Endourological Management of Renal Stones: A Systematic Review, Bayesian Network Meta-Analysis and Meta-Regression.

Objectives: To compare stone-free rates (SFRs), operative times, and transfusion rates of various endoscopic techniques for kidney stone management.

Methods: A systematic review was performed, identifying studies comparing the different endoscopic techniques in patients with renal stones. Studies were grouped by location and size of stones (lower pole, 1-2 cm, and >2 cm).

Patient assessment of the CAPE: A solution to negative pressure isolation in an emergency department.

Introduction: The Collapsible Aerosolized Particle Enclosure (CAPE) is a negative pressure patient isolation device designed to protect patients and clinicians from aerosolized infectious particles. The CAPE is intended to provide a safe environment for care receipt and delivery when isolation capacity is limited. The goal of this study was to evaluate the acceptability of receiving care in the CAPE from the emergency department (ED) patient perspective.

Linking stomatal size and density to water use efficiency and leaf carbon isotope ratio in juvenile and mature trees.

Water-use efficiency (WUE) is affected by multiple leaf traits, including stomatal morphology. However, the impact of stomatal morphology on WUE across different ontogenetic stages of tree species is not well-documented. Here, we investigated the relationship between stomatal morphology, intrinsic water-use efficiency (iWUE) and leaf carbon isotope ratio (δC).

ADA2 is a lysosomal deoxyadenosine deaminase acting on DNA involved in regulating TLR9-mediated immune sensing of DNA.

Although adenosine deaminase 2 (ADA2) is considered an extracellular ADA, evidence questions the physiological relevance of this activity. Our study reveals that ADA2 localizes within the lysosomes, where it is targeted through modifications of its glycan structures. We show that ADA2 interacts with DNA molecules, altering their sequences by converting deoxyadenosine (dA) to deoxyinosine (dI).

Three-dimensional deformity correction in adolescent idiopathic scoliosis patients: what are the benefits of hybrid apical sublaminar bands versus all-pedicle screws?

The amount of three-dimensional (3D) correction with apical sublaminar band (hybrid-SLB) technique has not been compared to all-pedicle screw instrumentation for adolescent idiopathic scoliosis (AIS) using detailed axial correction metrics or comparable rod types. Our purpose is to compare 3D improvement in AIS deformities following posterior spinal instrumentation and fusion (PSIF) with hybrid-SLB and segmental correction to all-pedicle screw correction. Patients ages 10-18 years with AIS who underwent PSIF between 2015 and 2022 and had preoperative and postoperative EOS imaging were included.

Two AIS Cases, 2 Surgeons, 1 Operating Room, 1 Day: Faster and Safer Than 1 Case in a Day.

Background: To lessen surgical times for patients with adolescent idiopathic scoliosis (AIS) undergoing posterior spinal instrumentation and fusion (PSIF), our department developed a quality improvement initiative where 2 AIS cases were completed in 1 day by the same 2 surgeons operating together in 1 operating room (OR). We describe the results of this initiative, comparing operative times and outcomes to cases of these surgeons operating individually.

Methods: From 2017 to 2023, patients aged 10 to 18 years with AIS undergoing PSIF were prospectively enrolled for "Two Spine Tuesday.

Mapping the scientific knowledge and approaches to defining and measuring hate crime, hate speech, and hate incidents: A systematic review.

Background: The difficulties in defining hate crime, hate incidents and hate speech, and in finding a common conceptual basis constitute a key barrier toward operationalisation in research, policy and programming. Definitions disagree about issues such as the identities that should be protected, the types of behaviours that should be referred to as hateful, and how the 'hate element' should be assessed. The lack of solid conceptual foundations is reflected in the absence of sound data.

Carpal tunnel syndrome and sleep, a systematic review and meta-analysis.

Background: The most common symptom and reason patients seek treatment for carpal tunnel syndrome is lack of sleep. Our purpose was to determine how much sleep-related symptoms of carpal tunnel syndrome improve after carpal tunnel release using validated patient-reported outcome measures (PROMs) and objective sleep data as primary measures of interest.

Methods: A PRISMA-guided literature search was conducted using Ovid MEDLINE, PubMed, Cochrane, and ClinicalTrials.

Worldwide, forests are increasingly exposed to extreme droughts causing tree mortality. Because of the complex nature of the mechanisms involved, various traits have been linked to tree drought responses with contrasting results. This may be due to species-specific strategies in regulating water potential, a process that unfolds in two distinct phases: a first phase until stomatal closure, and a second phase until reaching lethal xylem hydraulic thresholds.

Modelling cell shape in 3D structured environments: A quantitative comparison with experiments.

Cell shape plays a fundamental role in many biological processes, including adhesion, migration, division and development, but it is not clear which shape model best predicts three-dimensional cell shape in structured environments. Here, we compare different modelling approaches with experimental data. The shapes of single mesenchymal cells cultured in custom-made 3D scaffolds were compared by a Fourier method with surfaces that minimize area under the given adhesion and volume constraints.

Pediatric Type I Open Both Bone Forearm Fractures: Predicting Failure of Nonoperative Management.

Background: In recent years, nonoperative treatment of pediatric type I open both bone forearm fractures (OBBFFs) with bedside irrigation, antibiotics, closed reduction, and casting has yielded low infection rates. However, risk factors for failure of type I OBBFF closed reduction have not been well described. Our purpose was to describe management of patients with type I OBBFFs at our institution and determine what factors are associated with failure of closed reduction in this population.

Complete Intraureteral Stents Decrease Urinary Symptoms Compared with Conventional Ureteral Stents: A Systematic Review and Meta-Analysis.

Conventional Double-J ureteral stents (DJSs) can cause adverse kidney and bladder-related symptoms. Complete intraureteral stents (CISs) may reduce bothersome bladder symptoms by reducing foreign material in the bladder.

Frailty as a predictor of postoperative outcomes in neurosurgery: a systematic review.

Introduction: Baseline frailty status has been utilized to predict a wide range of outcomes and guide preoperative decision making in neurosurgery. This systematic review aims to analyze existing literature on the utilization of frailty as a predictor of neurosurgical outcomes.

Immunomodulatory effect of probiotic exopolysaccharides in a porcine in vitro co-culture model mimicking the intestinal environment on ETEC infection.

The aim of this study was to evaluate the immunomodulatory effect of EPS-L26 isolated from the probiotic strain Lactobacillus (Limosilactobacillus) reuteri L26 Biocenol™, in a model of infection with an enterotoxigenic E. coli (ETEC) by establishing monocultures consisting of the IPEC-J2 cell line or monocyte-derived dendritic cells (moDCs) and creating a 3D model of cell co-cultures established with IPEC-J2 cells and moDCs. The immunomodulatory and immunoprotective potential of used EPS-L26 was confirmed in monocultures in an experimental group of pretreated cells, where our study showed that pretreatment of cells with EPS-L26 and subsequent exposure to infection resulted in significantly down-regulated mRNA levels of genes encoding inflammatory cytokines compared to ETEC challenge in single cell cultures (in IPEC-J2, decreased mRNA levels for TNF-α, IL-6, IL-1β, IL-12p35; in moDCs, decreased mRNA levels for IL-1β).

Assessing the agreement between the pneumatic and the flow-centrifuge method for estimating xylem safety in temperate diffuse-porous tree species.

The increasing frequency of global change-type droughts has created a need for fast, accurate and widely applicable techniques for estimating xylem embolism resistance to improve forecasts of future forest changes. We used data from 12 diffuse-porous temperate tree species covering a wide range of xylem safety to compare the pneumatic and flow-centrifuge method, two rapid methods used for constructing xylem vulnerability curves. We evaluated the agreement between parameters estimated with both methods and the sensitivity of pneumatic measurements to the duration of air discharge (AD) measurements.

Powder plasma spheroidization treatment and the characterization of microstructure and mechanical properties of SS 316L powder and L-PBF builds.

A plasma spheroidization treatment was applied to stock stainless steel 316L powder for additive manufacturing. The normal and treated powders were compared both in the powder state as well as in the resulting laser powder bed fusion (L-PBF) builds. The plasma spheroidization process slightly increased treated powder aspect ratio and sphericity and shifted the size distribution to larger diameters relative to the normal powder.

Prospective application of the risk analysis index to measure preoperative frailty in spinal tumor surgery: A single center outcomes analysis.

Introduction: Surgeons are frequently faced with challenging clinical dilemmas evaluating whether the benefits of surgery outweigh the substantial risks routinely encountered with spinal tumor surgery. The Clinical Risk Analysis Index (RAI-C) is a robust frailty tool administered via a patient-friendly questionnaire that strives to augment preoperative risk stratification. The objective of the study was to prospectively measure frailty with RAI-C and track postoperative outcomes after spinal tumor surgery.

Objective: Li-Fraumeni syndrome (LFS) is a pan-cancer predisposition syndrome caused by germline pathogenic variants in the gene TP53. The interpretation of TP53 variants in clinical scenarios outside the classic LFS criteria may be challenging. Here, we report a patient affected by 2 primary cancers at later ages, who harbored a likely pathogenic TP53 at low allele frequency detected in a blood sample.

Addressing controversies in the xylem embolism resistance-vessel diameter relationship.

Although xylem embolism is a key process during drought-induced tree mortality, its relationship to wood anatomy remains debated. While the functional link between bordered pits and embolism resistance is known, there is no direct, mechanistic explanation for the traditional assumption that wider vessels are more vulnerable than narrow ones.
