Symbiont genotype plays a vital role in the ability of a coral host to tolerate rising ocean temperatures, with some members of the family Symbiodiniaceae possessing more thermal tolerance than others. While existing studies on genetic structure in symbiont populations have focused on broader scales of 10-100 s of km, there is a noticeable gap in understanding the seascape genetics of coral symbionts at finer-yet ecologically and evolutionarily relevant-scales. Here, we mapped short reads from 271 holobiont genome libraries of individual colonies to protein coding genes from the chloroplast genome to identify patterns of symbiont population genetic structure.

Aims: New three-dimensional cardiac visualization technologies are increasingly employed for anatomic digital twins in pre-operative planning. However, the role and influence of extended reality (virtual, augmented, or mixed) within heart team settings remain unclear. We aimed to assess the impact of mixed reality visualization of the intracardiac anatomy on surgical decision-making in patients with complex heart defects.

Learning cardiac morphology largely involves spatial abilities and studies indicate benefits from innovative 3D visualization technologies that speed up and increase the learning output. Studies comparing these teaching tools and their educational output are rare and few studies include complex congenital heart defects. This study compared the effects of 3D prints, mixed reality (MR) viewing of 3D meshes and standard cardiac CT slice images on medical students' understanding of complex congenital heart defect morphology, measuring both objective level of understanding and subjective educational experience.

Aims: Structural heart defects, including congenital ventricular septal defect closure or intracardiac rerouting, frequently require surgical reconstruction using hand-cut patch materials. Digitally modelled patch templates may improve patch fit and reduce outflow tract obstruction, residual defect risk, and conduction system damage. In this study, we benchmarked mixed-reality and a desktop application against a digitalized model of a real implanted patch.

Catheter-based intervention procedures contain complex maneuvers, and they are often performed using fluoroscopic guidance assisted by 2D and 3D echocardiography viewed on a flat screen that inherently limits depth perception. Emerging mixed reality (MR) technologies, combined with advanced rendering techniques, offer potential enhancement in depth perception and navigational support. The study aims to evaluate a MR-based guidance system for the atrial septal puncture (ASP) procedure utilizing a phantom anatomical model.

Genome-wide association studies identified a single nucleotide polymorphism (SNP) downstream of the transcription factor Sox8, associated with an increased risk of multiple sclerosis (MS). Sox8 is known to influence oligodendrocyte terminal differentiation and is involved in myelin maintenance by mature oligodendrocytes. The possible link of a Sox8 related SNP and MS risk, along with the role of Sox8 in oligodendrocyte physiology prompted us to investigate its relevance during de- and remyelination using the cuprizone model.

Why some of us remember events more clearly than others and why memory loses precision over time is a major focus in memory research. Here, we show that the recruitment of specific neuroanatomical pathways within the medial temporal lobe (MTL) of the brain defines the precision of the memory recalled over the lifespan. Using optogenetics, neuronal activity mapping, and studying recent to very remote memories, we report that the hippocampal subfield CA1 is necessary for retrieving the gist of events and receives maximal support from MTL cortical areas (MEC, LEC, PER, and POR) for recalling the most remote memories.

A slitted base cavity of constant depth with a varying filling ratio 0≤R_{f}≤100% is experimentally investigated to reduce the form drag of a three-dimensional blunt body (the so-called squareback Ahmed body) at a Reynolds number Re=2.89×10^{5}. The drag reduction is achieved by a decrease of base suction (or, equivalently, the increase of pressure at the base).

The ability of local populations to adapt to future climate conditions is facilitated by a balance between short range dispersal allowing local buildup of adaptively beneficial alleles, and longer dispersal moving these alleles throughout the species range. Reef building corals have relatively low dispersal larvae, but most population genetic studies show differentiation only over 100s of km. Here, we report full mitochondrial genome sequences from 284 tabletop corals () from 39 patch reefs in Palau, and show two signals of genetic structure across reef scales from 1 to 55 km.

Avoidance-based emotion regulation plays a central role in the development and maintenance of anxiety disorders across the life span. However, measures for children that account for different avoidance strategies, are scarce. Derived from Gross' Process Model of Emotion Regulation, the Bochum Assessment of Avoidance-based Emotion Regulation for Children (BAER-C) was developed to assess avoidance strategies (cognitive avoidance, behavioural avoidance, verbal reassurance, and social reassurance) and reappraisal in anticipatory anxious situations.

Anaerobic toluene degradation involves β-oxidation of the first intermediate (R)-2-benzylsuccinate to succinyl-CoA and benzoyl-CoA. Here, we characterize the last enzyme of this pathway, (S)-2-benzoylsuccinyl-CoA thiolase (BbsAB). Although benzoylsuccinyl-CoA is not available for enzyme assays, the recombinantly produced enzymes from two different species showed the reverse activity, benzoylsuccinyl-CoA formation from benzoyl-CoA and succinyl-CoA.

In treating childhood anxiety disorders, therapists use highly individualized anxiety hierarchies to assess anxiety-eliciting situations and to personalize treatment. In contrast, psychometric assessment of anxiety symptoms in children usually consists of standardized questionnaires, assessing either total anxiety or disorder-specific symptom scores, prioritizing comparability over individual information. To account for interindividual differences, the Anxiety and Avoidance Scale for Children (AVAC) was developed, following a precise, personalized, assessment approach.

Anaerobic toluene degradation proceeds by fumarate addition to produce (R)-benzylsuccinate as first intermediate, which is further degraded via β-oxidation by five enzymes encoded in the conserved bbs operon. This study characterizes two enzymes of this pathway, (E)-benzylidenesuccinyl-CoA hydratase (BbsH), and (S,R)-2-(α-hydroxybenzyl)succinyl-CoA dehydrogenase (BbsCD) from Thauera aromatica. BbsH, a member of the enoyl-CoA hydratase family, converts (E)-benzylidenesuccinyl-CoA to 2-(α-hydroxybenzyl)succinyl-CoA and was subsequently used in a coupled enzyme assay with BbsCD, which belongs to the short-chain dehydrogenases/reductase (SDR) family.

Climate change is dramatically changing ecosystem composition and productivity, leading scientists to consider the best approaches to map natural resistance and foster ecosystem resilience in the face of these changes. Here, we present results from a large-scale experimental assessment of coral bleaching resistance, a critical trait for coral population persistence as oceans warm, in 221 colonies of the coral across 37 reefs in Palau. We find that bleaching-resistant individuals inhabit most reefs but are found more often in warmer microhabitats.

Mental diseases are associated with high levels of distress in various areas of life for those, who are affected. Taking a closer look at the social circumstances, not exclusively the people themselves but also their family members are affected, especially children. In adult treatment these children are often neglected, even if they have a higher risk of suffering a mental illness themselves.

Objective: A number of tissue penetrating opto-electrodes to simultaneously record and optogenetically influence brain activity have been developed. For experiments at the surface of the brain, such as electrocorticogram (ECoG) recordings and surface optogenetics, fewer devices have been described and no device has found widespread adoption for neuroscientific experiments. One issue slowing adoption is the complexity and fragility of existing devices, typically based on transparent electrode materials like graphene and indium-tin oxide (ITO).

Background: In children and adolescents, anxiety disorders (ADs) are among the most prevalent mental disorders. While there is a solid empirical foundation to support CBT as an evidence-based treatment for childhood ADs, the mechanisms underlying the efficacy of CBT are not well explored. Exposure is assumed to be vital to the efficacy of CBT in ADs, but empirical evidence (e.
