This study aimed to describe the severity of abortion-related complications, factors associated with complications, the types of management and the experience of care in Brazil. A cross-sectional study in twenty hospitals (10 in Federal District, 3 in Rondônia and 7 in Maranhão). For 3 months, all women treated for abortion/miscarriage had their data collected.

Tear film stability in children: Age and sex associations explored through non-invasive tear break-up time.

Purpose: The stability of the tear film is crucial for maintaining good ocular health. Its assessment provides valuable insights into paediatric eye conditions. This study investigates the stability of the tear film in children and its association with predictive factors such as age and sex, for a better understanding of tear film dynamics in a paediatric population.

Albumin/Hyaluronic Acid Nanoparticle-Laden Contact Lenses for the Ocular Delivery of 5-Fluorouracil.

Nanoparticle-laden contact lenses are a formidable strategy for ocular drug delivery. However, incorporating nanoparticles to achieve sustained drug release without affecting the contact lenses' properties remains a challenging task. In this work, daily and monthly replacement silicone-hydrogel contact lenses laden with bovine serum albumin/hyaluronic acid (BSA/HA) nanoparticles are presented.

Effective communication between doctors and patients is essential for treatment adherence and better clinical outcomes. Although 3D printing has advanced in medicine, its impact on doctor-patient communication still requires further investigation. This randomized clinical trial evaluated the effectiveness of 3D anatomical models as a tool to facilitate communication in orthopedic consultations.

Intellectual humility and the learning sciences: can self-reports and behavioral measures coexist to understand civic engagement?

Recent political events across the globe have illustrated a resurgence in people's intolerance to ideas different from their own. We mobilize the idea of intellectual humility to assess how extant psychological theories account for individual differences in people's tolerance for conflicting ideas. Then, we introduce concepts from the Learning Sciences to determine how alternative methodologies could augment research on intellectual humility and civic engagement.

Background: Vestibular Activities and Participation Measure (VAP) subscales assess the effect of vestibular disorders on activity and participation. This study aimed to perform the cross-cultural adaptation and assess the validity, internal consistency, reliability, and measurement error of the Brazilian version of VAP subscales.

Methods: The cross-cultural adaptation followed the translation, synthesis, back-translation, review by a committee of experts, and pretesting phases.

Measurement Properties of Two Questionnaires Assessing Fear-Avoidance in Patients With Chronic Low Back Pain.

Unlike other natural sciences, causal mechanisms in physiology support physiological functions and reflect biological adaptations.

Dispositional greed and life satisfaction: the role of social comparison for well-being.

There is a lack of studies addressing the psychological mechanisms underlying the association between individual differences in greed and well-being. This study tested the relationship between dispositional greed, and satisfaction with life, as well as the moderating effect of social comparison orientation on this association ( = 373). As expected for hypothesis 1, we found that greed correlated negatively with satisfaction with life, and positively with social comparison orientation, even after controlling for individuals' mental health index (anxiety and depression), supporting the hypothesis 2.

Evaluation of the Chilean National Orthopaedic Examination Over 11 Years: Progress and Outcomes of National and International Examinees.

Introduction: The National Orthopaedics Examination (EMNOT) was initially designed for Chilean orthopaedic program graduates and is now a crucial component of the revalidation process for international orthopaedic surgeons seeking practice in Chile. This study aims to describe participation and performance of EMNOT examinees based on their origin and to analyze the difficulty and discrimination indexes during its first 11 years of implementation.

Methods: A retrospective assessment was conducted on all EMNOT results from 2009 to 2019.

Decoding complex inherited phenotypes in rare disorders: the DECIPHERD initiative for rare undiagnosed diseases in Chile.

Rare diseases affect millions of people worldwide, and most have a genetic etiology. The incorporation of next-generation sequencing into clinical settings, particularly exome and genome sequencing, has resulted in an unprecedented improvement in diagnosis and discovery in the past decade. Nevertheless, these tools are unavailable in many countries, increasing health care gaps between high- and low-and-middle-income countries and prolonging the "diagnostic odyssey" for patients.
