Electrochemical two-electron water oxidation reaction (2e-WOR) provides a promising alternative route for hydrogen peroxide (HO) production, where the design of earth abundant and environmentally friendly electrocatalysts with both high selectivity and production rate is crucial. Here we report the synthesis of ZnO nanoparticles embedded in hollow carbon fiber membrane as efficient 2e-WOR electrocatalyst by a metal-organic framework engaged electrospinning-pyrolysis method. The resultant ZnO@carbon composite fiber exhibits a foam-like hierarchical structure composed of interconnected hollow carbon nanocubes encapsulated with oxygen vacancy rich ZnO nanocrystals.

The initiation and development of storage roots (SRs) are intricately regulated by a transcriptional regulatory network. One key challenge is to accurately pinpoint the tipping point during the transition from pre-swelling to SRs and to identify the core regulators governing such a critical transition. To solve this problem, we performed a dynamic network biomarker (DNB) analysis of transcriptomic dynamics during root development in Ipomoea batatas (sweet potato).

Being sessile, plants have evolved sophisticated mechanisms to balance between growth and defense to survive in the harsh environment. The transition from growth to defense is commonly achieved by factors, such as protein kinases (PKs) and transcription factors, that initiate signal transduction and regulate specialized metabolism. Plants produce an array of lineage-specific specialized metabolites for chemical defense and stress tolerance.

Background: In neutral or alkaline soils, iron (Fe) easily forms insoluble complexes, which makes it difficult for plants to utilize Fe in the soil for nutrition. Polyester sulfur-coated urea (PSCU) is a novel controlled-release fertilizer widely used in China and some foreign countries, and it has been proven that sulfur film from controlled-release fertilizers can significantly improve the activation of Fe and other elements in the soil. However, few studies have focused on the effects of PSCU application on Fe accumulation in rice grain in alkaline soils.

The global rise and spread of antibiotic resistance greatly challenge the treatment of bacterial infections. Wastewater treatment plants (WWTPs) harbor and discharge antibiotic resistance genes (ARGs) as environmental contaminants. However, the knowledge gap on the host identity, activity, and functionality of ARGs limits transmission and health risk assessment of the WWTP resistome.

Mainstream anaerobic ammonium oxidation (anammox) represents one of the most promising energy-efficient mechanisms of fixed nitrogen elimination from wastewaters. However, little is known about the exact processes and drivers of microbial community assembly within the complex microbial biofilms that support anammox in engineered ecosystems. Here, we followed anammox biofilm development on fresh carriers in an established 8m mainstream anammox reactor that is exposed to seasonal temperature changes (~25-12°C) and varying NH concentrations (5-25 mg/L).

In most synthetic nanoreactor systems, catalysed products do not promptly diffuse away from the nanoreactor, which leads to lower than expected catalytic efficiencies. To address the diffusion problem, transient polymer micelle nanoreactor systems were achieved using 1-ethyl-3-(3-dimethylaminopropyl)carbodiimide (EDC) as the fuel and activated esters as the energy dissipating units. These demonstrated pathway-dependent catalytic properties for transient micelles: product inhibition was observed or efficiently eliminated depending on EDC reloading in the metastable stage or after full dissipation for transient micelles.

Seed germination is regulated by multiple phytohormones, including gibberellins (GAs) and brassinosteroids (BRs); however, the molecular mechanism underlying GA and BR co-induced seed germination is not well elucidated. We demonstrated that BRs induce seed germination through promoting testa and endosperm rupture in Arabidopsis. BRs promote cell elongation, rather than cell division, at the hypocotyl-radicle transition region of the embryonic axis during endosperm rupture.
