Aims: This study aimed to explore the association between frailty and pre-frailty in people living with human immunodeficiency virus (PLWHIV), focusing on their oral health-related quality of life (OHRQoL) and health-related quality of life (HRQoL).

Materials And Methods: A cross-sectional study was conducted with 184 PLWHIV. Frailty status was assessed using Fried's frailty criteria, categorizing participants as robust, pre-frail, or frail.

Lesions of monkeypox affect the oral mucosa in approximately 70% of infected patients and reported as the first clinical sign of the disease, manifesting as macules, papules, vesicles, or blisters, which are highly contagious and are followed by the appearance of lesions on the face and extremities of the body. These lesions have clinical aspects like recurrent herpes simplex, herpes zoster, and secondary syphilis and should be part of differential diagnoses. The clinical course after initial oral manifestation is shown to support the clinical diagnosis.

Introduction: Experimental evidence supports the hypothesis of reciprocal influence between neural systems involved in cognition and central pain processing circuits. Furthermore, studies have demonstrated bidirectional communication between central pain processing areas and the immune system, leading to changes in behaviour, sensory perception, mood, and cognition. However, the academic community has not yet reached a consensus on whether effective analgesic interventions can mitigate or reverse cognitive deterioration.

Background: Despite the critical importance of humanized healthcare for transgender individuals, no existing measures specifically assess care humanization for this population. The Transgender Health Care Humanization Scale (THcH Scale) was developed to address this gap, yet it initially lacked confirmatory validation. This study validates the Transgender THcH scale for evaluating healthcare providers' sensitivity towards transgender patients.

Introduction: Human T-cell lymphotropic virus type 1 (HTLV-1) is endemic to Brazil, and there is still no specific treatment for these patients. The literature shows that few studies have described the cognitive impairment associated with an HTLV-1 infection, with none of them examining the population of Salvador, where there are approximately forty thousand people infected with the virus.

Objectives: To determine the prevalence of cognitive impairment among individuals with HTLV-1.

Article Synopsis
  • * This research involved a systematic review of 14 randomized controlled trials, including 645 patients, where various forms of NP like trigeminal neuralgia and diabetic polyneuropathy were studied using BT-A at different doses.
  • * The conclusion suggests that BT-A shows promise for treating NP, and encourages future studies to focus on more precise dosage and administration methods for better results.

Article Synopsis
  • This study evaluates the effectiveness of botulinum toxin type A (BT-A) for treating tennis elbow through a review of randomized clinical trials up until June 2024.
  • Seven trials involving 381 middle-aged patients showed that BT-A significantly reduced pain compared to placebo at two to twelve weeks, but grip strength remained similar between both groups.
  • The study concludes that while BT-A helps alleviate pain in tennis elbow, more research is required for definitive proof of its safety and effectiveness due to limitations in the current studies.

Article Synopsis
  • Complex Regional Pain Syndrome (CRPS) involves symptoms like pain, swelling, and movement issues, and this study investigates the effectiveness of botulinum toxin type A (BoNT-A) as a treatment.
  • The research followed PRISMA guidelines and included three randomized controlled trials with 64 patients, comparing BoNT-A to a placebo, focusing on pain relief outcomes.
  • Results indicate BoNT-A may help reduce CRPS pain, especially when combined with lumbar sympathetic blockade, but more extensive studies are needed to confirm its safety and efficacy, particularly for local application methods which still require further examination.

HIV/AIDS-Targeted Quality of Life (HAT-QOL) is an instrument for evaluating health-related quality of life (HRQOL) in people living with HIV (PLWHIV). This has been adapted into Brazilian Portuguese, but its dimensional structure has not been analyzed. This study evaluated the psychometric properties of the Brazilian Portuguese version of the HAT-QOL, using a sample of 319 PLWHIV in Salvador, Brazil.

Article Synopsis
  • This study investigates how cytokines and immune cells interact with prolonged morphine use in patients suffering from chronic neuropathic pain, highlighting a gap in existing research on opioid effects on immunity.
  • Involving 50 patients with chronic low back pain, the research compared those on intrathecal morphine, oral morphine, and non-opioid treatments, analyzing various biological markers like cytokine levels and lymphocyte counts.
  • Findings revealed elevated cytokines in cerebrospinal fluid compared to plasma, and certain correlations indicating how changes in immune responses might relate to morphine dosage and pain intensity, suggesting complex interactions between opioids and immune function.

Untreated HIV infection leads to severe immunodeficiency and can be associated with an accelerated aging process and a higher prevalence of frailty. Systemic changes are known to cause greater oral manifestations and decreased orofacial function. However, there is no investigation on Temporomandibular Disorders (TMD) in this population.

Objective: This systematic literature review aims to evaluate the effectiveness of transdermal opioids in managing cancer pain and their impact on the quality of life (QoL) of patients.

Data Sources: A systematic literature review conducted following the PRISMA protocol, focusing on randomized clinical trials found in the Lilacs, Embase, PubMed, and SciELO databases over the last 20 years.

Study Selection And Data Extraction: We included randomized clinical trials, published in English, Portuguese, or Spanish, which assessed the impact of transdermal opioids on the QoL.

Background: Currently, integrase inhibitors (INIs)-based ART regimens are the preferred initial therapy for AIDS patients. There is scarce information on the use of dolutegravir (DTG) among late-presenter people living with HIV (PLHIV).

Objectives: To compare the effect of DTG- or efavirenz (EFV)-based regimens on the outcomes of patients with advanced AIDS.

Purpose: Stigma and discrimination against transgender people can lead to their segregation. Fighting stigma and discrimination is a crucial strategy to expand access to health services. The goals of the present study were to develop and validate a transgender health care humanization scale (THcH scale) to evaluate the perception of humanization in health care for transgender individuals.

Objective:  Sickle cell disease (SCD) is a common inherited disease, and is characterized by a genetic modification that determines the production of a hemoglobin with altered morphology. This anatomical change of hemoglobin leads to vaso-occlusive disorders and premature hemolysis of the cell, causing chronic anemia and bone marrow hyperplasia due to increased hematopoietic demand. As a consequence, several skeletal changes are reported in the skull, spine, ribs, pelvis, femur, and metatarsals.

Background: Since the beginning of the COVID-19 pandemic, the number of medical appointments and the offer and use of oral health services have decreased sharply with the lockdown period. Restriction to regular dental care can increase the risk of oral diseases, capable of affecting general health and oral health-related quality of life, particularly among medically compromised patients. This study aimed to assess health-related quality of life (HRQoL) and oral health-related quality of life (OHRQoL) of patients with non-alcoholic liver disease (NAFLD) before and during the COVID-19 pandemic.
