Background: Occipital neuralgia manifests as pain in the cutaneous distribution of occipital nerves, with the greater occipital nerve stemming from the C2 spinal nerve and the lesser occipital nerve originating from the C2 and C3 spinal nerves. While pulsed radiofrequency ablation of the C2 dorsal root ganglion (DRG) is an effective treatment for refractory occipital neuralgia, accessing the C2 DRG remains a clinical challenge even under fluoroscopic guidance.

Objective: We aimed to develop an ultrasonographic method for quickly and accurately accessing the C2 DRG.

Herbicide-induced phytoplankton inhibition threatens coastal biodiversity and ecosystem function. Although studies employing single-frequence exposure aid in understanding the phytoplankton community's responses to herbicides, it's difficult to objectively assess their response to cyclic herbicide inputs (long-term low-dose and short-term high-dose) in marine ecosystems. Here, we analyzed the concentration and distribution of herbicides in global coastal waters and simulated this cyclic process through a two-phase atrazine exposure mesocosm experiment and laboratory tests.

Atherosclerosis is the primary cause of cardiovascular events such as heart attacks and strokes. However, current medical practice lacks non-invasive, reliable approaches for both imaging atherosclerotic plaques and delivering therapeutic agents directly therein. Here, a biocompatible and biodegradable pH-responsive nanoscale coordination polymers (NCPs) based theranostic system is reported for managing atherosclerosis.

CO injection into shale reservoirs has been recognized as one of the most promising techniques for enhanced oil recovery and carbon capture, utilization, and storage. However, the omnipresent nanopores and the water films formed near the pore walls affect the understanding of mechanisms of CO regulating crude oil mobility in shale nanopores. In this work, we employ molecular dynamics simulations to study the occurrence and flow of CO and octane (C) mixtures in quartz nanopores containing water films, to illustrate the impact mechanisms of CO on C mobility.

Background: Radiofrequency thermocoagulation (RFT) of the thoracic nerve root is commonly employed in treating medication-refractory thoracic post-herpetic neuralgia (PHN). However, RFT procedures' suboptimal pain relief and high occurrence of postoperative skin numbness present persistent challenges. Previous single-cohort research indicated that the low-temperature plasma coblation technique may potentially improve pain relief and reduce the incidence of skin numbness.

In this study, asymmetric AlO-SiO Janus nanoparticles with a dumbbell-like structure were synthesized by a facile chemical process in the aqueous phase. Prior to synthesis, AlO nanoparticles in hydrosol were amino-modified using 3-aminopropyl triethoxysilane (KH550) and then carboxyl acid-functionalized using a ring-opening reaction of the amine functions with succinic anhydride, imparting unique anionic properties to the AlO end. SiO nanoparticles were rendered hydrophobic through modification with hexamethyldisilazane (HMDS) and further functionalized with 3-chloropropyl triethoxysilane (KH230).

Predicting the magnitude of herbicide impacts on marine primary productivity remains challenging because the extent of worldwide herbicide pollution in coastal waters and the concentration-response relationships of phytoplankton communities to multiple herbicides are unclear. By analyzing the spatiotemporal distribution of herbicides at 661 bay and gulf stations worldwide from 1990 to 2022, we determined median, third quartile and maximum concentrations of 12 triazine herbicides of 0.18 nmol L, 1.

Coastal pollution caused by the importation of agricultural herbicides is one of the main environmental problems that directly affect the coastal primary productivity and even the safety of human seafood. It is urgent to evaluate the ecological risk objectively and explore feasible removal strategies. However, existing studies focus on the runoff distribution and risk assessment of specific herbicides in specific areas, and compared with soil environment, there are few studies on remediation methods for water environment.

Two children with late-onset congenital central hypoventilation syndrome were reported, one of whom was male and had no abnormal manifestations after birth, respiratory failure occurs at the age of 1 year and 6 months. After being hospitalized, he was treated with oxygen inhalation and non-invasive ventilation, but carbon dioxide retention could not be corrected. After one month of tracheal intubation, he was failure to wean from ventilator, so tracheostomy was performed.

Background: Ultrasound (US)-guided injections for chronic pain has multiple advantages over traditional radiologic method. The study was performed to exam the clinical outcomes of lumbar transforaminal epidural injection (LTFEI) between US and fluoroscopy (FL) guidance for lumbar radiculopathy (LRP).

Methods: A total of 164 patients with LRP were randomly assigned into US and FL group to receive LTFEI in a 1:1 ratio.

High-quality mouse dorsal root ganglion (DRG) cryostat sections are crucial for proper immunochemistry staining and RNAscope studies in the research of inflammatory and neuropathic pain, itch, as well as other peripheral neurological conditions. However, it remains a challenge to consistently obtain high-quality, intact, and flat cryostat sections onto glass slides because of the tiny sample size of the DRG tissue. So far, there is no article describing an optimal protocol for DRG cryosectioning.

Introduction: Trigeminal neuralgia is a debilitating condition that can significantly impair the quality of life of affected individuals. Percutaneous balloon compression (PBC) has been established as an effective treatment for this condition. However, the use of general anesthesia during the procedure poses challenges to achieving the desired degree of nerve damage without causing excessive numbness.

Introduction: Indoleamine 2,3-dioxygenase 1 (IDO1) is highly related to the immune evasion of a wide range of malignancies due to its role in the immune suppression caused by the depletion of tryptophan (Trp) and the accumulation of kynurenine (Kyn). The combination of IDO1 inhibitors with other treatments represents a promising strategy in immunotherapy, although considerable challenges lie ahead.

Areas Covered: This review focuses on patent publications searched from Espacenet and Google Scholar, and related to IDO1 inhibitors with potential anti-cancer utilization during the period 2018-2022.

  • The study aimed to analyze the prevalence of autism spectrum disorder (ASD) based on factors like birth weight, gestational age, and size for gestational age, using data from various medical databases up to December 2021.
  • A total of 75 studies were included in the meta-analysis, revealing that the prevalence of ASD was notably higher in very-low-birth weight (3.1%), low-birth weight (2.3%), very preterm (2.8%), preterm (2.1%), and small-for-gestational-age (1.9%) groups compared to those with normal birth weight and term births.
  • The research also highlighted geographical differences in ASD prevalence and underscored that certain groups (

Cardioprotective medication is the common treatment to relieve myocardial ischemia/reperfusion (I/R) injury. However, limited by the low bioavailability of therapeutic drugs, the therapeutic outcome is barely satisfactory. Because the I/R injury can enhance the permeability of the vasculature and allow the extravasation of nanoparticles into the surrounding tissue, herein we formulate the cardiotonic drug olprinone (Olp) in cross-linked micelles as the nanomedicine to achieve myocardium-targeted delivery after systematic administration.

Background: Because it is traditionally difficult and time-consuming to identify the foramen ovale (FO) with fluoroscopy, we recently developed the H-figure method to acquire fluoroscopic view of FO with shorter procedure time and less radiation. However, the impact of such an H-figure approach on the clinical outcomes of trigeminal ganglion radiofrequency thermocoagulation (RFT) in treating idiopathic trigeminal neuralgia (ITN) remains unclear.

Methods: In a 12-month follow-up retrospective cohort study, patients with ITN had fluoroscopy-guided RFT of trigeminal ganglion via either classic approach (n = 100) or H-figure approach (n = 136) to identify FO.
