Continuous monitoring of high-risk neonates is essential for the timely management of medical conditions. However, the current reliance on wearable or contact sensor technologies for vital sign monitoring often leads to complications including discomfort, skin damage, and infections which can impede medical management, nursing care, and parental bonding. Moreover, the dependence on multiple devices is problematic since they are not interconnected or time-synchronized, use a variety of different wires and probes/sensors, and are designed based on adult specifications.

  • Accessible contraception is crucial for women's health, but in the UK, only 55% of pregnancies are planned, with lower usage among ethnic minority women due to barriers like inadequate information and concerns about side effects.
  • A systematic review of studies on ethnic minority women's experiences with contraception revealed four main themes: contraceptive knowledge, beliefs, family influence, and healthcare services.
  • Findings indicate that ethnic minority women share common concerns about side effects, prefer female healthcare providers, and encounter unique challenges, emphasizing the need for culturally sensitive healthcare and better understanding of hormonal hesitancy.

The Good Behavior Game (GBG) is an effective procedure for reducing disruptive classroom behavior. Students in three fifth-grade classes selected the rules of the GBG and then experienced the GBG with different forms of feedback for rule violations (vocal and visual, vocal only, visual only, no feedback). Following an initial baseline, the four feedback versions of the GBG and a baseline condition were alternated across sessions in a multielement design.

Purpose: The purpose of the study was to describe ocular blood flow changes in eyes affected by a carotid-cavernous fistula (CCF) using laser speckle flowgraphy. We hypothesized that imaging blood flow velocity waveforms in the retinal arterioles and venules simultaneously would reveal specific characteristics of an arteriovenous (AV) connection.

Design: The study was an observational case series, with a retrospective case-control analysis.

Background: Although underserved populations- including those from ethnic minority communities and those living in poverty-have worse health and poorer healthcare experiences, most primary care research does not fairly reflect these groups. Patient and public involvement (PPI) is usually embedded within research studies in the United Kingdom (UK), but often fails to represent underserved populations. This study worked with patient and public contributors and local community leaders, situated in a socio-economically deprived and ethnically diverse urban area, to explore under-representation in primary healthcare research.

Accurate segmentation of retinal layers in optical coherence tomography (OCT) images is critical for assessing diseases that affect the optic nerve, but existing automated algorithms often fail when pathology causes irregular layer topology, such as extreme thinning of the ganglion cell-inner plexiform layer (GCIPL). Deep LOGISMOS, a hybrid approach that combines the strengths of deep learning and 3D graph search to overcome their limitations, was developed to improve the accuracy, robustness and generalizability of retinal layer segmentation. The method was trained on 124 OCT volumes from both eyes of 31 non-arteritic anterior ischemic optic neuropathy (NAION) patients and tested on three cross-sectional datasets with available reference tracings: Test-NAION (40 volumes from both eyes of 20 NAION subjects), Test-G (29 volumes from 29 glaucoma subjects/eyes), and Test-JHU (35 volumes from 21 multiple sclerosis and 14 control subjects/eyes) and one longitudinal dataset without reference tracings: Test-G-L (155 volumes from 15 glaucoma patients/eyes).

There is optimism that cancer drug resistance can be addressed through appropriate combination therapy, but success requires understanding the growing complexity of resistance mechanisms, including the evolution and population dynamics of drug-sensitive and drug-resistant clones over time. Using DNA barcoding to trace individual prostate tumor cells , we find that the evolutionary path to acquired resistance to androgen receptor signaling inhibition (ARSI) is dependent on the timing of treatment. In established tumors, resistance occurs through polyclonal adaptation of drug-sensitive clones, despite the presence of rare subclones with known, pre-existing ARSI resistance.

Purpose: To visualize and quantify structural patterns of optic nerve edema encountered in papilledema during treatment.

Methods: A novel bi-channel deep-learning variational autoencoder (biVAE) model was trained using 1498 optical coherence tomography (OCT) scans of 125 subjects over time from the Idiopathic Intracranial Hypertension Treatment Trial (IIHTT) and 791 OCT scans of 96 control subjects from the University of Iowa. An independent test dataset of 70 eyes from 70 papilledema subjects was used to evaluate the ability of the biVAE model to quantify and reconstruct the papilledema spatial patterns from input OCT scans using only two variables.

Purpose: To assess the validity of visual field (VF) results from the Iowa Head-Mounted Display (HMD) Open-Source Perimeter and to test the hypothesis that VF defects and test-retest repeatability are similar between the HMD and Octopus 900 perimeters.

Methods: We tested 20 healthy and nine glaucoma patients on the HMD and Octopus 900 perimeters using the Open Perimetry Interface platform with size V stimuli, a custom grid spanning the central 26° of the VF, and a ZEST thresholding algorithm. Historical data from the Humphrey Field Analyzer (HFA) were also analyzed.

Article Synopsis
  • A study assessed the sexual and reproductive healthcare needs of 50 young adults with sickle cell disease (SCD) transitioning to adult care between March 2019 and July 2020.
  • Only 8% of participants expressed a desire to become pregnant in the next year, while 46% indicated they had unmet sexual and reproductive health needs, especially those not employed full-time.
  • The research found that having an obstetrician-gynecologist significantly increased contraceptive use, pointing to the importance of tailored reproductive healthcare for young adults with SCD.

Non-traumatic ectopia lentis can be isolated or herald an underlying multisystemic disorder. Technological advances have revolutionized genetic testing for many ophthalmic disorders, and this study aims to provide insights into the clinical utility of genetic analysis in paediatric ectopia lentis. Children that underwent lens extraction for ectopia lentis between 2013 and 2017 were identified, and gene panel testing findings and surgical outcomes were collected.

A man in his 50s underwent vitrectomy surgery for a macular off retinal detachment which was complicated by intraoperative hypotony and suprachoroidal haemorrhage, resulting in the use of silicone oil tamponade. Postoperatively, several retained cysts of fluid were seen underneath the retina, one of which was large and close to the macular. Imaging was used to determine that this was likely retained silicone oil.

Background: Long-acting reversible contraceptives (LARCs) are highly effective. In primary care, LARCs are prescribed less frequently than user-dependent contraceptives despite higher efficacy rates. Unplanned pregnancies are rising in the UK, and LARCs may have a role in reducing these through and redressing inequitable contraceptive access.

Euglenoids (Euglenida) are unicellular flagellates possessing exceptionally wide geographical and ecological distribution. Euglenoids combine a biotechnological potential with a unique position in the eukaryotic tree of life. In large part these microbes owe this success to diverse genetics including secondary endosymbiosis and likely additional sources of genes.
