Background: Spring-assisted surgery (SAS) and cranial vault remodeling (CVR) are widely used surgical techniques to correct sagittal craniosynostosis (SC). The authors evaluated changes in regional morphology of patients with SC who had undergone SAS or CVR, using the frontal bossing index (FBI), occipital bulleting index, vertex narrowing index (VNI), and scaphocephalic severity index (SCI) to capture differences in anterior protrusion, posterior protrusion, width restriction, and global dysmorphology, respectively.

Methods: Indices were measured on computed tomography and 3-dimensional photographs (n = 788) of 257 patients with SC from 2001 through 2022 who underwent SAS (n = 177) or CVR (n = 80).

Objective: Patients with a history of surgery for single-suture craniosynostosis (SSC) as an infant often wish to participate in sports later in childhood. However, there are no established guidelines from neurosurgeons and craniofacial surgeons to guide parents in which sports their child should or should not participate. Therefore, this study aimed to evaluate the attitudes and practice patterns of experienced neurosurgeons and craniofacial surgeons regarding the counseling of caregivers of these patients about sports participation.

Background And Objectives: Symptomatic macromastia (enlarged breasts) is a syndrome of persistent headache, neck and shoulder pain, thoracic kyphosis, painful shoulder grooving from bra straps, inframammary rash, backache, and upper extremity paresthesias. Up to 89% of the 100,000 US women undergoing breast reduction surgery (reduction mammoplasty) annually report headache preoperatively with many endorsing postoperative headache improvement. Headache is one insurance indication to cover surgical reduction, and peak prevalence of migraine matches the average age of women with macromastia at time of surgery.

Introduction: Sagittal craniosynostosis (SC) is associated with scaphocephaly, an elongated narrow head shape. Assessment of regional severity in the scaphocephalic head is limited by the use of serial computed tomographic (CT) imaging or complex computer programing. Three-dimensional measurements of cranial surface morphology provide a radiation-free alternative for assessing cranial shape.

Article Synopsis
  • A multicenter study aimed to analyze long-term head shape results following three endoscopic strip craniectomy techniques used to correct sagittal craniosynostosis.
  • The techniques compared were spring-assisted strip craniectomy, wide-strip craniectomy with additional osteotomies, and narrow-strip craniectomy, with data collected from multiple hospitals.
  • Results indicated that while all procedures corrected head shape effectively, the spring-assisted method showed the best normalization of frontal features, the wide-strip method was better at correcting occipital protrusion, and the narrow-strip technique produced intermediate results.

Stomatal immunity is the primary gate of the plant pathogen defense system. Non-expressor of Pathogenesis Related 1 (NPR1) is the salicylic acid (SA) receptor, which is critical for stomatal defense. SA induces stomatal closure, but the specific role of NPR1 in guard cells and its contribution to systemic acquired resistance (SAR) remain largely unknown.

After localized invasion by bacterial pathogens, systemic acquired resistance (SAR) is induced in uninfected plant tissues, resulting in enhanced defense against a broad range of pathogens. Although SAR requires mobilization of signaling molecules the plant vasculature, the specific molecular mechanisms remain elusive. The lipid transfer protein defective in induced resistance 1 (DIR1) was identified in by screening for mutants that were defective in SAR.

Elucidation of complex molecular networks requires integrative analysis of molecular features and changes at different levels of information flow and regulation. Accordingly, high throughput functional genomics tools such as transcriptomics, proteomics, metabolomics, and lipidomics have emerged to provide system-wide investigations. Unfortunately, analysis of different types of biomolecules requires specific sample extraction procedures in combination with specific analytical instrumentation.

Although untargeted metabolomic approaches hold great promise for global identification of low molecular weight metabolites in biological samples, deep coverage and confident identification of the metabolites remains challenging due to the great diversity and number of chemical structures, especially in plants. Additionally, there is a need to employ a cell-specific research approach to many physiological and biological responses to specific environmental stimuli. Here, we report an untargeted metabolomic method using Arabidopsis thaliana guard cell samples during response to systemic signals of pathogen attack.
