Training Tomorrow's Teachers Today: a national medical student teaching and leadership retreat.

Introduction: Challenges to American academic medical centers have diverted attention and resources away from the core missions of teacher and leader development. To train the next generation of medical education leaders, substantial and institutionalized new programs are necessary.

Methods: The American Medical Student Association, with the Mount Sinai School of Medicine, designed the Training Tomorrow's Teachers Today national medical student retreat.

Resident as teacher: educating the educators.

Background: Medical students receive their clinical training from various sources: from residents during informal teaching sessions and from attending physicians during more formalized rounds. As a result of the increasing pressures of clinical medicine, efforts need to be focused on the identification and training of the next generation of clinical educators.

Description: We have created a pilot medical education elective for residents which pairs training in teaching skills with formal teaching opportunities during protected blocks of elective time, an opportunity which is rare in most residency programs and may provide for more effective teaching skill acquisition.

Personal growth during internship: a qualitative analysis of interns' responses to key questions.

Background: During clinical training, house officers frequently encounter intense experiences that may affect their personal growth. The purpose of this study was to explore processes related to personal growth during internship.

Design: Prospective qualitative study conducted over the course of internship.

Resident as teacher: the Mount Sinai experience and a review of the literature.

Residents play a pivotal role in the education of medical students and junior house staff but are rarely provided with the tools to help them teach effectively. Residents value their roles as teachers and desire training programs in teaching skills. Teaching skills courses for residents have been shown to improve residents' self-confidence and self-assessed use of effective teaching behaviors.
