Calycosin, the main extract from the traditional Chinese medicine (TCM) Astragalus membranaceus, has demonstrated anti-osteoporotic properties in ovariectomized (OVX) mice. However, the specific pathways through which it prevents osteoporosis remain unexplored. This study aimed to investigate the pathways by which calycosin promotes autophagy in bone marrow mesenchymal stem cells (BMSCs) and alleviates ovariectomy-induced osteoporosis.

Carbon-based microwave absorption materials have garnered widespread attention as lightweight and efficient wave absorbers, emerging as a prominent focus in the field of functional materials research. In this work, FeNi nanoparticles, synthesized in situ within graphite interlayers, were employed as catalysts to grow carbon nanofibers in situ via intercalation chemical vapor deposition (CVD). We discovered that amorphous carbon nanofibers (CNFs) can exfoliate and separate highly conductive graphite nanosheets (GNS) from the interlayers.

Human papillomavirus (HPV) is a major global health issue and is recognized as the leading cause of cervical cancer. While prophylactic vaccination programs have led to substantial reductions in both HPV infection rates and cervical cancer incidence, considerable burdens of HPV-related diseases persist, particularly in developing countries with inadequate vaccine coverage and uptake. The development of therapeutic vaccines for HPV represents an emerging strategy that has the potential to bolster the fight against cervical cancer.

The aim of this study was to evaluate the mechanical properties and degree of conversion of a novel 3D-printing model resin and compare it to eight commercially available model resins. An experimental resin formulated by our proprietary resin technology along with DentaModel, NextDent 2, KeyModel Ultra, Rodin Model, Die and Model 2, DMR III, LCD Grey, and Grey Resin were used in this study. Parallelepiped specimens (2 × 2 × 25 mm, n = 5) were printed and measured for their flexural strength (FS), flexural modulus (FM), and modulus of resilience (MR) in accordance with ISO-4049.

Coarse roots represent a globally important belowground carbon pool, but the factors controlling coarse root decomposition rates remain poorly understood relative to other plant biomass components. We compiled the most comprehensive dataset of coarse root decomposition data including 148 observations from 60 woody species, and linked coarse root decomposition rates to plant traits, phylogeny and climate to address questions of the dominant controls on coarse root decomposition. We found that decomposition rates increased with mean annual temperature, root nitrogen and phosphorus concentrations.

Objectives: The purpose of this study was to evaluate the performance of urinary C-C motif chemokine ligand 14 (CCL14) and the renal resistive index (RI) in predicting persistent AKI in unselected critically ill patients.

Methods: This prospective observational study was conducted in a tertiary hospital's general intensive care unit (ICU). Consecutive adults who were admitted to the ICU were enrolled, with a primary endpoint of AKI lasting 48 h or longer.

Carbon fiber-reinforced composites have been widely used in the aerospace industry because of their superior comprehensive performance, including high strength, low density, fatigue resistance, long service life, etc. The interface between the fiber reinforcement and the matrix is one of the key factors that determines the performance of the composites. The construction of covalent bonding connections between the components has proven to be an effective strategy for improving the interfacial bonding strength but always reduces the toughness.

Circulating tumor cells (CTCs) are cancer cells that detach from the primary tumor and enter the bloodstream, where they can seed new metastatic lesions in distant organs. CTCs are often associated with white blood cells (WBCs), especially neutrophils, the most abundant and versatile immune cells in the blood. Neutrophils can interact with CTCs through various mechanisms, such as cell-cell adhesion, cytokine secretion, protease release, and neutrophil extracellular traps (NETs) formation.

  • Liquid crystal monomers (LCMs) are identified as new organic pollutants due to their ability to persist, accumulate, and be toxic in the environment, particularly in the Pearl River Estuary (PRE).
  • A study analyzed 19 different LCMs in various organisms, revealing their concentrations ranged from 32.35 to 1367 ng/g lipid weight, with biphenyls being the most prevalent.
  • The research highlighted that the bioaccumulation and transfer of these pollutants across the food web are influenced by factors such as hydrophobicity and biological behavior, marking LCMs like BPCHB and EDPBB as priority contaminants for further monitoring.

Article Synopsis
  • The study investigates the link between oxidative stress and bone mineral density (BMD) in adults under 40, focusing on how an oxidative balance score (OBS) could affect the risk of osteopenia.
  • Using data from over 3,900 participants in the NHANES survey, researchers applied statistical analyses to evaluate the correlation between dietary/lifestyle factors and BMD.
  • The results indicate that higher OBS is associated with a significantly lower risk of osteopenia, suggesting that adopting an antioxidant-rich diet and lifestyle could help maintain bone health in young adults.

Inspired by natural wrinkled surfaces, artificial surfaces with biomimetic wrinkled structures have been widely used to improve optical properties, wettability, and antibacterial properties. However, the preparation of wrinkled structures has the disadvantages of long-time consumption and complex processes. Herein, we prepared a self-wrinkling polyurethane-acrylate (PUA) wood coating via biomimetic self-wrinkling patterns by using a light-emitting diode (LED)/excimer/mercury lamp curing system, which was capable of self-matting, anti-fingerprint and skin-tactile performance.
