New progesterone esters as 5alpha-reductase inhibitors.

The pharmacological activity of four new progesterone derivatives: 4-bromo-17alpha-(p-fluorobenzoyloxy)-4-pregnene-3,20-dione (7), 4-bromo-17alpha-(p-bromobenzoyloxy)-4-pregnene-3,20-dione (8), 4-bromo-17alpha-(p-chlorobenzoyloxy)-pregnene-3,20-dione (9) and 4-bromo-17alpha-(p-toluoyloxy)-4-pregnene-3,20-dione (10) was determined. These compounds were evaluated as 5alpha-reductase inhibitors on gonadectomized hamster seminal vesicles and flank organs. The pharmacological data of this study indicate that compounds 7 and 9 having at C-17 p-fluorobenzoyloxy and p-chlorobenzoyloxy ester functions respectively showed the highest antiandrogenic effect as measured by the reduction of the weight of the seminal vesicles.

Renewing information infrastructure at Hospital das Clínicas.

In this paper we describe the process of renewing the Informatics infrastructure of Sao Paulo University Medical School Hospital, a very complex environment. Our proposal consists of a change in the paradigm of Informatics and the use of Information Technology in the hospital. That change aims at making information available to the hospital, its managers, health care workers and patients.

[Mortality trends due to myocardial ischemia in capital cities of the metropolitan areas of Brazil, 1979-89].

Purpose: To study the trends of mortality rates from cardiovascular diseases (CVD) and coronary heart disease (CHD) in eight capitals of Brazil.

Methods: Death rates for these cities were studied in men (M) and female (F), standardized using the population of São Paulo, SP, 1980. Rates were calculated for CVD (ICD-9: 390-459) and CHD (ICD-9:410-414).

The authors present a follicolitis and perifolliculitis case with abscess and profound nodules, unfolded on a patient who had been subjected to an abusive local an general treatment with corticoids. That process had progressed with similar characteristics to Majocchi's tricophytic granuloma, although this case appeared over the application of that therapeutic. The allergological study could prove a depression of the cellular immunity, but at the same time it demonstrated an abnormal reaction, as an anaphylactoid one, at trychophytin and penicillin.
