Intermediate-term oncological and functional outcomes in prostate cancer patients treated with perineal robot-assisted radical prostatectomy: A single center analysis.

Objective: In the last 10 years, robotic platforms allowed to resume of some alternative surgical approaches, including perineal robot-assisted radical prostatectomy (p-RARP). Herein, we present in detail the oncological and functional outcomes of patients who underwent p-RARP with a median follow-up of 30 months.

Methods: Patients presenting low- or intermediate-risk prostate cancer and prostate volume up to 60 mL who underwent p-RARP between November 2018 and November 2022 were selected.

Gender and Liver Steatosis Discriminate Different Physiological Patterns in Obese Patients Undergoing Bariatric Surgery: Obesity Center Cohort.

Background: Obesity is a major public health problem worldwide. Bariatric surgery can reduce body weight, and it is one of the better ways to improve metabolic disease and lifestyle. The aim of this study was to explore a new cohort of patients with obesity and evaluate the gender differences and the steatosis status within the gender group.

Quantitative Time-Resolved Fluorescence Imaging of Androgen Receptor and Prostate-Specific Antigen in Prostate Tissue Sections.

Androgen receptor (AR) and prostate-specific antigen (PSA) are expressed in the prostate and are involved in prostate cancer (PCa). The aim of this study was to develop reliable protocols for reproducible quantification of AR and PSA in benign and malignant prostate tissue using time-resolved fluorescence (TRF) imaging techniques. AR and PSA were detected with TRF in tissue microarrays from 91 PCa patients.

Automatic registration of multi-modal microscopy images for integrative analysis of prostate tissue sections.

Background: Prostate cancer is one of the leading causes of cancer related deaths. For diagnosis, predicting the outcome of the disease, and for assessing potential new biomarkers, pathologists and researchers routinely analyze histological samples. Morphological and molecular information may be integrated by aligning microscopic histological images in a multiplex fashion.

A high-density tissue microarray from patients with clinically localized prostate cancer reveals ERG and TATI exclusivity in tumor cells.

Background: Prostate cancer (PCa) is characterized by high tumor heterogeneity. In 2005, the fusion between the androgen-regulated gene TMPRSS2 and members of the ETS family was discovered in prostate cancer. In particular, fusion of TMPRSS2 with ERG was found in approximately 50% of prostate cancers and considered as an early event in the onset of the disease.

Diathermy of leaking sclerotomies after 23-gauge transconjunctival pars plana vitrectomy: a prospective study.

Purpose: To evaluate the efficacy of bipolar diathermy in ensuring closure of leaking sclerotomies after complete 23-gauge transconjunctival sutureless vitrectomy.

Methods: In this prospective, interventional case series, in 136 eyes of 136 patients with at least one leaking sclerotomy at the end of a complete 23-gauge transconjunctival sutureless vitrectomy, external bipolar wet-field diathermy was applied to leaking sclerotomies, including the conjunctiva and sclera. Intraoperative wound closure, and postoperatively, at 6 hours, 1 day and 3 days, sclerotomies leakage, intraocular pressure, hypotony, and hypotony-related complications were evaluated.

miQ--a novel microRNA based diagnostic and prognostic tool for prostate cancer.

Today, the majority of prostate tumors are detected at early stages with uncertain prognosis. Therefore, we set out to identify early predictive markers of prostate cancer with aggressive progression characteristics. We measured the expression of microRNAs (miRNA) using qRT-PCR in formalin fixed and paraffin embedded prostatic tissue samples from a Swedish cohort of 49 patients with prostate cancer and 25 without cancer and found seven of 13 preselected miRNAs to discriminate between the two groups.

Anastomotic leakage is a severe complication in colorectal surgery with a lot of generic and specific risk factors. There are still controversies about the possibility to prevent it or to limit its severity with the use of faecal diversions. We report our experience on 189 patients operated in five years on colon-rectum, in election and emergency, with manual or mechanical anastomoses in the last 20 cm from the anal verge.

Lateralisation of escape responses in the stripe-faced dunnart, Sminthopsis macroura (Dasyuridae: Marsupialia).

Although lateralisation has been observed in many vertebrate species, marsupials have been neglected in the study of lateralisation. We investigated the behavioural responses of the stripe-faced dunnart (Sminthopsis macroura) to a mechanical model of a snake approaching into the monocular (left and right) or the binocular visual field. The snake model was presented to 30 adult subjects.

Lateralisation of predator avoidance responses in three species of toads.

Lateralisation of responses to presentation of a simulated predator was investigated in three species of toads: two European species (the common toad, Bufo bufo, and the green toad, Bufo viridis) and one species introduced to Australia from South America, the cane toad Bufo marinus . First a simulated snake was presented moving rapidly towards the toad in the frontal field of vision and the toad's escape responses, including jumps to the right and to the left, were recorded. No significant bias in left or right side jumping was apparent in this test.

[Laparoscopic cholecystectomy for acute cholecystitis: our experience].

Laparoscopic cholecystectomy (LC) is now the gold standard in the treatment of cholelithiasis. LC is safe even in patients with acute cholecystitis. In our 118 cases there was 4 major complications as bile duct injuries (3%) and 13 minor complications (11%); conversion rate was 21% (24 patients), without mortality.

Copper perturbation in 2 monozygotic twins discordant for degree of cognitive impairment.

Background: Recent evidence indicates that peripheral tissue markers can provide information regarding changes affecting cellular metabolism in Alzheimer disease (AD). We previously reported that serum copper levels can discriminate subjects with AD from normal control subjects (with 60% sensitivity and 95% specificity) and from patients with vascular dementia (with 63% sensitivity and 85% specificity).

Objective: To study the correlation between AD and serum levels of transition metals and markers of peripheral oxidative stress.

[Manual colonic anastomosis with continuous single layer suture. Our experience].

The use of staplers has produced a reduction on operative times in the colorectal surgery without reduction of anastomotic complications. We present our experience about colonic anastomoses (ileo-colic, colo-colic and colo-rectal intraperitoneal anastomoses) with extramucosal one-layer continuous suture in synthetic slow absorbable one-filament. In the period January 2000-January 2003 we performed 157 operations on the large bowel, with 113 manual colonic anastomoses.

Lateralization of ventral fins use during object exploration in the blue gourami (Trichogaster trichopterus).

Blue gourami fish have a pair of modified ventral fins that are used to obtain tactile information about surrounding objects. Use of ventral fins by blue gourami was investigated during initial exploration of novel objects. When exposed to a sequence of novel plastic objects, varying in shape and colour, the blue gourami showed preferential use of the left fin during initial contacts.

[A uterine pecoma: a case report].

The authors describe the first ever reported case of a malignant pecoma of the uterus infiltrating the ovary, the tube and two bowel loops. This extremely rare tumour usually shows a benign behaviour and seems to arise from the perivascular epithelioid cells (PEC).

Lateralized agonistic responses and hindlimb use in toads.

The recent discovery of forepaw preferences (handedness) in toad species has provided some insight into the evolution of brain lateralization. We tested the prediction that, as in higher vertebrates, visual lateralization and other motor preferences (footedness) also exists in toad species. During feeding periods, South American cane toads, Bufo marinus, showed a population bias to strike with the tongue at other toads occupying their left visual field.

Complementary right and left hemifield use for predatory and agonistic behaviour in toads.

Cerebral lateralization, the differing specializations of the right and left sides of the brain once thought to be unique of humans, is now well known to occur in both birds and mammals. Here we report that in toads the right hemisfield of vision guides predatory tongue-striking responses towards moving prey and the left hemisfield guides agnostic tongue-striking responses towards conspecifics. This indicates, for the first time, complementary cerebral specializations for visual processing in anurans, and strongly supports the hypothesis that lateralized brain functions in birds and mammals may have arisen from a common lateralized ancestor.

[Cervical neurinomas. (Considerations in five cases operated in Day-Surgery)].

We report the experiment of five cases of neurinoma observed in the division of Day Surgery of the Third Surgery Clinic, operating in the Hematology Institute of University of Studies "La Sapienza" in Rome. The problems of the diagnosis of this neoplasia has been faced, though it is commonly unknown or confused with other cervical especially lymphonodules tumefactions, from which it is almost impossible to distinguish before the operation. In the period of six years on 775 cases of cervical neoformations have been operated only 5 patients bearers of neuromi; two originated from vago cervicale (right and left), one from simpatico cervicale on the left, another from the left spinal accessory and the last from the secondary medial trunk of the left brachial plexus.

Somatosensory stimulation improves imagery disorders in neglect.

A group of 9 right brain damaged patients with unilateral neglect performed a set of tasks involving mental imagery with and without a transcutaneous electrical neural stimulation (TENS) to both sides of the neck. Results showed that TENS on the left side of the neck produced significant improvements of performances on the left side of mental representations of objects (drawing, shape comparison) as well as on left side of mental images of space (description of squares). The results suggest that the modification induced by TENS may affect the imagery systems involved in objects as well as in space representation.
