Cool Communities-Urban Density, Trees, and Health.

A move towards more compact and climate-resilient cities is being encouraged around the world. As part of these plans, there is a need to manage the potential conflict between increasing urban densities and the extent of tree canopy in cities. Reductions in tree canopy are a major contributor to the urban heat island (UHI) effect, which will act to reduce rather than increase climate resilience in many cities.

Can we really diagnose diabetes during pregnancy?

Objective: To identify the accuracy of diagnosing postpartum diabetes and glucose intolerance using antepartum glycosylated hemoglobin (HbA1c) and fasting glucose values.

Study Design: A retrospective Hawaiian cohort of women with gestational diabetes during 2004-2011 were evaluated. Antepartum HbA1c and postpartum 75-g glucose tolerance tests were obtained.

Maternal temperature variation during parturition.

Objective: To characterize temperatures for normal full-term parturients.

Methods: A retrospective chart review of 189 consecutive singleton deliveries during 1996 was conducted. All available maternal sublingual temperatures were collected from the time of admission to the time of discharge from the delivery area.

Delayed-interval delivery in twin pregnancies.

Objective: To report on pregnancy outcome in six twin pregnancies with delayed-interval delivery in a single maternal-fetal medicine practice.

Study Design: All cases of attempted delayed-interval delivery from January 1988 to August 2000 in a single maternal-fetal medicine practice were retrospectively reviewed. Patients were managed with a treatment protocol that included rescue cerclage after delivery of the first born twin, antibiotics, corticosteroids and tocolysis.
