Albinism in Artibeus planirostris (Chiroptera, Phyllostomidae) in the Caatinga biome and updated list of albino bats in Brazil.

Albinism is a genetic disorder that results in a deficiency in melanin production. This type of chromatic alteration may affect several vertebrate species, but is rarely observed in nature. In Brazil, for the bat group, only 15 albino individuals have been registered.

Diagnosis of ankyloglossia in newborns: is there any difference related to the screening method?

Purpose: To diagnose ankyloglossia in newborns and compare two lingual frenulum assessment instruments.

Methods: This cross-sectional study was carried out in Recife, Pernambuco, Brazil, in 2018, with 147 mothers/newborns aged up to 30 days. The Bristol Tongue Assessment Tool and the Lingual Frenulum Evaluation Protocol for Infants were the instruments used.

Factor effect of operating conditions on the leaching of fly ashes from a pulp and paper mill.

The non-process-elements (NPE's) in the pulp and paper production, in particular chloride (Cl) and potassium (K), eventually accumulate in a sodium sulfate recovery cycle of a paper plant, especially on boiler fly ashes (flue gas cleaning). This accumulation often leads to fouling and corrosion. Thus, in order to reduce such problems, a leaching unit is typically integrated aiming to remove Cl and K and recover sodium sulfate (NaSO) from boiler fly ashes.

Intense genomic reorganization in the genus (Rodentia, Sigmodontinae): comparison between DNA barcoding and mapping of repetitive elements in three species of the Brazilian Amazon.

Thomas, 1906 is one of the most diverse and widely distributed genera within the tribe Oryzomyini. At least sixteen species in this genus have been described to date, but it is believed this genus contains undescribed species. Morphological, molecular and cytogenetic study has revealed an uncertain taxonomic status for several species, suggesting the presence of a complex of species.

Neurobehavioral and Antioxidant Effects of Ethanolic Extract of Yellow Propolis.

Propolis is a resin produced by bees from raw material collected from plants, salivary secretions, and beeswax. New therapeutic properties for the Central Nervous System have emerged. We explored the neurobehavioral and antioxidant effects of an ethanolic extract of yellow propolis (EEYP) rich in triterpenoids, primarily lupeol and -amyrin.

Comparative Study of Chemical Composition and Biological Activity of Yellow, Green, Brown, and Red Brazilian Propolis.

The chemical composition and biological activity of a sample of yellow propolis from Mato Grosso do Sul, Brazil (EEP-Y MS), were investigated for the first time and compared with green, brown, and red types of Brazilian propolis and with a sample of yellow propolis from Cuba. Overall, EEP-Y MS had different qualitative chemical profiles, as well as different cytotoxic and antimicrobial activities when compared to the other types of propolis assessed in this study and it is a different chemotype of Brazilian propolis. Absence of phenolic compounds and the presence of mixtures of aliphatic compounds in yellow propolis were determined by analysing (1)H-NMR spectra and fifteen terpenes were identified by GC-MS.

Determination of activation energy of pyrolysis of carton packaging wastes and its pure components using thermogravimetry.

Many processes have been used for recycling of carton packaging wastes. The pyrolysis highlights as a promising technology to be used for recovering the aluminum from polyethylene and generating products with high heating value. In this paper, a study on pyrolysis reactions of carton packaging wastes and its pure components was performed in order to estimate the kinetic parameters of these reactions.

Probing insulin bioactivity in oral nanoparticles produced by ultrasonication-assisted emulsification/internal gelation.

Alginate-dextran sulfate-based particles obtained by emulsification/internal gelation technology can be considered suitable carriers for oral insulin delivery. A rational study focused on the emulsification and particle recovery steps was developed in order to reduce particles to the nanosize range while keeping insulin bioactivity. There was a decrease in size when ultrasonication was used during emulsification, which was more pronounced when a cosurfactant was added.

Therapeutic combination of radiofrequency surgical dissection and oral acitretin in the management of perianal Buschke-Lowenstein tumour: a case report.

Giant condyloma acuminatum (GCA), or Buschke-Löwenstein tumour (BLT), is a rare large tumour of the anogenital area. It is caused by human papillomavirus genotypes 6 and 11, and it is characterized by aggressive local invasion and frequent recurrences after treatment. Treatment of choice is radical excision, although chemotherapy and radiation are also used in special cases.

Chromosomal homologies among vampire bats revealed by chromosome painting (phyllostomidae, chiroptera).

Substantial effort has been made to elucidate karyotypic evolution of phyllostomid bats, mostly through comparisons of G-banding patterns. However, due to the limited number of G-bands in respective karyotypes and to the similarity of non-homologous bands, an accurate evolutionary history of chromosome segments remains questionable. This is the case for vampire bats (Desmodontinae).

[Clinical and epidemiological aspects of the dengue epidemic in Recife, PE, 2002].

This paper shows data regarding dengue and hemorrhagic fever of the dengue epidemic in Recife in 2002 and the clinical, laboratorial and necropsy results from the 14 patients who died that year. The serotype Den-3 was detected in 76.3% of cases.
