Canine visceral leishmaniosis: a comparative analysis of the EIE-leishmaniose-visceral-canina-Bio-Manguinhos and the IFI-leishmaniose-visceral-canina-Bio-Manguinhos kits.

This study evaluated the performance of the EIE-leishmaniose-visceral-canina-Bio-Manguinhos (EIE-LVC) kit and to compare it with that of the IFI-leishmaniose-visceral-canina-Bio-Manguinhos (IFI-LVC) kit. Four groups of dogs were studied: group 1 (G1), dogs with clinical signs indicative of CVL and testing positive for the parasite (n = 25); group 2 (G2), dogs with only a presumed diagnosis of CVL (n = 62); group 3 (G3), dogs that had never lived in an area where CVL is endemic and never received a blood transfusion (n = 16); group 4 (G4), dogs carrying other parasites: such as babesiosis (n = 4), ehrlichiosis (n = 6) and demodicosis (n = 1). G1 and G3 were used for the calculation of sensitivity and specificity, respectively.

Demand incidence of retinal detachment in Brazil.

[Knowledge of ophthalmologists regarding the treatment of adverse reactions in fluorescein angiography].

Purposes: To evaluate the emergency resources of the clinics that perform fluorescein angiography in Pernambuco and, through a short multiple-choice questionnaire, to evaluate the ophthalmologists' performance to treat adverse reactions to contrast injection and to determine if the time after completing the specialization course in Ophthalmology influences in the results.

Methods: An interview with the eighteen ophthalmologists of the ten clinics where this examination is performed was made. The multiple-choice questionnaire had ten questions with five options each and only one correct answer.

[Predictive value of preoperative fasting glucose test of diabetic patients regarding surgical outcome in cataract surgery].

Objective: To determinate the predictive value of preoperative glucose test of diabetic patients, with age above 40 years, for visual acuity outcome and clinical perioperative complications, in cataract surgery with local anesthesia, in an academical medical center.

Methods: Type 2 diabetic patients, above 40 years of age, indicated for cataract surgery between February 10, 2000 and January 10, 2001, at the State University of Campinas, São Paulo, Brazil. All patients had a preoperative medical assessment by a physician one week before surgery, and were submitted to serum fasting glucose test and 12-lead electrocardiogram.

Anti-proliferative synergy of lysophospholipid analogues and ketoconazole against Trypanosoma cruzi (Kinetoplastida: Trypanosomatidae): cellular and ultrastructural analysis.

Objectives: Investigation of the antiproliferative synergy of the lysophospholipid analogues (LPAs) edelfosine, ilmofosine and miltefosine with the ergosterol biosynthesis inhibitor ketoconazole against Trypanosoma cruzi.

Methods: The effect of LPAs, ketoconazole and their combination was evaluated against epimastigotes and intracellular amastigotes by the parameter IC50 leading to construction of isobolograms, for determination of a synergic effect. For epimastigotes, ultrastructural damage induced by these treatments was evaluated by transmission and scanning electron microscopy.

Informant consensus factor and antibacterial activity of the medicinal plants used by the people of San Rafael Coxcatlán, Puebla, México.

Using ethnobotanical techniques, the medicinal flora used by the inhabitants of San Rafael Coxcatlán, Puebla was determined. During the field work, two types of interviews were applied (free listing and semi-structured) to 60 informants, who supplied consistent information concerning the use of 46 species of medicinal plants. Further analysis showed 13 categories of different medicinal use.

Composition and antibacterial activity of essential oil of Lantana achyranthifolia Desf. (Verbenaceae).

The essential oil of the aerial parts of Lantana achyranthifolia Desf. (Verbenaceae) was examined by GC and GC-MS. Eighteen constituents were identified.

Palladium-catalyzed synthesis of N-aryl-2-benzylindolines via tandem arylation of 2-allylaniline: control of selectivity through in situ catalyst modification.

A new synthesis of N-aryl-2-benzylindolines from 2-allylanilines and two different aryl bromides is described. This transformation involves two different sequential metal-catalyzed reactions that lead to the formation of two C-N bonds and one C-C bond in a one-pot process. The selective installation of two different aryl groups in these reactions is accomplished by in situ modification of the palladium catalyst prior to addition of the second aryl bromide.

Sporotrichosis in patient with AIDS: report of a case and review.

Although sporotrichosis is not an AIDS-defining infection, reports of sporotrichosis in individuals infected with HIV are increasing. We report an unusual case of this co-infection in a man with progressive deep cutaneous ulcerations with numerous pleomorphic yeast cells of Sporothrix schenckii. In addition a review of the literature on this subject was carried out and commented upon.

Myxopyronin B analogs as inhibitors of RNA polymerase, synthesis and biological evaluation.

A series of myxopyronin B analogs has been prepared via a convergent synthetic route and were tested for in vitro inhibitory activity against DNA-dependent RNA polymerase and antibacterial activity against E. coli and S. aureus.

Are routine preoperative medical tests needed with cataract surgery? Study of visual acuity outcome.

Purpose: The aim of this prospective randomized clinical trial was to investigate whether routine medical testing before cataract surgery reduced the rate of ocular surgical complications and to study its impact on visual acuity outcome.

Methods: The study was carried out in an academic medical center in Brazil, at State University of Campinas, between 10 February 2000 and 10 January 2001. The scheduled cataract operations were randomly assigned to one of two groups: 1) to be preceded by routine medical testing (the "routine-testing group") or 2) not to be preceded by routine medical testing (the "selective-testing group").

DNA double-strand breaks, recombination and synapsis: the timing of meiosis differs in grasshoppers and flies.

The temporal and functional relationships between DNA events of meiotic recombination and synaptonemal complex formation are a matter of discussion within the meiotic field. To analyse this subject in grasshoppers, organisms that have been considered as models for meiotic studies for many years, we have studied the localization of phosphorylated histone H2AX (gamma-H2AX), which marks the sites of double-strand breaks (DSBs), in combination with localization of cohesin SMC3 and recombinase Rad51. We show that the loss of gamma-H2AX staining is spatially and temporally linked to synapsis, and that in grasshoppers the initiation of recombination, produced as a consequence of DSB formation, precedes synapsis.

[Waste of medical tests in preoperative evaluation for cataract surgery].

The objective of this clinical trial was to determine the frequency of medical tests considered unnecessary in routine preoperative evaluation for cataract surgery. Unnecessary costs with these tests were also evaluated. For patients assigned to the selective testing group, it was requested that no preoperative testing be performed unless the patient presented a new or worsening medical problem warranting medical evaluation with testing.

Ethnobotany and antibacterial activity of some plants used in traditional medicine of Zapotitlán de las Salinas, Puebla (México).

The village of Zapotitlán de las Salinas is situated in the Valley of Tehuacán-Cuicatlán, Puebla, Mexico. Plant species used by the local inhabitants to treat gastrointestinal diseases were identified using ethnobotanical, ethnographic and taxonomic methods. Out of 119 interviews, 44 plant species were registered, of which the following are the most frequently used (listed in descending order): Lippia graveolens H.

The relative contribution of IL-4 receptor signaling and IL-10 to susceptibility to Leishmania major.

The roles of IL-10 and IL-4 receptor signaling were evaluated in a murine model of Leishmania major infection. In previous studies the L. major substrain LV39 caused progressive, nonhealing lesions in BALB/c mice deficient for IL-4R alpha-chain (IL-4R alpha), while substrain IR173 was highly controlled.

[Predictive value of preoperative tests in facectomy].

Objective: To establish the prevalence of abnormal results in routine preoperative tests prior to facectomies and whether they influence the occurrence of perioperative clinical complications.

We investigated the activity of TAK-187, an experimental antifungal triazole with a long terminal half-life in several experimental animals, against Trypanosoma cruzi. In vitro studies showed that the minimal inhibitory concentration (MIC) against the (extracellular) epimastigote form was 0.3-1 microM, while the corresponding concentration against clinically relevant intracellular amastigotes was 1 nM.

[Reasons for cataract surgery cancellation].
