Individuals with Down Syndrome (DS) are commonly characterized by unique neurocognitive and neurobehavioural profiles that emerge within specific stages in the developmental continuum. A plethora of studies have confirmed DS's relationship to premature aging and subsequent cognitive decline. Due to having three copies of the amyloid precursor protein (APP) gene which results in amyloid-beta plaque deposition, the cognitive decline often resembles the decline observed in Alzheimer's disease.

Background: The picosecond Alexandrite laser has shown increased efficacy in tattoo removal in comparison to Q-switched lasers. However, bulla formation is a well-known and expected side effect of this novel treatment and causes patient discomfort.

Background: Lupus miliaris disseminatus faciei (LMDF) is a rare granulomatous disease. It presents as red-brown papules on the face that can resolve with scarring. LMDF is often resistant to treatment.

Recurrent paraneoplastic wells syndrome in a patient with metastatic renal cell cancer.

A 58-year-old man with a history of hyperlipidemia and hypertension presented to the dermatology clinic with a 3-month history of a sudden onset, progressively worsening pruritic eruption involving the torso and extremities. Prior treatment included azithromycin and oral and intramuscular steroids, without improvement. Laboratory results demonstrated a serum eosinophil count of 7x10(3)/uL (normal 0-4).

The CERN Axion Solar Telescope has finished its search for solar axions with (3)He buffer gas, covering the search range 0.64 eV ≲ ma ≲ 1.17 eV.

Preterm infant with a late presentation of blueberry muffin lesions secondary to recombinant erythropoietin.

Our patient is a 26-week-old preterm female infant delivered by caesarean section secondary to severe maternal preeclampsia who had been receiving subcutaneous recombinant erythropoietin (r-EPO) for anemia of prematurity. At 8 weeks of age after 8 doses of r-EPO, the infant developed numerous non-blanching erythematous macules and patches located on the back, posterior shoulder, and posterior arms, concerning for late-onset blueberry muffin lesions. Biopsy of the lesions confirmed dermal hematopoiesis.

The CERN Axion Solar Telescope (CAST) has extended its search for solar axions by using (3)He as a buffer gas. At T=1.8 K this allows for larger pressure settings and hence sensitivity to higher axion masses than our previous measurements with (4)He.

Background: Tetanus (lockjaw) is a rare disease in developed countries.

Methods: An otorhinolaryngologist can be the first physician to see a patient with tetanus. In our department, we have seen 10 such cases presenting with head and neck symptoms.

Searching for decaying axionlike dark matter from clusters of galaxies.

We constrain the lifetime of radiatively decaying dark matter in clusters of galaxies inspired by generic Kaluza-Klein axions, which have been invoked as a possible explanation for the solar coronal x-ray emission. These particles can be produced inside stars and remain confined by the gravitational potential of clusters. By analyzing x-ray observations of merging clusters, where gravitational lensing observations have identified massive, baryon poor structures, we derive the first cosmological lifetime constraint on this kind of particles of tau > or = 10(23) sec.

Electrocardiographic changes with segmental akinesia after chloral hydrate overdose.

We report a case of deliberate ingestion of 12.5 g chloral hydrate in a 25-year-old psychiatric patient. Coma and life-threatening ventricular dysrhythmias were observed soon after ingestion.

First results from the CERN axion solar telescope.

Hypothetical axionlike particles with a two-photon interaction would be produced in the sun by the Primakoff process. In a laboratory magnetic field ("axion helioscope"), they would be transformed into x-rays with energies of a few keV. Using a decommissioned Large Hadron Collider test magnet, the CERN Axion Solar Telescope ran for about 6 months during 2003.

Angiotensin-converting enzyme inhibitors and angiotensin II receptor antagonists.

The use of angiotensin-converting enzyme inhibitors (ACEIs) has been implicated in many cases of angioedema, but, given the potential mechanism of this complication, it was not expected to be caused by angiotensin II receptor blockers (ARBs). However, in the past few years, scattered reports of angioedema associated with ARBs have appeared in the medical literature. The decision to withdraw or withhold life supporting treatment in moribund patients is difficult under any circumstances. When the patient becomes incompetent to clarify their wishes regarding continued maintenance in long-term facilities, surrogates sometimes cannot agree, further clouding the issue. We examine a case where the State's interests come into play, forcing a controversial resolution.

Lump sensation in the throat caused by tumors in the preepiglottic space.

Lump sensation in the throat is a common symptom, which accounts for 4% of first patient visits to Otorhinolaryngologic clinics. The etiology includes abnormalities of the thyroid gland, cysts, tumors and chronic infections of the pharynx, larynx, esophagus and tongue base, gastroesophageal reflux and anxiety disorders. In this article we describe two rare cases of lump sensation caused by masses in the preepiglottic space and we stress the importance of thorough investigation to exclude any possible non functional causes.
