska Native Population.

Studies of health care access and use among historically resilient populations, while common, often field a limited sample size and rarely ask the groups most impacted by health inequities to weigh in. This is especially so for research and programs that focus on the American Indian and Alaska Native (AIAN) population. The present study addresses this gap by examining data from a cross-sectional survey of AIANs in Los Angeles County.

Using Grand Rounds to Train and Prepare a Local Public Health Workforce To Manage COVID-19 Outbreaks During the 2020-2021 Pandemic Winter Upsurge.

In response to the coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) pandemic, the Los Angeles County Department of Public Health (DPH) expanded its workforce by >250 staff during Fall 2020 to manage the expected volume of outbreaks, which ultimately peaked. The workforce included reorganized groups of physicians, nurses, outbreak investigators from several DPH programs, and a 100+ member data science team tasked with designing and operating a data system and information flow process that became the backbone infrastructure of support for field investigation and outbreak management in real-time. The accelerated workforce expansion was completed in 3 months.

Protecting First Responders While Maintaining Personal Privacy During the COVID-19 Pandemic: One County's Approach.

In this case study, the authors discuss a special situation infectious disease alert process for first responders. Issues explored include the development of this infectious disease alert process and legal issues that the DuPage County Health Department addressed to share protected health information between public health and public safety. The authors illustrate the important relationship between a local health department and its legal counsel as they balanced the needs of different stakeholder groups and identified a solution that satisfied both without infringing on individual privacy.

Supervised learning applied to classifying fallers versus non-fallers among older adults with cancer.

Introduction: Supervised machine learning approaches are increasingly used to analyze clinical data, including in geriatric oncology. This study presents a machine learning approach to understand falls in a cohort of older adults with advanced cancer starting chemotherapy, including fall prediction and identification of contributing factors.

Materials And Methods: This secondary analysis of prospectively collected data from the GAP 70+ Trial (NCT02054741; PI: Mohile) enrolled patients aged ≥70 with advanced cancer and ≥ 1 geriatric assessment domain impairment who planned to start a new cancer treatment regimen.

From months to minutes: Creating Hyperion, a novel data management system expediting data insights for oncology research and patient care.

Here we describe the design and implementation of a novel data management platform for an academic cancer center which meets the needs of multiple stakeholders. A small, cross-functional technical team identified key challenges to creating a broad data management and access software solution: lowering the technical skill floor, reducing cost, enhancing user autonomy, optimizing data governance, and reimagining technical team structures in academia. The Hyperion data management platform was designed to meet these challenges in addition to usual considerations of data quality, security, access, stability, and scalability.

An Organizational Assessment of 34 Home Delivered Meals Programs that Engaged and Assisted Homebound Individuals With Obtaining the COVID-19 Vaccine During the Pandemic.

Vaccinating homebound individuals during the COVID-19 pandemic presented several challenges, including time and cost of engaging this group. In Los Angeles County, the departments of Public Health and Aging and Disabilities turned to home delivered meals programs (HDMs) for help with this public health priority. A mixed-method organizational assessment of 34 HDMs was conducted during March-April 2022 to describe these efforts.

Updating the Aesthetic Fluency Scale: Revised long and short forms for research in the psychology of the arts.

People's knowledge about the arts shapes how they experience and engage with art. Since its introduction, the 10-item Aesthetic Fluency Scale has been widely used to measure self-reported art knowledge. Drawing from findings and researchers' experience since then, the present work develops and evaluates a Revised Aesthetic Fluency Scale using item response theory to broaden its scope (36 items) and refine its response scale.
