Article Synopsis
  • Catalpol is a compound from the plant Rehmannia glutinosa that shows antidepressant effects, with notable gender differences where females respond better than males.
  • Recent studies suggest that these effects involve SIRT1, which is involved in brain plasticity and new neuron formation, but the specific mechanisms are still unclear.
  • Experiments using mouse models demonstrated that catalpol enhances SIRT1 activity, leading to more significant antidepressant effects in females, indicating a potential target for understanding gender-specific depression treatments.

Background: Fluoxetine is often used as a well-known first-line antidepressant. However, it is accompanied with hepatogenic injury as its main organ toxicity, thereby limiting its application despite its superior efficacy. Fluoxetine is commonly traditionally used combined with some Chinese antidepressant prescriptions containing Rehmannia glutinosa (Dihuang) for depression therapy and hepatoprotection.

For the first time, this study evaluated the gender differences and mechanisms of the antidepressant effects of raw Rehmanniae Radix(RRR) based on the classic depression model with traditional Chinese medicine syndrome of Yin deficiency and internal heat. The depression model with Yin deficiency and internal heat was established by the widely recognized and applied method of thyroxine induction of the classic depression model with Yin deficiency and internal heat(chronic unpredictable mild stress). Male and female mice were simultaneously treated with RRR.

Article Synopsis
  • - Dioscorea bulbifera L. (RDB) is known for its use as an expectorant and cough suppressant but can cause severe liver toxicity; combining it with Glycyrrhiza uralensis (GRR) juice may help reduce this toxicity while enhancing its therapeutic effects.
  • - The study aimed to identify how GRR juice detoxifies RDB by examining various preparation factors, measuring toxic compounds, and analyzing liver health in mice, while also assessing the expectorant and cough suppressant benefits of the combination.
  • - Results showed that concocting RDB with GRR juice significantly lowered the toxic component diosbulbin B and improved liver enzyme levels, while also maintaining the efficacy of RDB in treating cough and

Mitochondria have many forms and can change their shape through fusion and fission of the outer and inner membranes, called "mitochondrial dynamics". Mitochondrial outer membrane proteins, such as mitochondrial fission protein 1 (FIS1), mitochondrial fission factor (MFF), mitochondrial 98 dynamics proteins of 49 kDa (MiD49), and mitochondrial dynamics proteins of 51 kDa (MiD51), can aggregate at the outer mitochondrial membrane and thus attract Dynamin-related protein 1 (DRP1) from the cytoplasm to the outer mitochondrial membrane, where DRP1 can perform a scissor-like function to cut a complete mitochondrion into two separate mitochondria. Other organelles can promote mitochondrial fission alongside mitochondria.

Rhizoma Dioscoreae Bulbiferae (RDB) was effective on relieving cough and expectorant but accompanied by severe toxicity, especially in hepatotoxicity. A previous study found that processing with Angelicae Sinensis Radix (ASR) reduced RDBinduced hepatotoxicity. However, up to now, the optimized processing process of ASR-processed RDB has not been explored or optimized, and the detoxification mechanism is still unknown.

The efficacy of chimeric antigen receptor (CAR) T is still not optimal for solid tumors, partly due to the lack of T cell infiltration to the tumor site. One promising strategy is to guide T cells through tumor-specific chemokines, provided that the matching chemokine receptors are expressed on T cells. Previous reports showed that, for non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC) patients, the tumor sites express high levels of chemokine CXCL13, whereas CXCR5, the only receptor for CXCL13, is mainly expressed on B cells and follicle helper T cells.

Lung cancer is the most frequent malignant tumor, and non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC) is responsible for substantial mortality worldwide. The small molecule SNX-2112 was recently shown to critically effect the proliferation and apoptosis of tumor cells. Nevertheless, the precise mechanism by which SNX-2112 affects NSCLC remains poorly understood.

The application of traditional chemotherapy drugs for lung cancer has obvious limitations, such as toxic side effects, uncontrolled drug-release, poor bioavailability, and drug-resistance. Thus, to address the limitations of free drugs and improve treatment effects, we developed novel T7 peptide-modified nanoparticles (T7-CMCS-BAPE, CBT) based on carboxymethyl chitosan (CMCS), which is capable of targeted binding to the transferrin receptor (TfR) expressed on lung cancer cells and precisely regulating drug-release according to the pH value and reactive oxygen species (ROS) level. The results showed that the drug-loading content of docetaxel (DTX) and curcumin (CUR) was approximately 7.

Lung adenocarcinoma (LUAD) has high incidence and mortality rates worldwide; however, its detailed molecular pathology remains unclear. Although circRNAs have gradually been identified as molecules that are differentially expressed in tumors and play key roles in tumor progression, their role in LUAD is poorly understood. Through microarray analysis, we obtained the circRNA expression profile of LUAD and found that circ-HMGA2 (hsa_circ_0027446), a novel RNA, is highly expressed in LUAD.

Background: Although single-drug chemotherapy is still an effective treatment for esophageal cancer, its long-term application is limited by severe side-effects, poor bioavailability, and drug-resistance. Increasing attention has been paid to nanomedicines because of their good biological safety, targeting capabilities, and high-efficiency loading of multiple drugs. Herein, we have developed a novel T7 peptide-modified pH-responsive targeting nanosystem co-loaded with docetaxel and curcumin for the treatment of esophageal cancer.

Studies have demonstrated that kallikrein-associated peptidase 11 (KLK11) is dysregulated in various cancers. However, the potential roles of KLK11 in esophageal squamous cell carcinoma (ESCC) are still unknown. In our study, we found that the expression of KLK11 in advanced ESCC was significantly down regulated than that in the adjacent tissues, and patients with higher KLK11 expression had markedly increased overall survival rates compared with those with lower KLK11 expression.
