Ninety-nine patients with carcinoma of the vulva were referred to the Gynaecologic Oncology Unit, Royal Brisbane Hospital, over 10 years. Ninety of these patients had a squamous cell carcinoma (SCC). They were assessed by the 1969 FIGO clinical staging.

Allele and genotype frequencies for British Caucasian, Afro-Caribbean and Asian populations were determined for a total of over 600 unrelated individuals at the HLA-DQ alpha locus. These were analysed by polymerase chain reaction amplification of the DNA followed by hybridisation to allele specific oligonucleotide probes in a reversed dot-blot test. Six different alleles were detected and the allele distributions for the 3 populations analysed displayed significant differences.

Renal ultrasonography is an established, reliable means of evaluating the consistency of renal masses. In a retrospective evaluation of 136 proved cases renal ultrasonography was 95 per cent accurate in distinguishing normal from pathological renal masses, 85 per cent accurate in diagnosing uncomplicated cysts and 100 per cent accurate in identifying complicated cysts, polycystic disease, extrarenal lesions and solid or partially solid neoplasms. Ultrasonography was useful in directing the diagnostic examination and in determining which patients should undergo further, more invasive diagnostic procedures.

During the winter season (1 April-31 August) of 1972, 2529 sporting injuries were treated in Wellington and Hutt Accident and Emergency Departments. A computerised analysis was made of the answers to a questionnaire filled out by each patient. Over 90 percent occurred playing major team sports, the majority while playing rugby (57 percent).

2529 injured sportsmen were treated at the Hutt and Wellington accident and emergency departments from 1 April to 31 August 1972. Almost two-thirds (62 percent) of these injuries were sustained during Saturday games, but only one-third (36.7 percent) of those injured presented on Saturdays.
