Caring for robots: How care comes to matter in human-machine interfacing.

Care robots promise to assist older people in an ageing society. This article investigates the socio-material conditions of care with robots by focusing on the usually invisible practices of human-machine interfacing. I define human-machine interfacing as the activities by roboticists and others to render interaction between robots and people possible in the first place.

The Impact of ACEs on BMI: An Investigation of the Genotype-Environment Effects of BMI.

Adverse Childhood Experiences are stressful and traumatic events occurring before the age of eighteen shown to cause mental and physical health problems, including increased risk of obesity. Obesity remains an ongoing national challenge with no predicted solution. We examine a subset of the Healthy Nevada Project, focusing on a multi-ethnic cohort of 15,886 sequenced participants with recalled adverse childhood events, to study how ACEs and their genotype-environment interactions affect BMI.

Population genetic screening efficiently identifies carriers of autosomal dominant diseases.

Three inherited autosomal dominant conditions-BRCA-related hereditary breast and ovarian cancer (HBOC), Lynch syndrome (LS) and familial hypercholesterolemia (FH)-have been termed the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention Tier 1 (CDCT1) genetic conditions, for which early identification and intervention have a meaningful potential for clinical actionability and a positive impact on public health. In typical medical practice, genetic testing for these conditions is based on personal or family history, ethnic background or other demographic characteristics. In this study of a cohort of 26,906 participants in the Healthy Nevada Project (HNP), we first evaluated whether population screening could efficiently identify carriers of these genetic conditions and, second, we evaluated the impact of genetic risk on health outcomes for these participants.

A Real-Time Multiplexed Microbial Growth Intervalometer for Capturing High-Resolution Growth Curves.

Batch cultures are a low maintenance and routine culturing method in microbiology. Automated tools that measure growth curves from microorganisms grown in traditional laboratory glassware, such as Balch-type tubes, are not commercially available. Here, we present a new MicrobiAl Growth Intervalometer (MAGI) that measures optical density as it correlates to microbial growth by utilizing photo-conduction as opposed to photo-attenuation used by traditional OD measurement equipment.

Visible Light-Induced Sulfonylation/Arylation of Styrenes in a Double Radical Three-Component Photoredox Reaction.

Simultaneous sulfonylation/arylation of styrene derivatives is achieved in a photoredox-catalyzed three-component reaction using visible light. A broad variety of difunctionalized products is accessible in mostly excellent yields and high diastereoselectivity. The developed reaction is scalable and suitable for the modification of styrene-functionalized biomolecules.

Photoredox Alkenylation of Carboxylic Acids and Peptides: Synthesis of Covalent Enzyme Inhibitors.

The synthesis of vinyl sulfones and (α,β-unsaturated) nitriles from carboxylic acids was realized through oxidative decarboxylation with 1,4-dicyanoanthracene as an organic photoredox catalyst. Various types of C-radicals are generated and used to construct three different classes of potential covalent protease inhibitors. The procedure is functional group tolerant and applicable to natural products and druglike scaffolds.

Light-Induced Alkylation of (Hetero)aromatic Nitriles in a Transition-Metal-Free C-C-Bond Metathesis.

A light-induced C-C-σ-bond metathesis was achieved through transition-metal-free activation of an unstrained C(sp)-C(sp)-σ-bond in 1-benzyl-1,2,3,4-tetrahydroisoquinolines. A photoredox-mediated single-electron oxidation of these precursor amines yield radical cations which undergo a homolytic cleavage of a C(sp)-C(sp)-σ-bond rather than the well-known α-C-H-scission. The resulting carbon-centered radicals are used in the ipso-substitution of (hetero)aromatic nitriles proceeding through another single-electron transfer-mediated C-C-bond cleavage and formation.

Transition-Metal-Free Decarboxylative Photoredox Coupling of Carboxylic Acids and Alcohols with Aromatic Nitriles.

A transition-metal-free protocol for the redox-neutral light-induced decarboxylative coupling of carboxylic acids with (hetero)aromatic nitriles at ambient temperature is presented. A broad scope of acids and nitriles is accepted, and alcohols can be coupled in a similar fashion through their oxalate half esters. Various inexpensive sources of UV light and even sunlight can be used to achieve this C-C bond formation proceeding through a free radical mechanism.

Effectiveness of a community-based 3-year advisory program after acquired brain injury.

Objective of this study was to examine the effectiveness of a coordinated, community based 3-year advisory program in 1534 patients with acquired brain injury. Patients and caregivers were offered a coordinated advisory program after discharge from rehabilitation. Patients in the historical control group received standard aftercare.

Electrophysiological correlates of active and passive attentional states after severe traumatic brain injury.

Purpose: To describe functioning and health of patients with neurological conditions in early post-acute rehabilitation facilities and to identify the most common problems using the International Classification of Functioning, Disability and Health (ICF).

Methods: Cross-sectional survey in a convenience sample of patients with neurological conditions requiring rehabilitation in early post-acute facilities. The second-level categories of the ICF were used to collect information on patients' problems.

There is increasing evidence that neuropeptides such as a substance P, neurotrophins or beta-endorphin, an endogenous agonist for mu-opioid receptor, are involved in the pathogenesis of atopic dermatitis in which mental stress and scratching deteriorate the disease. mu-Opioid receptor, a G-protein-coupled receptor, can be downregulated and internalized by agonists and other factors in vitro. In this study, we investigated the regulation of mu-opioid receptor and nerve endings in atopic dermatitis patients.

Non-invasive measurement of the cardiovascular effects of chronic hypoxaemia on dogs living at moderately high altitude.

Pulmonary hypertension is a well-recognised condition in dogs, and, among other mechanisms, is caused by hypoxia. In order to evaluate the effect of chronic hypobaric hypoxia on pulmonary arterial pressure in dogs, a colony of 19 clinically and biochemically healthy Greenland sled dogs living permanently at at least 2300 m above sea level (altitude dogs) and 10 clinically healthy Greenland sled dogs living at 700 to 900 m above sea level (control dogs) were examined. Investigations were made of the dogs' packed-cell volume, venous and arterial blood gases, electrocardiogram, blood pressure and echocardiograph, including the calculation of pulmonary arterial pressure by Doppler examination of tricuspid regurgitation.

Multisensory integration after traumatic brain injury: a reaction time study between pairings of vision, touch and audition.

Traumatic brain injury (TBI) frequently results in deficits in attention and speed of information processing. In order to disentangle the influence of sensory-specific factors and the role of cross-modal integration from the supra-modal aspects of cognitive slowing, the present reaction time (RT) study was designed. Simple and choice RT to pairings of visual, auditory and tactile stimuli were measured in 35 TBI patients and 35 matched controls.

Electrophysiological correlates of visual impairments after traumatic brain injury.

Our aims were to investigate: (i) the VEP correlates of functional visual impairments following traumatic brain injury (TBI), in particular of the reduced spatial form perception; and (ii) the VEP correlates of visual sustained arousal in TBI patients. We used two approaches: (i) the analysis of latency and amplitude of the peaks; and (ii) the study of the correlations among the latencies of the peaks as a label of temporal synchronization. Determination of kallikrein by radioimmunoassay in human body fluids.

A sensitive and specific radioimmunoassay for human urinary kallikrein was developed, which allows tissue kallikrein determination in human urine, saliva, pancreatic juice, bile and sweat. In several body fluids a kallikrein-like antigen was found, but not in gastric juice and breast milk. According to gel filtration studies, complex formation of kallikrein with serum proteins or different molecular weight forms of kallikrein in serum and urine may be assumed.
