This study aimed to assess the interactive effects of CO-driven acidification, temperature rise, and PAHs toxicity on meiobenthic communities. Laboratory microcosms were established in a full factorial experimental design, manipulating temperature (25 °C and 27 °C), pH (8.1 and 7.

Weathering stages included emulsified oil that reached the coast (OM) and oil collected 50 days later deposited on beach sand (OS) or adhered to shore rocks (OR). Parent and alkylated naphthalenes decreased whereas phenanthrenes increased from less weathered WAF-OM to more weathered WAF-OS and WAF-OR.

Oceanic oil spills present significant ecological risks that have the potential to contaminate extensive areas, including coastal regions. The occurrence of the 2019 oil spill event in Brazil resulted in over 3000 km of contaminated beaches and shorelines. While assessing the impact on benthic and beach ecosystems is relatively straightforward due to direct accessibility, evaluating the ecotoxicological effects of open ocean oil spills on the pelagic community is a complex task.

This study aimed to investigate whether sea turtles were impacted by this oil disaster, correlating the oil found inside feces with a sandy-oiled sample collected on the beach some days after the accident. The fecal samples were collected in the upper mid-littoral reef areas during three consecutive days in February 2020.

This study assessed the chemical contamination and toxicity of sediments collected from affected reef areas during two sampling surveys conducted 17 and 24 months after the peak of oil slick inputs. Our results indicated that neither PAH levels nor measured toxicity showed a significant contribution from the spilled oil, with concentrations and biological effects indistinguishable from those in unaffected areas.

Between August and September 2022, tar balls were collected in the northeastern coast of Brazil and analyzed. Nearly 90 % of the oils were colonized by barnacles, polychaetes, decapods, and algae.

Rural and isolated communities traditionally lack adequate water treatment and distribution systems, and water quality assessment often does not include radioactivity measurement. Here we present, for the first time, the results of Rn measurements and the evaluation of the associated dose in groundwaters of rural communities in a semiarid area in Paraiba State, Brazil. Water samples were analysed using a low-level liquid scintillation spectrometer (LSS).

The radiometric monitoring carried out in the present study allowed the discovery of anomalous granite outcrops in natural radionuclides in the rural area of São Mamede in the state of Paraíba, Brazil. The characterisation study made it possible to determine maximum specific concentrations of approximately 199 kBq kg-1 of 238U, 85 kBq kg-1 of 226Ra, 26 kBq kg-1 of 232Th and 24 kBq kg-1 of 40K. Models for environmental dosimetry were applied, which resulted in obtaining the following quantities: radium equivalent (Raeq), indices of external (Hex), internal (Hin) and representative (Iyr) damage, and the effective outdoor dose (HE).

This yeast has been regarded as an important competitor to Saccharomyces cerevisiae in bioethanol production plants in Brazil and several studies have reported its capacity to produce ethanol. However, our current knowledge concerning D.

Environmental radioactivity studies have been allowed establishing radiometric patterns in several area of the earth's crust. The work was conducted through radiometric analyses of regions with high levels of radionuclides and others with no history of anomalies. The research allowed establishing the radiometric profile of soils in the state of Pernambuco, Brazil, using a gamma spectrometry system.

High levels of primordial radionuclides have been reported in soils and rocks of São José de Espinharas, in the state of Paraiba, Brazil. These radionuclides are derived from high concentrations of natural uranium and thorium from a mine in the region. Thus, there is a need for a dosimetric evaluation in the area near the mine and the surrounding cities.

An increase of health problems has been reported in the city of Triunfo, Paraíba, NE Brazil. This pattern has been attributed to environmental radiation since there are uranium deposits in the neighboring municipalities. The present study aimed to carry a radiometric survey in Triunfo to determine effective dose from external outdoor radiation exposure.
