Rethinking Jail Rehabilitation: Evaluating an Intensive Outpatient Program.

The goal of the intensive outpatient program was to provide services to individuals who presented with co-occurring mental health and substance abuse disorders. These services were provided to incarcerated individuals during their involvement with a large Midwestern jail facility in efforts to reduce recidivism. Behavior change is a difficult process for any population, but for those with co-occurring mental health and substance abuse disorders, it is particularly challenging.

"Fearless" Revisited: How This Peer-to-Peer Self-Help Group for Sex Offense Registrants and Their Families Continued to Operate during a Global Pandemic.

Among the challenges of the COVID-19 pandemic, peer-to-peer support groups sought virtual environments to bring individuals together. Building upon previous research of Fearless, a peer-to-peer support group for registered individuals, this study examines how changes in the format from in person to virtual impacted the group's ability to provide social support to members. A snowball sampling technique was used to identify 25 members of Fearless who regularly attended the group's virtual monthly meetings during the COVID social restrictions.

The Americanization of Karen Refugee Youth: Exploring Attitudes Toward and Use of Methamphetamine.

Drug use among refugee populations is a concerning trend in many urban American cities. For instance, Omaha, Nebraska is home to an estimated 7,000 refugees from Myanmar, with at least 75% of those being Karen refugees. The purpose of this paper is to explore methamphetamine use among Karen adolescents in Omaha and to examine whether Karen youth bring their drug use habits with them from refugee camps or if they learn about drugs from their American peers.

Beyond Circles of Support: "Fearless"-An Open Peer-to-Peer Mutual Support Group for Sex Offense Registrants and Their Family Members.

The term sex offender carries expectations that include a continuous level of sexual criminal risk and untreatable mental health conditions that govern sex offending behaviors. These role expectations by the public can socially isolate individuals who have been convicted of a crime and the people who love them. This is likely to contribute to negative self-images that can result in loneliness, isolation, and depression, and, subsequently, contribute to discontinuing support for sex offender's loved ones and reoffending.

Collective Sexual Violence in Bosnia and Sierra Leone: A Comparative Case Study Analysis.

Social scientists have long studied the patterns, motivations, and recidivism rates of sexual offenders; however, the majority of prior research has examined rape, where victims are assaulted by a single offender in isolated events. Often overlooked are sexually violent assaults committed during armed conflicts, which often exhibit group-level sexual offending. This oversight could be a result of perceived notions that sexual violence during conflict is a rare or regrettable event; however, it has been documented consistently throughout history.
