Background: Pulmonary endarterectomy (PEA) is the treatment of choice for chronic thromboembolic pulmonary hypertension (CTEPH), while balloon pulmonary angioplasty (BPA) is an alternative for inoperable patients. We aimed to compare right ventricular (RV) remodelling and late survival after PEA and BPA.

Methods: In this prospective observational cohort study, we performed echocardiography at baseline and follow-up in patients with CTEPH treated with PEA (n=54) or BPA (n=44) between 2011 and 2022.

Moderate hypothermia has been used to improve outcomes in comatose out-of-hospital cardiac arrest survivors during the past two decades, although the effects remain controversial. We have recently shown in an experimental study that myocardial electrophysiological and mechanical relationships were altered during moderate hypothermia. Electromechanical window positivity increased, and electrical dispersion of repolarization decreased, both of which are changes associated with decreased arrhythmogenicity in clinical conditions.

Article Synopsis
  • The study assessed the prevalence of mitral annulus disjunction (MAD) in patients with Marfan syndrome (MFS) and Loeys-Dietz syndrome (LDS), finding a 41% prevalence among 168 patients.
  • It also discovered that patients with MAD experienced aortic events at a younger age and had a larger MAD distance compared to those without MAD.
  • The findings suggest that MAD is indicative of severe disease and highlight the importance of screening for MAD in patients with MFS and LDS for better surgical planning and clinical follow-up.

Objective: : The Symmetry proximal connector device was introduced as a facilitator for construction of proximal anastomosis in coronary bypass surgery. Use of the connector made it unnecessary to clamp the ascending aorta. Early results were promising, but a controlled study performed in our center demonstrated poor angiographic patency of saphenous veins attached with the connector.

Objective: Although health status after coronary artery bypass grafting improves at the group level, individual outcomes demonstrate variation. We aimed to evaluate relative importances of changes in cardiac and cognitive function and symptom status regarding physical and mental health at 1 year after coronary artery bypass grafting.

Methods: Outcomes in multivariable regression analysis (n = 86) were self-reported physical and mental health (Medical Outcomes Study 36-Item Short Form) at 12 months' follow-up, adjusting for baseline.

Background: Patients who have a carotid stenosis and suffer a TIA have a high risk of stroke shortly afterwards, and should be offered prophylactic surgery within 2 weeks. We present the results for treatment of carotid stenosis from Oslo University Hospital, Rikshospitalet in the period 2001-2008.

Material And Methods: The material comprises all patients treated for carotid stenosis, with either carotid thrombendarterectomy (CEA) or endovascular stenting, in the period 2001-2008.

Background: The purpose of this study was to evaluate the role of intracoronary shunt during off-pump coronary artery bypass surgery.

Methods: Fifty-six patients undergoing off-pump coronary artery bypass using the left internal mammary artery to bypass the left anterior descending coronary artery were randomly assigned to have the bypass performed with intracoronary shunt or by occlusive snaring. Ischemia during grafting was monitored by tissue Doppler.

Background: Intraoperative quality assessment in coronary artery bypass surgery confirms graft patency and enables revision of failing grafts. The aim of this study was to evaluate graft quality intraoperatively by epicardial ultrasonography and to compare this technique with transit time flow measurements and intraoperative angiography, and to evaluate the ability of these methods to predict long-term patency as described by follow-up angiography.

Methods: Thirty-nine patients with mean age of 66 years (SD 9.

Background: Aortic aneurysms are common vascular conditions that cause considerable morbidity and mortality. Understanding of the mechanisms involved in the pathogenesis of the condition remains limited. Recently, infection has been suggested as possible contributor in the development of the disease.

Background: After more than a decade of experience with off-pump coronary bypass surgery, still no consensus exists concerning its benefit on clinical outcome compared to the on-pump technique. In this 12-month follow-up, we compare off-pump and on-pump surgery on the appearance of graft patency, myocardial function, and clinical outcome.

Methods: One hundred twenty patients were randomized to off-pump or on-pump coronary surgery.

Objective: The use of aortic connector systems for proximal vein grafts in off-pump coronary artery bypass grafting might minimize aortic manipulation by eliminating the need for partial aortic clamping. The objective of this study was to asses whether use of a Symmetry connector (St Jude Medical, Inc, St Paul, Minn) reduced intraoperative cerebral embolization.

Methods: Thirty-two consecutive patients underwent off-pump coronary artery bypass grafting.

Background: The proper management strategy for patients with combined carotid and cardiac disease remains unsettled. It is controversial whether the operations should be synchronous, staged or reversed staged, and most publications also lack conservatively treated control groups. The role of endovascular treatment in this situation has not been documented.

Background: Aortic aneurysms affect an increasing number of elderly patients and cause considerable morbidity and mortality. The understanding of the mechanisms involved in the pathogenesis of aortic aneurysms is unclear and little is known about the role of microorganisms in the development of the condition. The aim of the present study was to examine aortic aneurysm samples for the presence of four putative periodontal pathogens: Actinobacillus actinomycetemcomitans, Treponema denticola, Tannerella forsythensis, and Porphyromonas gingivalis.

Background: Clinical experience with off-pump coronary artery bypass surgery raises the question of a patient experienced benefit compared with on-pump surgery. This prospective and randomized study compared patient-reported outcome between surgical groups, as change scores at 3 months after surgery and longitudinally as time-averaged change from baseline through the first year after surgery.

Methods: In all, 120 patients were randomly assigned to on- or off-pump coronary artery surgery.

Low-molecular-weight heparin and acetyl salicylic acid have become an established treatment for unstable angina. A retrospective study on our database of one year was carried out to see what impact preoperative low-molecular-weight heparin versus none had on the postoperative course of 473 patients having coronary surgery exclusively. Apart from the fact that the low-molecular-weight heparin patients had a higher New York Heart Association classification and marginally more grafts, longer bypass and cross-clamp time, the preoperative characteristics and surgery of the two groups were similar.
