E3 ubiquitin ligases have been linked to developmental diseases including autism, Angelman syndrome (UBE3A), and Johanson-Blizzard syndrome (JBS) (UBR1). Here, we report variants in the E3 ligase UBR5 in 29 individuals presenting with a neurodevelopmental syndrome that includes developmental delay, autism, intellectual disability, epilepsy, movement disorders, and/or genital anomalies. Their phenotype is distinct from JBS due to the absence of exocrine pancreatic insufficiency and the presence of autism, epilepsy, and, in some probands, a movement disorder.

A total of 75 bacterial isolates were obtained from nodules of beans cultivated across 10 sites in six agro-ecological zones in Uganda. Using recA gene sequence analysis, 66 isolates were identified as members of the genus Rhizobium, while 9 were related to Agrobacterium species. In the recA gene tree, most Rhizobium strains were classified into five recognized species.

Infants born to mothers with phenylketonuria (PKU) may develop congenital abnormalities because of elevated phenylalanine (Phe) levels in the mother during pregnancy. Maintenance of blood Phe levels between 120 and 360 μmol/L reduces risks of birth defects. In species with alternative reproductive tactics, there is much empirical support that parasitically spawning males have larger testes and greater sperm numbers as an evolved response to a higher degree of sperm competition, but support for higher sperm performance (motility, longevity and speed) by such males is inconsistent. We used the sand goby () to test whether sperm performance differed between breeding-coloured males (small testes, large mucus-filled sperm-duct glands; build nests lined with sperm-containing mucus, provide care) and parasitic sneaker-morph males (no breeding colouration, large testes, rudimentary sperm-duct glands; no nest, no care). We compared motility (per cent motile sperm), velocity, longevity of sperm, gene expression of testes and sperm morphometrics between the two morphs.

This review summarizes research that investigated nudging interventions to promote healthful food purchase choices among adults.

Method: A comprehensive systematized search strategy identified research published since 2009 that investigated the role of nudges and choice architecture interventions on adult food purchasing decisions with behavioral outcomes.

Unlabelled: Gyrate atrophy of the choroid and retina (GACR) secondary to deficiency of ornithine aminotransferase (OAT) is a rare autosomal recessive metabolic disorder usually diagnosed in childhood when patients develop myopia and a characteristic retinal degeneration accompanied by hyperornithinemia. Plasma ammonia is normal or sub-normal after the neonatal period. A few GACR patients present in early infancy with hyperammonemia, encephalopathy and a biochemical profile of low plasma ornithine, citrulline and arginine, with increased urinary excretion of homocitrulline and orotic acid, resembling a primary urea cycle disorder.

A total of 102 bacterial strains isolated from nodules of three Bambara groundnut and one soybean cultivars grown in nineteen soil samples collected from northern Ghana were characterized using multilocus gene sequence analysis. Based on a concatenated sequence analysis (glnII-rpoB-recA-gyrB-atpD-dnaK), 54 representative strains were distributed in 12 distinct lineages, many of which were placed mainly in the Bradyrhizobium japonicum and Bradyrhizobium elkanii supergroups. Twenty-four of the 54 representative strains belonged to seven putative novel species, while 30 were conspecific with four recognized Bradyrhizobium species.

Osteocraniostenosis (OCS, OMIM #602361) is a severe, usually lethal condition characterized by gracile bones with thin diaphyses, a cloverleaf-shaped skull and splenic hypo/aplasia. The condition is caused by heterozygous mutations in the gene and is allelic to the non-lethal, dominant disorder Kenny-Caffey syndrome (KCS, OMIM #127000). Here we report two new cases of OCS, including one with a detailed pathological examination.

Fenbendazole is a broad-spectrum benzimidazole commonly used in laboratory animal medicine as an anthelmintic for elimination of pinworms. This drug is generally regarded as safe, with minimal side effects. Some data in rodent species indicate multiple physiologic effects of fenbendazole, including changes in immune parameters and behavior, but no studies to date have evaluated possible effects on reproduction in mice.
