Background: Delay from surgery to adjuvant chemotherapy causes impaired survival among patients undergoing radical resection for stage III colon cancer, and the underlying mechanism for this is incompletely clarified. It is established that prolonged postoperative hospital length of stay (LOS) is associated with delayed initiation of the adjuvant treatment driving the assumption that prolonged LOS is prognostically unfavorable due to this fact and case mix factors. We hypothesize that prolonged LOS after surgery is a valuable marker for susceptibility to relapse that is not detected in established prognostic factors and, alone, associated with a shorter disease-free survival (DFS).

In the current study, we examined the association of SNPs in the genes XRCC1-rs25487, ERCC1-rs11615, ERCC2-rs238406, and ERCC2-rs13181 with colorectal cancer (CRC) risk, relapse-free survival (RFS), overall survival (OS), and toxicity during chemotherapy.

Mucosal-associated invariant T (MAIT) cells all express a semi-invariable T cell receptor recognizing microbial metabolites presented on the MHC class I-like molecule MR1. Increasing knowledge of the function and regulation of tumor-infiltrating lymphocytes has led to new insights in cancer immunotherapy. Regulatory T cells (Treg) accumulate in colon tumors, and we recently showed that CD39 Treg from cancer patients inhibit transendothelial migration of conventional T cells. CD39 mediates the hydrolysis of ATP to immunosuppressive adenosine and adds to the immunosuppressive effects of Treg.

Background: Vascular complications occurring before the diagnosis of myeloproliferative neoplasms (MPN) in 612 patients from four centers in Sweden, Denmark and France were retrospectively studied.

Results: Vascular complications were observed in 151 (25%) of the 612 patients. Of these, 66% occurred during the two years preceding diagnosis.

High cell density perfusion process of antibody producing CHO cells was developed in disposable WAVE Bioreactor™ using external hollow fiber filter as cell separation device. Both "classical" tangential flow filtration (TFF) and alternating tangential flow system (ATF) equipment were used and compared. Consistency of both TFF- and ATF-based cultures was shown at 20-35 × 10(6) cells/mL density stabilized by cell bleeds.

Gelatin zymography revealed the presence of proteolytic activity in conditioned medium (CM) from a serum-free, non-infected Spodoptera frugiperda, Sf9 insect cell culture. Two peptidase bands at about 49 and 39 kDa were detected and found to be proform and active form of the same enzyme. The 49-kDa form was visible on zymogram gels in samples of CM taken on days 4 and 5 of an Sf9 culture, while the 39-kDa form was seen on days 6 and 7.

Background: Pain after coronary artery bypass surgery persists for several days. A continuous intravenous infusion of an opioid adequately accomplishes good pain control in the intensive care unit, but it is often not suitable on the ordinary ward. Patient-controlled analgesia (PCA) with intermittent injections delivered by one of the new devices now available could be an alternative to conventional nurse-controlled analgesia (NCA) based on intermittent injections.
